Synopsis for the upcoming episode 18 according to the official ConRevo-website (some typos):
Seitaka Awadachi Plant
Screenplay: Sho Aikawa - Storyboard: Tomoyuki Kurokawa - Director: Kazuo Miyake - Animation Director: Inadome Kazumi and Eiko Saito - Mechanical Animation Director: Yokoya Kenta
Isamu Wakamura is a typical office worker. He is living with his young daughter Yuko as his wife as passed away. One morning, the bus the two are riding on is attacked by superhuman Jack Flash, who had escaped from a police van. Isamu suffers critical injuries, but his entire body starts to inflate. He becomes superhuman Human-man and puts an end to the crisis. Isamu is perplexed by the change in his body, but after seeing Yuko's excitement about seeing a superhuman of justice, he decides to continue as a superhuman. However, the appearance of his powers was closely related to the massive outbreak of the non-native species Seitaka Awadachi Plant.
The preview pictures of episode 18 look interesting. We'll see Earth-chan again, and Judas, and some huge hulk.

October in Shinka 47 (approximately 1972), Fuchu City
While a sarariman lives alone with this daughter, Shiba Raito frees a bunch of superhuman criminals from custody. One of them, a mutant hybrid from the Devila-tribe hijacks the bus that the sarariman and his daughter are using to escape. The sarariman tries to rescue his daughter, but is then pushed outside, where he miraculously manages to grab a hold on the bus. He quickly realizes that he became the fucking Hulk, and quickly disguises his face with a broken street light, quickly defeating the mutant. His daughter, not recognizing him, names him Human-man.
Meanwhile, Jirou and Earth-chan are fighting Daitetsu and his metal Godzilla, REX-FE, as seen in episode 8. They manage to escape.
Jirou then later tracks down two of his old superhuman buddies who now turned to crime to survive, and who are trying to get Human-man to join their cause. He refuses, and they flee.
Jirou and Human-man have a talk about how important it is to make the young generation still adore righteous superhuman, and then each go their separate way.
Later, Human-man finds out that his superpower comes from the pollen of a foreign mutated plant, which the government is planning to burn away. Human-man doesn't want that to happen, since he's now happy with his superpowers, despite the plants causing a disease that makes many people randomly spout superpowers they simply cannot control.
So he starts hindering the government forces from destroying the plants, and starts a fight with them. Jirou tries to reason with him, but even Earth-chan arrives and tells him that Human-man isn't doing it for a good cause, but simply for selfish reason, so that he won't become a weak pathetic crying sarariman again.

David Moore
David Moore

His daughter cries out for her mom to come save Human-man, and runs towards the face planted in the field, which turns out to be the puppa form of the Tartaros Bugman Queen.
She takes the pollen with her, spreading it everywhere in the land. Because after all, she's a bug, and bugs are necessary for most pollen to spread.
And thus, in the year Shinka 48, more superhumans appeared en masse.

I'm digging the scene where earth chan doing her justice but man, I dont know whether I want to agree with her, until a crime is committed, a superhuman is just another guy to me.She needs to do a better raito upgrade with her justice or maybe just leave it alone for more scene like this.

Dylan Watson
Dylan Watson

The terrifying thing is, Human-man is practically made of memes.
nobody cared who he was until he put on the mask
when his mask is removed, it would be painful
he's a big guy for you
HuMeme-man.

Anyway, the symbolism of this week's episode is definitely masks, and how we hide behind them.
From superhuman criminals, who are forced to wear a mask, ex-superhumans turned robbers disguising themselves as policeman, Daitetsu wearing a superenhancement mask, Wakamura wearing a mask so that he can face his own daughter, Kikko's fake nice-witch personality cracking and Campe emerging from a large face to reveal her now adult form.

The Jirou league is kinda dysfunctional for now, and not really unified in its goal. The only guy who's probably 100% behind anything Jirou does is Akira Shirota, aka the Shirota-Planetarian. And even that guy's more of another superdo-gooder who's more interested in fighting giant monsters than really opposing the bureau.

So far, we have:
Jirou
idealistic dreamer who tries to solve everything with talking first
Raito
hardliner who thinks bombing the government is a good idea
Shirota
too busy fighting kaijuus
Judas
has plans with Jirou's blood
Earth-chan

Can't be helped. Judas' must have a "heavy" fetish.

Chase Cooper
Chase Cooper

But Daitetsu never really looked up to Jirou, or see him as a symbol of justice. Remember they didn't really know each other for very long, and there's only really one character that the story has pointed out that has expectations of him in that area.

Noah Sanders

It makes sense that episodes written by Aikawa himself would deal with the show's overall theme and plot, whereas the guest episodes are a little bit different.

Michael Gomez
Michael Gomez

Damn, this was a really good episode. Honestly, it's competing with 7 as my favorite of the entire show so far. It was great to see best girl Earth-chan and Campe again, and I loved how much it tied into the overall plot, but even more than anything, I found Human-man's desire to look good in his daughter's eyes and protect her smile no matter the cost to be really endearing.

JIRO IS A HERO OF JUSTICE

Wyatt Williams
Wyatt Williams

He's just a dude with a normal job who lost his wife and thought her child hated him. He's got no time to think in such petty things as "ideals of justice"

Levi Kelly
Levi Kelly

And that was what was so great about him, he was just abiding by his own justice, which was to gain the respect of his child and keep her happy. He didn't care about what happened to other people, he just wanted her to keep on smiling.

Daniel Harris
Daniel Harris

Indeed, that makes him cool though, just caring about his daughter and nothing else, sasuga adults.

Nathan Sanders
Nathan Sanders

It was good though that he didn't use his newfound superpowers to rob money from banks or steal 40 cakes to make his daughter like him, the normal human dude, more than the giant hulkster persona he built for her happiness.

I'm still surprised it wasn't censored by funi, especially considering it apparently was on TV. Even if most of the time it was for fanservice unlike this, there's been many times that they've censored stuff significantly more than the TV airing.

Raito doing something that's right and fucked up at the same time
Judas conflicting with Jirou's justice
Daitetsu being shown to have reasonable motives for being against Jirou
Kikko and Emi getting more interesting characterization
Government doing sketchy but justifiable things in the name of public safety
They introduce a superhuman who seems like a good guy
Turns out he doesn't give a shit about justice, just wants to make his daughter happy and is willing to go against justice to do so
See different ways superhumans have reacted to events
Jirou doubts, then develops his sense of justice more
Earth-chan

It was pretty great. Makes the last two episodes more disappointing by comparison, though.

Logan Baker
Logan Baker

They've had less censorship than AT-X for Netoge.

Logan Robinson
Logan Robinson

I think what Raito did was meant to be gray. Sure, one of the criminals went and jacked a bus, but at least a few of the others were probably wrongfully imprisoned just due to being superhumans. But Raito only cares about freeing the innocent, he doesn't give a shit about collateral damage because he's an extremist.

Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones

Maybe their disappearance is supposed to be symbolic of Daitetsu's change in attitude and worldview. Him running around as a crime fighter with four or so other goofy kid companions that can help him manifest a colorful toy-like mecha is pretty childish. Him by himself in a military uniform, taking part in sketchy government activities while astride a giant, fire-breathing grey mecha-godzilla is supposed to be him "grown up".

Adam Edwards
Adam Edwards

Yeah but everyone else shouldn't be crazy. I know that Jirou protects superhumans but he shouldn't have let this slide just because they were superhumans.

That's supposed to be a theme this season. Jirou has decided that superhumans are justice and that he must protect anyone he considers superhuman from the bureau at any cost. Remember him defending the yuri idol girl, even though she was a straight up murderer? Jirou is supposed to be overly idealistic and at least a little wrong in his actions. It seems like a lot of this season is going to be spent with Jirou developing his sense of justice until it's more compatible with the real world.

I still enjoyed the last two, but this was the best episode of 2016 so far, so they can't even compare.

Jaxson Brown
Jaxson Brown

Honestly some episodes are just plain weak because they set up themes for other episodes, like the episode with human skii-jumper setting up a theme where human/superhuman line gets blurred. Usually the episode that was set up ends up 10/10.

Angel James
Angel James

It happens now even, not really surprising.

Isn't this a show you should only get in 1080? Wasn't it made in higher quality that 720?

Jackson Richardson
Jackson Richardson

Fair point with guest episodes setting up themes. But it still seems a little weird to me to have isolated, one-off episodes that don't develop the plot or characters meaningfully in a show that's so active in terms of developments. Especially in a second season that feels like it should be much less episodic than the first season.

Well, the second season has so far aired five episodes, and two of them were by guestwriters (the last one having done episode 8 with the Immortal Family). The next one will be by Aikawa again, and then we'll get whatever episode Urobuchi wrote.

Caleb Ross

whatever episode Urobuchi wrote.
Probably a Judas one.

Gavin Ward

Am I the only one who was bothered by this scene, where the adorable loli was appreciating Hulk in amazement seconds after her father fell into his possible death?

The episode was great in general, but sometimes the writers of this show depict human interaction in a really retarded way. This wasn't as offensively bad as that one scene in the comedy band episode in S1, but it still definitely rubbed me the wrong way.

Ian Russell
Ian Russell

I always took the guest episodes as world building anyway, i. e. super humans are able to participate in sports, but I certainly enjoy the ones that advance the plot a lot more.

I don't think she really understood or believed that her father fell to his possible death yet. Kids focus on the now, after all. If she had then seen the battered bruised body of her father, that might have been traumatic. But as long as she doesn't see a corpse or a heavily wounded body, she most likely won't think about it yet, except about that bad mutant dude being mean to her and everyone else.
Until the Incredible Hulk-man then arrives and totally awesomely trashes that bad guy away and saves everyone.

And hey, then her daddy appeared, and everything is fine.

What an awesome day.

Jaxson Perry

It probably is, but I haven't found where the insert song "The Bee of Mushasi died" has been listed in the credits section. If you find it there, and see those kanji 水樹奈々 past the character cast list (where she's listed as Campe, the bug queen), you'll have definite confirmation.

I found the band episode to be fine, and the only part that wasn't really handled that well to be Dee's death. If there's blame to put on, I would put it rather on Toru Yoshida, who was responsible for the storyboard and the directing.

I thought the speaker in OP1 was Kikko? I took that line to be in reference to the fact that she couldn't be an ally of justice because she's a Magical Girl, and ergo a warrior of love rather than justice.

He tossed away what was holding him back.
He's happy now knowing that he's justice.

Adrian Long
Adrian Long

I'm not really seeing this as Kikko becoming mentally unstable or anything. I think it's just building up to a point where she'll finally break from the Bureau and join up with Jiro's team. That'll probably cause a chain-reaction, with Emi leaving because she can't risk Kikko hooking up with Jiro, Jaguar leaving because he hates his life and likes Emi, and Fuurouta also leaving somewhere in there.

Owen Price
Owen Price

It's actually very possible that the government fucked up with the attempted destruction of the Canada Goldenrod flowers in this episode.
According to wikipedia
It is found in a variety of habitats, although it is not shade tolerant. It typically is one of the first plants to colonize an area after disturbance (such as fire) and rarely persists once shrubs and trees become established. It is found neither in very dry locations nor in waterlogged ones.
Having a mechagodzilla spit fire on it will probably not really having gotten rid of it.

Jonathan Nguyen
Jonathan Nguyen

It is very hard to decide between Kikko and Emi. Kikko can become a magical girl witch and can become a demon lord queen. Emi can become anything I think.

Elijah Powell
Elijah Powell

This is a pure irony.

The government wanted to control and limit the number of superhumans.
They cut down the forest where the Tartaros Bugmen lived.
Now an invasive weed that causes people to develop superpowers spreads everywhere. Because there are no trees and shrubbery to stop the invasive mutant superweed, more superhumans are being born than can be stopped by using the nainorin suppression drug.

The government fucked up years ago.

Nolan Rogers
Nolan Rogers

Emi can steal the apperance of any photo, although we haven't seen her use that in a long time. The difference here, in my view, is that Kikko's different forms are all her own faces, whilst Emi's different forms are all other people faces, not her own.

Considering that the last slide of the ED is Jirou, Kikko, Emi, Jaguar, and Fuurouta, and considering how absolutely unstable and dangerous Jirou's team is, I wonder if that could lead to an ending wherein the old bureau members reconcile in the face of Jirou's team and the gubmint going crazy?

Dylan Martinez
Dylan Martinez

Earth-chan is the only answer.

Carter Cruz
Carter Cruz

They'll eventually run out of that drug or something.

I came here to post this.

Dylan Collins
Dylan Collins

No, as a kitsune, Emi's true form looks like this. She transformed into a black-haired lady to disguise herself during the Kaijuu boom episode, and she stole the appearance of a drawing that had fallen on the bridge during that night that Jiro escaped the lab and "godzilla" appeared.

Andrew Cook
Andrew Cook

It definitely seems like that's the direction it's going in, but it makes me a bit sad, as I'd prefer it if Jirou's team would just get their shit together and properly team up, I like them so much more than the Bureau members.

Owen Williams
Owen Williams

Judas will be Team Justice's Judas in exchange for a promise that Earth-chan will be left unharmed, and during the subsequent battle, Raito and possibly Psy-kid and Neo-Grosse Augen will die. Then the bureau members will defect and they'll form Team True Justice.

Next week, "Iron Mask Arrives".

What if all the manga and anime in the ConRevo-world are actually documentaries and biographies?

It's possible, but I'd say it's more likely to be a story of someone wanting to become a hero imitating their favorite manga.

I've noticed that every time a half-breed shows up they're always half-human. Jack Flash (half-human half-Devila), Master Ultima (half-human, half-Fumer). Are they buildings towards a theme where it doesn't matter whether you're superhuman or human we're all essentially the same, especially because of the interbreeding.

So this episode is when Tartaros bug-lady awakens and 8 months later she'll confront Furouta for killing her people. Wonder if she'll join the Jirou league.

Aaron Gonzalez

The number of half-breeds is rather low currently. But I'm sure that yes, there will be an episode that will focus on discrimination and fear upon those who are not "pure" of blood, like the inhuman Master Ultima.

Watching so much of this show without a break like that is kind of painful, there's only so much retard cops and you don't agree with me so you're EVIL someone can take at once. At least Earth-chan showed up again.
And damn it Sup Forums how can one man be so pure?

Jordan Edwards

Assuming this season is going to be 13 episodes like the last there are still 8 episodes left. It would be easy to give 3 episodes to the team, and another three for the finale. And you would still have another two episodes like this one for world building. Personally i'm hoping for at least one episode of harem antics
I doubt it, they are giong to have to show what happened before Judas went mad science and after Earth is revived. Judging from the pacing of the previous episodes they will probaly make it 2 episodes.

Look, you can see the exact moment her sanity starts to crack.

The worst part is, even when her character's gone to crap and she's become a useless, unimportant side character whose only purpose is spewing nonsense only attributable to a psychopath in love, she's still more likely to win the Jirobowl (if by the end of the series there's still a Jirobowl to win, because there have been less and less signs of Jiro and Emi still interested in keeping the love triangle going) than Emi.

Question from last episode. If Devila is the current queen of the devil real and Kikko is the future princess of the devil real, doesn't that mean they are related in some way.

Jaxson Williams

I feel that the show will give us a good Emi/Jiro ep to keep the love triangle going. Jiro's justice is being developed more and more as he is forced to confront the real world, and maybe that will allow him to find a meeting point with Emi again.

Cameron Evans
Cameron Evans

I kind of thought her sanity would be okay after that speech Jiro gave when protecting Human-man for "super humans protecting the smiles of children" though perhaps we need to see the next couple of episodes and see.

That's an interesting way to cope with her getting cucked every other episode.

Jonathan Johnson
Jonathan Johnson

I don't dislike any of them. They both have good points and flaws.

Emi behaves more prudently and mature and I feel her love towards Jiro (at least by the end of first season) was more serious than Kikko's, but on the downside she's treacherous and I hate how much she lied to Jiro when they were together.

Kikko's love towards Jiro feels more like teenager obsession to me and I find her character to be a bit impulsive and shallow, but I'm sure her love is intense and pure and she'd follow Jiro to the end of the worldl if he only explained why he left the bureau and asked her to go with him.

I don't blame you for forgetting since it was 7 months ago, and maybe it would come across as a half-assed deus ex on its own without context, but this episode connected with Episode 2 pretty well, the Tartaros Queen waking up should really be a moment where everything clicks instead of bothering you like that.

There is still no relation to episode 2 other than having same character. Why did bug queen take all the polen? Why did government let her? Why did government let the plant infestation spread? Etc..

Why did bug queen take all the polen?
The little girl who nurtured her growth was begging for help.

Why did government let her?
They were trying to get rid of it in the first place.

Why did government let the plant infestation spread?
Might be explored later or maybe the pest was just beyond their control. We see in this episode they schedule burnings of areas that are infested.

Then, an event critical in determining the popularity of Cup Noodles occurred. This was the widely televised Asama-Sanso incident in February 1972 in which a Japanese revolutionary armed group was surrounded in a mountain villa. The incident was broadcast live daily on television, and scenes of members of Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department riot squad eating Cup Noodles during the siege of the mountain lodge where the incident occurred were televised. This resulted in unexpected publicity to viewers nationwide, and Cup Noodles began to fly off the shelves.

If it's not already included, don't forget the show's most important historical reference.

Luke Thomas

Why did government let the plant infestation spread?
Might be explored later or maybe the pest was just beyond their control. We see in this episode they schedule burnings of areas that are infested.
Unless a later episode shows that the mutated canada goldenrods came from a secret lab to activate the superhuman gene, it most likely was simply coincidence that such a thing happened in the first place.
And by the time the government found out that the superhuman disease was caused by the pollen of special mutated canada goldenrods, it was already too late.

Personally, I think the superhuman-power granting canda goldenrods came to be because of the proximity to the bug queen Campe and her chrysalis. Then, the pollen simply spread around, and more and more parts of the Kanto region got "infested" by magical goldenrods.

Andrew Sanchez
Andrew Sanchez

It's still being worked on by some dude.
I sure wouldn't mind some Gigander-7, Arcus and now a REX-FE.
And we'll have an upgraded Equus with airplane-jetpack mode looking forward too.

There's a chance that the airplane that Hyouma and Raito are flying in the next week's preview might become that very airplane-jetpack for Jiro's Equus. After all, Hyouma built it for the little boy, and only he could make add-ons that work with it.

Kikko isn't yandere, she's was just taking that chance to subtly let Jirou know she's unwillingly doing all that shit because of him.

It's not like she's going to suddenly start killing puppies so she can see her senpai. If anything, it was a sign that sooner or later she's going to reach her limit, ditch the Bureau and join Jirou's team.

Speaking of that scene, did anyone rip Funi's subs? Daisuki's translation of that dialogue seemed off.

Joseph Sanchez
Joseph Sanchez

In the Daisuki-version.
Kikko:
Teito wants profitable superhumans, and Public Security wants prospective soldiers.
The Bureau is necessary to protect all other superhumans.
Or that's what Mr. Jaguar says.
Jiro:
Then...
Kikko:
If I stay in the Bureau, I get to see you.
Jiro:
But only as foes.
Kikko:
I don't care. It's the only way.
Jiro:
Kikko...

Funimation version.
Kikko:
Imperial Ads only want superhumans that make money.
The security forces only want soldiers.
In order to protect every other superhuman, we need the Superhuman Bureau.
End quote, from Mr. Jaguar.
Jiro:
Then why...
Kikko:
If I stay at the Bureau, I can see you.
Jiro:
As enemies!
Kikko:
That's good enough, it's all I have!
Jiro:
Kikko...

Yandere doesn't mean "Stalks around every corner while holding a knife and stabbing everyone that talks to the person she likes". I don't know why most people on Sup Forums don't understand that. She's very much going yandere.

Friendly reminder that the entire season so far has been hyping up Emi and subtly shitting on Kikko
Not at all. Kikko has a weird obsession with him and he has a weird Justice obsession with becoming the hero she saw him as (and as evidence by the Grosse Augen incident, actually is). Emi is manipulating him from the start, and stole his mother's face to make him feel comfortable around here. Don't know where all this "Emi is a good girl and should win the Jiro-bowl" crap is coming from.

Don't know where all this "Emi is a good girl and should win the Jiro-bowl" crap is coming from.
Nobody says that she's good. She's just much cooler.

Emi has cooler powers, a more interesting personality, motivation that transcends Jiro's dick and she smokes too.
Cooler.

The problem with Kikko is that once we got her backstory, she seized to be interesting or entertaining.
Just "NOTICE ME SEMPAI!" all day, every day.

Gabriel Powell
Gabriel Powell

It looked like some mother figure holding him in that childhood photo that fell during the monster attack.

Kikko keeps something from him, but doesn't manipulate him like Emi does.

She's just much cooler.
Oh, well that's just silly. Emi is interesting, but an adult mahou shoujo who is also a borderline Yandere demon queen who wants to marry the MC is a treat.
her backstory is done so she's boring
No, that just means we can see her enact her plan and get resolution as the demon queen.

Anthony Powell

It looked like some mother figure holding him in that childhood photo that fell during the monster attack.
It probably is a photo of a motherly figure indeed. Just not Jiro's, because he's a mysterious orphan.
It is however quite likely that Emi decided on a pure whim that she wants to look motherly and then took that form simply because she can. That is part of her nature.
Perhaps later, she'll decide to become a blonde, or a rainbow-haired harridan.
A woman with unfathomable moods who is a core member of the Superhuman Bureau. She is highly skilled in tracking the enemy, possesses uncanny knowledge and strange skills. Having lived with Jiro from the time he was in grade school, they are childhood friends whose fates are closely linked. She was born from a union between a human and a different species which has been known since ancient times as “yokai” or goblins. Behind her somber expression is a woman who dreams of a world where her species and man can live in harmony.

Joshua Jackson
Joshua Jackson

her demon queen side lasted like 2 episodes and everyone conveniently forgot about it. all she's done since the start is lust after jiro and while idealistic crushes are cute they get boring after a while. it's better when the girl has an actual personality/life/friends outside of being the romantic interest.

She's currently under control, her magical powers are a great asset, and she's loyal to the Bureau, even if it's only because she's a lovestruck little witch devil who keeps working with the Bureau so that she can meet Jiro-sempai from time to time.
Of course, there is a possibility that this will not keep working for much longer.
