I read the bible in highschool about 10 years ago in a public school. We studied the structure/psalms/etc from a writing perspective, that's it. At no point was anything promoted. It was treated like any other book and wasn't "preached" as it is in a church.

I've met maybe one atheist in my life who actually studied religion, knew the bible better than most christians and was cool and non-judgemental to religious folks. One atheist I genuinely respected.
