Oh please, you and I both know that when she hit that "low point" in the series it was hilarious. She completely turned against everyone and was like "THIS IS WHO I AM, I'M A MONSTER AND DON'T NEED FRIENDS BLAH BLAH BLAH GONNA GO MY OWN WAY." It made me cringe, I'm not trying to step on toes by throwing the word "edgy" around but what the fuck else should I use to describe it when "edgy" is the best way to describe how Ryuko was acting at that point in the series?

It had great potential but squandered all the build up in the second half.
The mystery of nudist beach was gone.
The suspense was gone due to constant life fiber ass pulls.

Yeah, the second half, or the last third was where I got really burned out

I could not finish watching it while it was airing in Japan. I tried again when it was announced that it would be on Toonami, and finished it.

It should be noted that the dub was just plain awful. Felt like they heard Ryuko was a tomboy and the director said "say no more, we got this" only to fuck up the protagonist's voice, a big deal, if you ask me. After the first episode, I immediately went back to subs and just watched it at my own pace.

Jordan Anderson
Jordan Anderson

It's a good show with good themes that lost its focus by becoming bigger in a world we knew nothing about. When there's an alien invasion in a world that feels completely different from our own and doesn't resemble it, how is the audience suppose to care?

I feel likes it's the direct opposite of TTGL in many ways.

Men are boring but aim high, for the heavens. This is how they are defined, but must also accept those around them for moral support.
Women are interesting but are kept down by the social structures and must learn to over come it and embrace them.

I don't find either show shallow, overall I just find the contrast of the two sexes interesting. TTGL has an interesting universe and plot but shallow characters. KlK has a shallow universe (we know literally nothing about the world and the bit we know from the school invasion tells us nothing) but has interesting characters, or at least much more interesting than the ones in KlK.

So, a spiral, a duality. Two sides. Two sexes. Both shallow but not. KlK is simply the TTGL for girls by being the opposite.

Hunter Phillips
Hunter Phillips

In tumblr's case, it's correct. Satsuki's entire point of not giving a shit about the male gaze is what makes her stronger.

Elijah Hall
Elijah Hall

Started off strong, but ended up just flopping around:

first few episodes set up the characters and the setting
get to first Elite fight versus monkey
ends up being pretty cool
other Elite fights become less cool due to ass-pulls like suddenly spawning spikes versus Gamagori or the soundwave shit versus Nonon
Nui appears
hype flies through the roof
berserk Ryuuko is fucking lame, doesn't deal much damage, and Satsuki can fight it instead of getting her ass pounded in
show goes completely downhill from here
no Senketsu v2, despite having all signs point towards it
fight the Elite Four AGAIN
worst plot twist ever: aliens
don't even do much with it, just use it as a cop-out to explain life fibers
final boss is lame as all fuck and can't even hold a candle to TTGL's ending
the life fiber bullet was never used or even mentioned

The show would have been immensely better if the final fight wasn't so goddamn awful. I expected something that would top TTGL's final fight.

I have no idea what was up with this show but it became one of the most entertaining Sup Forums fads. Shit about this show was being spewed left and right with multiple boards discussing it. The endless discussion and memes really made the show feel like a much bigger experience than it actually was. I still remember how /v/ and Sup Forums were probably the biggest boards to discuss it and everyone got butthurt whenever they thought a person from /v/ was discussing it on Sup Forums. Then, to top it all off the mods actually created a fucking 2000+ reply sticky on Sup Forums just for the final episode.
Those were truly magical times.

I feel Imashi is stronger suited to direct shows like Luluco. The short runtime means that each scene has to have impact and also an actual cohesive storyline so episodes can transfer from one to another without losing sight of the overarching plot. Kill la kill is a good example of the opposite where some episodes are stronger than others while the bad episodes are absolutely terrible mainly because they didn't stay on task or felt out of place. But we'll have to wait see, I thought Luluco was going to turn to shit but it is surprisingly fun

If you want to look for "messages" there are a lot of things that can be pulled from this show user.

Have a thick skin/ don't let every other asshole get into your head.
You can't move forward if you don't accept your reality.
When people genuinely care about you, let them into your life to help you.
Everyone can amount to greater things if given the chance, they are not locked into preset paths.
Even if you are given great power, know that you are not going to always be the most powerful so don't get full of yourself.
Your not always going to win. Take a loss as a humbling learning experience instead of fucking off to have a cry about it.
Strive to be better then you were yesterday.
Throwing blind force into a problem won't always solve it, in fact it can make it worse. Instead figure out how best to apply your energy to surmount the obstacle.
Don't lose yourself when faced with internal turmoil./ Don't give in to blind emotion.
etc.

You can boil TTGL down to "Mindless action mecha show"
You can boil KLK down to "Mindless action fanservice show"

However at the end of the day Nakashima wrote both scripts, Imaishi directed both productions, and they are both literally "boy/girl growing up in adverse circumstances."

If you want to believe the writing team would intentionally fill one with deeper meaning, then you generally have to accept that both were filled with deeper meanings because they were made by the same people, in the same way, with the same basic premise.

Jordan Russell

Charles Peterson
Charles Peterson

they are there but harder to find, or are just you looking to hard

Quite the opposite.

Satsuki screams at Ryuko to block out the masses and focus on her objective to stop being weak. Also finally accepts Senketsu's full help. Turns fight around immediately afterward while talking about it mid tornado-swing.

Senketsu tells Ryuko don't get cocky. She gets beaten by Tsumugu after claiming she was doing good enough. Extra Mako speech about taking care of your friends thrown in between.
Happens again with Uzu, beat him once let it get to her head. Got beat the second time, instead of crying about it and wishing for more power like ep 1 she takes a breather in a ditch and reaffirms with Senketsu she will train harder with him to get that power and stop being complacent.
Confirms she took this to heart by telling Mikisugi she won't underestimate the elite 4 during elections.

Gamagori tells Ryuko that blindly swinging at him will never work against his regalia that throws all damage back. Only wins after taking it into consideration and thinking things through with an actual strategy instead of rushing in headfirst again.

Yes there are some you can dig for, but the show does generally give the viewer the central points regularly like TTGL did with "believe in the me that believes in you, everyone has the power within them, etc". Of course the audience can take from that as they will in the end.

KLK is actually a pretty well developed commentary on feminism and the pressures that a young girl is put through as she grows up. The women in KLK gain power through their sexuality and showing off their bodies, with the overall message of telling girls to be responsible with the "power" they're given. Ragyo could be said to represent the fashion industry, encouraging young girls dress like sluts and use their sexuality in irresponsible and destructive ways. It's no coincidence that everyone on Ragyo's team masturbates, are constantly horny, and literally rape other women. The show acknowledges that indeed, women only gain their true power through sex, but they get the choice of how to use it. That's why both sides still use life fibers and clothing to win, but with different applications.

it's the kind of message that would make western feminists squirm, but it actually a pretty good one.

The show would have been immensely better if the final fight wasn't so goddamn awful.
That's one of the major problems. The finale was full of out-of-nowhere swerves that were used to completely neutralize other out-of-nowhere swerves which were themselves used to deal with other other out-of-nowhere swerves.

One of my personal least favorites, because it could have been actually good if it were just handled better, was when Senketsu could suddenly absorb life fibers and using that to undo the Ragyo's plan with her own unique powers. This could have been a clever and well-foreshadowed event... if it had happened ~after~ Ryuuko defeated the villain, instead of it being ~how~ she won a seemingly hopeless battle. It was already shown frequently that Senketsu could absorb other life fibers in several previous episodes.

The problem is, they completely changed how the ability worked. In every other case, a life fiber from a defeated enemy drifted into Senketsu, implicitly making it stronger; then suddenly it's able to absorb the strength and powers of other Life Fiber beings just by being in contact with them, which conveniently means that all of Ragyo's attacks were useless all along. It doesn't even matter that the Scissor Blade turns out to be useless and easily shattered for no clear reason, because Ryuuko and Senketsu's new ability was just what they needed to win with no real effort.

Ryder Campbell

Yes. I'm glad it never took itself seriously.

Dominic Ward

Most of Ryuuko's new powers made sense, being variants of Senketsu's ability to change his shape. It makes sense that he can suddenly create spiny buzzsaw blades, extend arm blades when they don't have a weapon, or even expand his shoulder jets into a full array of flight-capable rockets.

The life fiber absorption thing is something else entirely. That came pretty much out of nowhere to let them effortlessly overcome an implausibly unbeatable foe. Worse, it's only the last in a sequence of new powers and techniques (by heroes and villains alike) that have similarly little logic and even less impact.

Charles Torres
Charles Torres

Somewhat related, me and my friend were trying to think of villains from anime that had good themes after talking about blumenkranz, and after going through a bunch that didn't have a theme or a shit one, the only two we could find were team rocket's motto and pegasus' toon world theme.

There any others?

You missed the scene where everyone is ranked by the uniform? I don't agree with the guy you replied, though. They are basically metaphors for the reproduction of social structure. It's a school, after all. Rules and obscenity goes hand in hand, as every law generates its own exception.

It could have been good if Trigger didn't feel the need to pretend to be retarded with their animation.

For me yes!
Still this is only my personal opinion.
But the feeling it gave me, the anticipation even if I predicted basically everything, all of that was worth it.
I still like to rewatch it.
I crave this feeling it gave, only few anime gave me this.
And the way I felt for Ryukou was also really rare.
So for me it is a really great one.

I am still angry that one of the most recommended buyfag shops cancelled my preorder of three figures when the figures released, because they accepted too many preorders, without making sure that they get enough.
I basically preordered the moment it was possible, but they apologized and said they hope I can get it now elsewhere.
Sure fuckers that is going to work now after release.

By the way the only thing I disliked was Mako because she destroyed the tension too fucking often.
