Calling Texhnolyze an "ABe work" is a bit of a stretch.

Ah right, that was Chiaki Konoka that wrote it. ABe just did the designs.

I just mean they're the type of things people associate with to look artsy or whatever. You know what I mean, don't think much of it. I'm sure they're fine.

Juan Fisher
Juan Fisher

That's probably fair to say of some Lain watchers and even Texhnolyze might be able to be called a bit pretentious in the way that it's presented but as I said, he didn't write either of those. ABe seems to like writing fairly simple works, just look at Ryuushika.

Ryder Peterson
Ryder Peterson

Oh I had thought he wrote Lain. Either way he's the unlucky bastard I associate with them since his style is so distinct.

Joseph Turner

That's it for now. I might post some more if the thread is still up in an hour or so.

It's an easy mistake to make. I think most people associate ABe with Lain more than any of the other people involved because his art is so well known.

Haibane is his only good work.
And even that is plagiarized.
So he's pretty much a hack and can't write for shit.

He draws cute despera girls though so he's an okay artist.

Should have never picked up anything else.

Hudson Miller

And even that is plagiarized.
What now?

Christian Cruz

He said it himself that he basically took the plot from Murakami's "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" 1 to 1 and just added cute girls into mix, so it's barely even writing.
Doesn't even hide it.

stay with LOTGH, its one of those shows that you need to experience by watching non stop (around ep 100 you will feel the urge to stop for a break so due that then) once you put it down its hard to pick it back up. they are all cute, Kuu is not very good looking but her personality definitely makes her cute.

Jaxson Price

It has drama and a vague plot about Rakka fitting in a weird place without knowing where she's from, but half of the show is a somewhat special SoL.

He discussed some similar themes between the settings but never said that, quote, "he basically took the plot from Murakami's 'Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' 1 to 1 and just added cute girls into mix", unquote. In fact, if you'd read the book in question you'd realize the claim that the plot's the same is absurd. Sounds like you're mostly parroting comments you've read on Sup Forums. Don't worry, you wouldn't be the first to do that.

Zachary Nelson

Also he made cute manga.

Liam Hall

I don't understand, even if you don't like drama in general I think that Haibane Renmei did it good, it didn't drag for much long and in the end it was resolved.
To this day I still remember the scene with the train in the room painted black, and to me HR is a 7/10 at most.

Jack Wright
Jack Wright

The plot is actually far more similar to Wedekind's "Mine-Haha oder Über die körperliche Erziehung der jungen Mädchen".

David Carter
David Carter

The SoL stories were ok, but it would've been better to explore the other haibane or just tell the story of Rakka and Reki and leave them out imho.
I'll do that. It's such a long show and only just started the first episode last night. All the character names are too much to remember.

Again, he claimed in Anime Expo (2003 if I remember correctly) that the book's themes influenced HR, not that he borrowed or copied the plot from it. Since the plot's different but the setting similar, that's hardly a surprise.

You have very clearly not read HBWatEotW. I've seen you in other ABe threads saying the same thing and every time I point out that while the setting of Haibane Renmei is similar to one of the settings in the book (and ABe has made no attempt to hide the fact that the book was his inspiration), the story is completely and utterly different.

It's a good book by the way, actually read it before posting about it.

The point of the show isn't cute angel girls doing cute things, but cute angel girls living in a purgatory because they have unresolved issues before they can ascend to Heaven (or become a bird, whatever), so you can't say that Reki resolving her own issues is pointless because that's literally the only plot the show has.

Thinking that Haibane Renmei is a dumb SoL about cute girls doing cute things with nothing else going on is literally missing the point.

Jose Young

character development is now plot
Are you even serious.
The plot was the mystery where you're supposed to figure out that they're all dead or some shit.

And it's not engaging or gripping, and the character development for Kuu's issues and Reki/Rakka etc. are completely wasted.

Well they got resolved and then nothing.
It ended.
End of the line.
If you liked that for some reason then whatever.

The part where they were cute and enjoying things was way more enjoyable for me.

Wyatt Gutierrez
Wyatt Gutierrez

There was drama throughout user. The show is about a girl taken from her previous life and thrown into a strange town filled with strange people who have strange customs and she doesn't handle it well from the very start. Look at Reki whose motherly, almost overbearing treatment of Rakka from episode 1 is explained by the drama that you have such disdain for. Even if you completely miss all the foreshadowing as you clearly have done, the SoL aspects end after episode 5.

The show is a mystery/drama one with the early episodes setting everything up.

character development is now plot

No user, just no. The whole "they're all dead or some shit" isn't even important to the actual plot which is being able to move on and how Reki and Rakka resolve being initially unable to do so. We never know for sure if they're actually dead and it really doesn't matter.

They get resolved and then they at last get eternal peace.
yes, that's the conclusion
now what is good or interesting about it?
Nothing, they resolved their problems and passed on
the end

The show tells you how they can't stay in the city forever, if they stay for too long they'll be trapped forever, and Reki was on the verge of that
That's straight up TOLD to you when we learn about the black wings
it's literally nothing
just an aspect and a fact of the universe

They didn't do anything with it in the end, as Rakka just accepted it in the end and we never learn what actually happened before the last scene of the new generation

As I already said, the sol moments were just way better because they're actually enjoyable.

And the whole 12 episodes until the last one are SoL.
SoL with drama sure, but it's still a slice of life.

I don't know if you just don't understand what that means or something but you seem to have the idea that
sol=comedy/happiness
Well I can't help you with that comprehension

The cute is just presented as way more valuable than the sad, they even try to avert it by resolving every conflict
which isn't even a conflict at all

Like with Kuu
The whole part was retarded, Rakka just got upset over it like some dumb cunt
There was literally no point in boasting drama over that
muh nakama left me
they're in the better place but i'll cry like an asshole and show that to everyone

That's just a convenient plot device to push her character from a cute girl into forced drama when that wasn't developed from the beginning, and then suddenly BOOM she's a sinner and the whole show slowly starts to sink down the drain

now what is good or interesting about it?
Are for fucking real?
So you think every single conflict is pointless because after it gets to the conclusion it ends?
Do you even understand the point of storytelling?

And HR isn't a SoL, it has SoL elements but from the first moment you have a mystery going on and an overarching plot of finding out why Rakka is there.

They didn't do anything with it in the end, as Rakka just accepted it in the end and we never learn what actually happened before the last scene of the new generation
Are you for fucking real? That's the reason why Rakka tries desperately to help Reki in the end, because she knows that she'll condemn her to a life of regret and sadness if she just leaves her here.
It's the reason why they must work towards helping thieir problems instead of living a carefree life forever, it's the reason why they all disappear and move on eventually, consequentually, it's the reason why every single bit of drama happens.

The whole part was retarded, Rakka just got upset over it like some dumb cunt
There was literally no point in boasting drama over that
my friend left me forever for a reason I don't understand since I'm new to the place

be a kid
your grandad dies
learn that you will die too
have a ptsd hic over it like a retard
Sure makes sense!
It's a dumb cop out, she obviously has a grasp of death and learning that something similar to it will happen doesn't change anything.

She just SUDDENLY decides to get worried about.
None of her actions make sense.

If we look at it from the perspective of her having severe anxiety and mental damage then sure she acted believably.

But there was no foreshadowing to it.
She was shown to act a little timidly and get through pain like nothing.

You're really the one who is autistic here if you think this is some grade A writing.
Pretty sure that's abe's first time trying to write something like that, he's a complete rookie with no grasp of what he's doing.

I will never understand the special defence squad of the plot of this show.

You can praise the visual direction and so much more, but you decide to stick up for something actually bad about the show

because of course it's perfect and h-how dare you be critical about it, even if your evaluation is right!

As I said already take your head out of your ass and look at your post.

Let me paraphrase, your answer is literally
She's been thrown into a world she doesn't understand and can't remember the life that she knew she used to live
explanation of obvious
Then, a good friend of hers disappears off the face of the earth and she doesn't understand why but learns that it'll happen to her as well one day because she is a Haibane
more stating of facts
How is it difficult for you to understand how that would be upsetting?

Rakka is understandably scared and confused throughout the entire show and breaks down multiple times as a result
A meaningless opinion with no explanation

This is either bait or you're literally retarded. Also Rakka and the audience have no idea what happens to Kuu and the fact that no one is willing to speak about it only makes her more confused and scared. Death is one thing but she has literally no idea who she is, where she is, what happens to the Haibane or why she left her previous life to come there.

As the other user said, your post doesn't need to take up my whole screen.

Colton Green
Colton Green

So you think every single conflict is pointless because after it gets to the conclusion it ends?
Do you have problems reading?
I asked what was interesting about the entire ordeal.
It's simple.
A girl is troubled with something, it's explained to her and she's satisfied with it.
There's nothing more to it, it's plain and boring.

Do you scream out in excitement on episode 732 of sherlock holmes when he finds out the killer and scream "BRILLIANT! HOW GRIPPING AND NEW!"?

Haibane is a SoL, that's the official genre of the show.
It means it shows moments of life of some characters.
They do things.
I don't know what you're not getting and why you're so insistent it's not what it is.

my friend left me forever for a reason I don't understand since I'm new to the place
but I can't get upset over it because user thinks that's forced drama
That is literally the definition of forced drama
what's so hard to get?

because she knows that she'll condemn her to a life of regret and sadness if she just leaves her here
She was scare to leave her alone to begin with, the point was that she resolved to helping her instead of giving up.
She accepted that she will be gone no matter what so she will try to make the best of it and not let down Reki and help her

There's nothing great about this resolution.
it's plain, bland and predictable

Why do you try to defend this so much?
Do you really think it's a masterpiece of drama that world never seen before?
I don't get you.

Try reading more books or something?

Mason Jenkins

Whether I think it was good, boring or plain doesn't matter (I think it was good, however.).
You said that the drama is irrelevant to the show and that's fucking moronic, since the drama is the point of the show, the SoL parts are just there to show us the world and its society, because they're deeply related to the drama.

That is literally the definition of forced drama
Oh fuck off.

Samuel Martin
Samuel Martin

As the other user said, your post doesn't need to take up my whole screen
Deal with it, it's your problem not mine.
If it tickles your mental problems I can't help but advise you the obvious.

Also Rakka and the audience have no idea what happens to Kuu
It's literally explained to her in the show

Death is one thing but she has literally no idea who she is
Talking out of your ass
where she is
still going
what happens to the Haibane
still going
why she left her previous life to come there
The fact that you think she ever concerned herself with that is simple fallacy with no way to actually prove it.
Her character development is to throw her a macguffin, suddenly turn 180 and make her magically change attitude again after "finding herself"
it's the laziest plot convenience, never explained, and makes no sense

Kayden Myers
Kayden Myers

something happens for a reason I don't understand just so I can get upset
not convenient
not literally forced
You guys are great, I love this board.

Angel Stewart
Angel Stewart

The serious drama starts at episode 6 (with many aspects of it like Reki's treatment of Rakka being foreshadowing) and continues for the rest of the show. That gives 5 episodes of learning about the characters and worldbuilding. This really isn't unusual for any drama show. Rakka's drama then leads into Reki's that had been foreshadowed since episode 1 and strongly since episode 4.

It's literally explained to her in the show
Saying "it's her day of flight" but not elaborating is not explaining it and Rakka's confusion as a result is clear.

Talking out of your ass
Saying that doesn't make it any less true. She is literally thrown into a completely unknown town with weird as fuck customs and can't remember who she was.

Evan Brooks
Evan Brooks

It's not forced if it's a fact of the world that Haibane have their day of flight. The drama comes from no one wanting to explain the situation to Rakka and her fear and confusion as a result.

Nolan Cruz

something happens

I suppose you could see it as the show trying to give character development to the cast and Ichise.

The pacing of the show perhaps is a bit slow, but I don't think the beginning is slower, it seems so because you don't know what's going on since there's no exposition.

I'm ashamed to say Lain was 2deep4me. Loved Haibane though.

Guy has a flat-out mastery of huggable character designs.

I did not know all you need is kill got an apparently decent film adaptation (ABe did the illustrations for the manga).

Wow.

It's sad that everyone knows ABe but no one recognizes this guy despite him having much more creative influence on Lain and Texhnolyze.

Frankly, I assume Konaka had the most influence on the content, since he's the writer and all. Or is there some interview where they credit Ueda with the ideas or something like that?

Not that user, but it seems Ueda was one of those (nowadays increasingly rare) producers who exerted a lot of creative control over their projects. If you watch the interview for Texhnolyze with him and ABe you very clearly get the sense that just like with lain, the original concept was intimately connected to Ueda. Obviously Konaka's scripts can't be discounted, and his trademark flourishes are all over lain and Texh but Ueda is probably at the heart of both of those works.

It's kinda sad that we probably won't see anything cool from him if Despera doesn't happen. It seems like the last cool thing he worked on was Shigurui with Hamasaki again.

Sora no Woto is Haibane Renmei done unpretentiously.

I watched some of it, and I didn't get the sense of friendship that I got from Haibane.
