How many anime production cels do you own
Post production cels
How many anime production cels do you own
Post production cels
how much did that run you?
it's not mine
Is Ebay and Y!JA the best place to find them?
the crisp and clear acrylic paint
pretty sure on ebay
but im not sure how much they go
Holy shit! JoJo still use cell animation or this is just a fake ?
the OVA did
Ah. You lucky faggot. That's a good one.
I own a fuckzillion other cels from the OVA.
Megazone 23 Part II
Armor Hunter Mellowlink
That's all of em'
Forgot image. Hurrr.
thank you for dumping
how much did they run you
Thank to Shirobako i know about cell animation and why anime color from 90s,80s feel really different.
This boy ain't me. Why you gonna act like me, bruh?
Not as much as you'd think. $500 at the MOST. And that's a generous overestimation.
The Ghibli ones are damned expensive.
New scanner, it keeps cropping tightly to the image, but they are full cels.
To be honest I've never considered owning one but I really want an Eva one now.
Doubt you'll find one easily. Bought my Asuka over 10 years ago.
Is my memory failing or Eva's cells out there are actually reproductions?
I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that the original one (surprisingly) heve never being sold, but then again it could be one of the countless Internet's unsourced facts about Eva.
There are lots of reproductions, "celuclub" or something like that, but they are the same few designs. Supposedly original cels were never sold, but there was quite a thriving market for them years ago on yahoo.jp. Of course if you found two the same that would be a dead giveaway.
Eva cels and the celluclub ones:
I'll be honest user, I'm fucking jealous.
I don't have cels but I pretty much owned this and Shirobako genga collection.
Holy shit, man.
How much did you spend? These seems to be original.
That's pretty cute.
I honestly can't remember, it was years ago.
That's the only Azumanga one I have. Tried to get cels but never saw any, had they gone to digital paint by then? Not really sure.
Besides a bunch of artbooks I own, I have a setting/reference book for Kill la Kill, Imaishi and Yoshinari drew on it. That's about it, if that even counts.
post it please?
Left page, L to R: Imaishi Hiroyuki with the Mako drawing, and Yoshinari Yo with Akko
Right page, clockwise from top left: Sushi, Aoi Eir, Kazuki Nakashima, Yosuke Toba
I also have one of huke's doujin artbooks. Met him and he signed the front cover
Imaishi pls lrn to draw
I need to get a bunch of these. My uncle has a shit ton of looney toons ones and they are fucking rare.
Imaishi > Yoshinari IMO
expect joke/shitposting thread
this thread should be archived
how much was that?
I'm mad jelly right now
I just find it odd that cels would be available to buy at all. How does it even happen?
Also archive just because you don't see a thread with cel scans everyday I guess?
All the good Sailor Moon cels on both ebay and yahoo auctions are insanely expensive.
Aren't all threads archived, then eventually deleted?
Holy fuck original pokemon cel is fucking expensive.
I have seen Yahoo auctions full of these, are they legit? I would be pretty bummed out paying $100 for something faked or mass produced.
Evangelion cels are around $400-$600.
Maybe this question is stupid but: cels are the frames used to make the anime aren't they? if so there must be a buttload for each show. if they run in the 100s each for a show like eva how much is the show worth with the cels alone?
post the huke one
Studios make it available for the public to buy. Studio gives cells to staff and they sell it.
If you are going to post on Sup Forums you should at least know how anime is made. And yes.
Shitposting is all fun and games until Sup Forums convinces me to spend $1800 on a fucking picture of the Major.
How can one bid on yahoo Japan auctions? Don't you need a Japanese address?
What's the best way to display cels? Frame them?
Every Yahoo Auctions seller is a shill-bidding faggot so don't expect to get a deal ever.
S-sorry I posted in the wrong thread. I have multiple tabs open.
no problem, still too orange though.
I have old war photos that I brought to hobby lobby and they frameed them and put them in a sealed glass container and the glass prevents sun damage and moisture and a bunch of other things.
You should add UV and IR filters for the Glass as they can damage the cell.
I bought my mom a cell of Storm from the old X-Men cartoon at a con once, but I didn't know anime did the same thing. Where do you guys get them? Do all shows do it or is it just luck of the draw on whether a show you like sells cells?
It's how they used to animate cartoons
Funny as to how (ed, edd & eddy) was the last CN show to use cells.
It's called cel not cell.
I miss when individual threads were archived.
kill yourself retard
Cel, Lesson learned.
Yes nigger, we all know how that shit works, stop posting like you are trying to teach something.
Are you a time traveler or something?
I know that's how they used to animate, I meant do all shows that use them sell them or what?
Forgive my ignorance.
Hey OP, that's pretty nice.
How do I not get scammed by buying one on the fucking internet? How can you tell or not whether a cell is original or not?
It all depends on whether or not the studio wanted to sell them in the first place.
Do you have any idea how many cels get made for one episode of a TV show? They don't have the room for all that shit. They either put the important/iconic ones on display somewhere, destroy them, or some staff members gather them up and just sell them. Even Disney does it.
By investing on Canvas Networks
ITT: I don't need it. I don't need it. I don't need it.
You can usually tell it's real if it's not in pristine condition and isn't cropped in like a traced screencap from the actual show would be. Like
Shows animated by Toei in particular used ink that yellowed with age, so ones like are obvious to tell apart.
I don't need it, but if I don't get it it will never appear again and I will forever regret not buying it
Man that on user wasn't lying about Ghibli cels being expensive.
$1800 is a lot of money user. Especially when I don't know for sure the actual worth of something like this.
I'll buy it. Link it
Got this as a secret santa gift one year
God I wish there was some computer technique to more closely emulate cel shading, modern anime really looks plasticy. Kabaneri is doing it pretty well but still.
Just search for Ghost in the Shell cel on ebay.
What do I need to search for in japanese to find these?
Damn son, this looks great. I'm kinda glad I haven't seen this for sale because I would drop like $400-$500 for this.
That one show Tomino did just recently emulated it nicely.
Gundam reconquista? Yeah, how did they do that?
I can hear the DIC
I know who's sucking the DiC!
Looks plastic as fuck, 3 tone shading makes everything look greasy.
When done right it can look gorgeous.
It can be drawn digitally to exact cel shading and look exactly the same. But it's not done because that is seen as old animation in nipland. A wandering autistic tripfag can clue you in in exact detail to what I mean and Sup Forums is not short of them.
I used to own Rei smiling, but I sold it for like ten bucks.
It was probably a reproduction cel, not a huge loss.
Do settei count?
I'll never get collecting cels but I don't judge you for it because it's good to have a nice collection-hobby. I personally collect flags.
cels are the frames used to make the anime aren't they?
Yes, back then. Now traditional animation frames are drawn and colored using art tablets like wacom cintiq so no need for cel screens. The genga or sketches like are sometimes done with pencils like and then scanned to do the lineart and coloring.
This is true for all traditional animation worldwide, not only anime.
Most of what I own. Still debating whether or not I should sell my soul and become an animator.
I'll never get collecting cels
It's nice to have something that's a real piece of what you love, not just a reproduction or merchandise. Sort of the difference between collecting guns and collecting guns that saw combat. Also they make nice decoration, you can have 1 poster or 20 cels on your wall, and because they have simple designs they aren't flashy or tacky like other anime merch you can get.
I personally collect flags.
I certainly hope you don't mean Sup Forums flag icons.
Have fun either moving to Japan and living in sweatshop conditions for years before they let you do key animation, or becoming a slave to calarts and drawing the occasional spongebob or steven universe frame once a year.
something with the way they layered their images?
I'm not too sure but I remember learning about something tomino had them do with the lines
Exactly well looks like im just gonna open my own studio and bring over the cheap Japanese animators to America.
Plus a grain filter over everything
the computer literally works the same as painting in cels. In fact it's better and faster because you can abuse the paintbucket.
The fact that anime nowadays use less shading tones and highlights it's just that times change, even though it could be done easily. Clean drawings have become more popular.
Lately I see a trend of making soft shaded anime like Prision School and Apollon, and gradients like Dagashi Kashi.
Every now and then I want to pick up cels of the childhood boner monsters from Sailor Moon, but stuff from specific episodes is hard to find these days. 90% of the cel sites on the old web listings are all dead. Everybody's on Rubberslug now and that's about it.
SMOKING'S GOOD FOR YOU, YOU KNOW
NO IT'S NOT
Can you draw? Do you have money?
Have money. Know alot about chinese cartoon production and cost but I wouldn't want to open it without first being able to fucking animate. I cant self learn not disciplined enough so I'll have to go to school. Fuck CAL I'll just pull a Fraser and go to Tokyo the rich white weeb.
Do you know how to thrive in this Capitalist world?
The plan would be to shill hard on Sup Forums then open the Kickstarter once that's underway ill rub my hands real hard a pray to Jewish god. By then 3D will have taken over and the old fag animators will join my empire. After that I sign a deal with whoever is the biggest online entertainment service at the time.
Interesting article I stumbled across a few days ago. This thread reminded me of it.
Posting Hibikek genga reprint that I bought from Kyoanus.
I am so jealous of these
You could find them in KyoAni shop in Kyoto if they still have them in stock.
b-but can you animate a character, user?
Just develop a way to get passive income and animate for yourself. Don't make a a career out of it. I regret it.
I own just one. But it's still pretty good.
worst doturd plushie
Lina is pro fag.
shill hard on Sup Forums
Good luck, friend.
Not mine, but damn if I wouldn't want to have one
Can somebody lend me $500 CAD?
I wonder which set is this from.
If I ever bought a cel I think it would be a Cowboy Bebop one. It would be cool to own.
I HAD EYES ON IT FIRST, FAGGOTS
I always find it weird that paint could make these kind of things. I guess years of what I think paint should look like screwed with my mind.
Actually tempted on buying. Somebody else do it before I do.
Next frame, B35, is currently up for $600 on ebay.
go to Ebay
a million CCS cels
all over $40 each
It's in the hundreds, I've lost count.
But user, that's not a production cel, that's a
I don't know what it is.
Why buying this? Print a pic with some filters and it's the same
ESL pls go and stay go
haha, at least try to hide your jealousy when posting, lol!
jealous of a picture
You don't get it, so just don't worry about it.
You fucking spic
kabaneri? I don't understand
Basically they're a part of the creation process of the show
How fragile are these? Hard to conserve?
That's why they look so nice, I thought it was filters. My bad then.
The colour ones are paint/ink
They are actual cels from famous anime, which will pretty much get you pussy on tap whenever you mention it to any bitches, and that is why you're jealous, kid.
For a decent show, without too many stills, about 15 000 including tweenies and OP/ED, which is a few boxes of cels. Even though this actually isn't enough for quite fluent motion budget restrictions mean that often cels are used repeatedly / creatively and stills are employed, reducing the number to maybe 5000 or so. A really high budget show might employ many, many more though.
A few boxes every episode... well, they might keep a few recent shows in storage for remastering, but realistically most cels will be sold or trashed.
I thought it was filters
The fuck does that mean? Are you genuinely, literally retarded?
If so, sorry I called you a spic earlier.
The fuck does that mean?
Like you take a picture, add some photofilters and print it and it looks cool.
Are you genuinely, literally retarded?
I guess that's why I ended up here
I painted cels for a tv show back in the 90's and let me tel you it is a pain in the ass, still felt bretty good when I got to see the cels I painted on screen for about 2 seconds though.
What show did you work on, user?
I want this. Does that count?
It was animated by a Japanese team
Animation in a nutshell
Eh.... rotoscoped grandfathered kid fucking cells. Traced from real video that's now against the rules. Maybe I'll post them in /h/ one day. I'm still a bit in the air on whether it breaks the rules if it's drawn but based directly on real video.
That second horn looks like one of those mind controlling zombie fungi.
Didn't understood shit but there ain't any rules.
Well you're a fucking retard.
It's clearly an antenna. I bet she gets great reception.
I don't even understand what you just said.
Is this even English?
What the fuck?
Any idea of why do they color them this way?
I get the color pencil things when they're just a few lines, but these kind of quick coloring doesn't seem to be of any utility, I might be wrong though
He rotoscoped some cels.
And given that they are pornographic in nature, might post them on /h/ one day.
I hope you do post them.
Just this, I wanted to get one with GNR but they were unavailable/prohibitively expensive
does that face represent how you felt when you bought that cel?
Yeah I guess that's a pretty good way to look at it
I remembered that I'd saved all of my old auction win emails. I paid around $110 for the pair back in 2004, and that was including shipping from Japan. The first one would probably only around $200 now because the figure is relatively small, but the full face one should be at least $600.
No. The cells were drawn from live video kiddie porn. Rotoscoped sketched. It was from a Russian kiddie nomad rape flick in the 90s. Unfortunately the cdr I had of it got too old and couldn't copy.
Back up your cds people!
How do guys know it´s genuine article? I mean is it not easy to fake/copy it?
Why would you rotoscope something like that?
Not me! It was done by some underground russian animators back in the 90s. I don't know much about them really but it's got to be a part of animation history.
bootleg rotoscoped russian child porn animation
that is probably one of the most niche things i've ever heard of
where the shit do you even buy something like that
actually i dont want to know
I have cels from JJBA OVA and The Dog of Flanders movie. I was surprised how cheap the cel was for the latter because it's a really nice close up of Pastrache.
Do you have the cel of Vanilla Thrice poking his head out of the hole in the ground
Do newer shows not have cels?
Those colors are used to indicate where the shiage/colorist/cleanup should fill in the shades and light source.
I like it!
I don't know how it works, do you have both, coloured, and lined?
Nope. Digital animation, mate.
Yes, bought straight from japan.
I love the precision these lines were drawn, you dont see any corrections, just look at the eye lashes, each of these is unique and pure art.
Price: US $895.00
Life is suffering
for the glory
I got it in a trade at comic shop in 2001. He was going out of business and we were quasi friends. I remember watching the vcd that went along with it way back in the day. I really need to find a way to get that cd copied to disk.
If I ever take it to Chesapeake collectable or antiques roadshow, I'm sure it would be way more valuable together than separate.
I'm sure it's gotta be some historical thing in underground animation back in the day.
You'd be arrested if you tried to sell it
Keep this thread going until I get home and I'll show you some I feel comfortable posting.
No I wouldn't. It's drawn. By hand.
The fact it was sketched and crudely colored and shaded from video doesnt mean anything.
Posting more hibikek layout reprints
In some jurisdictions, if it was "traced" then that counts as the real thing. The real bummer with this is that the law enforcement authorities have the largest collection in the world, so you may not think it's traced by they might well say it is.
No, I have one of D'Arby shuffling his card deck.
One of the last shows that did was Higurashi IIRC
Rule of thumb, the cels that have a character with their eyes open are worth more than one where their eyes are shut.
no fucking shit
There are a lot of retards in the thread.
Maybe some day. I'm still not at a stage were I feel comfortable spending mad dosh on a handful of cels or genga. When I get enough disposable income I might hunt and frame some favorites. So far just production note/concept/art work/groundwork artbooks and the figure collection.
So do you guys frame this shit?
I'd seriously consider buying that if I could prove it was real.
Is it possible to regather all the evangelion cells and reshoot the series?
in the same way its possible to collect the 7 dragonballs, I guess.
The better option would just be to write a program to chop episode files into images frame by frame, then printing those out, I guess.
You mean digitally colored. Most of the time they still animate on papers, only then they outline, color and refine the frames using animation software.
The better option would just be to write a program to chop episode files into images frame by frame
just use video to image converter, user. It works most of the time.
According to RX they might start using HDR in the new BD transfers for stuff.
video to image convert
waifu2x every frame
clean each frame's colors to vector quality
string them together at 24fps and digitally regrain them
Still bummed about that flooded episode, huh?
This is douga, user..
This is a sample of an anime OP.
how does these things work?
What's wrong with douga?
I changed the title to avoid infringement, user.
It's a Digimon OP.
Get the fuck off Sup Forums.
Can't help but think you are being a little too harsh there, cels are from a bygone age.
all these unframed cels and dougas
that's cel? the colors and all looks digital as fuck
I hope you are just pretending to be retarded.
Then the blu ray remaster looked blurry as fuck compared to this picture
Because they used the old masters I guess, they didn't rescan the cels and all. I wonder how would look an old anime with cels rescanned with digital method. Probably a bit like the pictures posted here.
I'd post mine but it's at home.
its a gooks trying to sell me something thread.
Until the currency exchange rate recovers i aint buying shit.
Only one, but it's from my favorite anime.
From this scene.
what's wrong with collecting Cels
some of us like to collect cels for its art value, not autographs.
Are there any shows that reuse cels a shitton? Not animation, but just the cel.
Great taste, user!
You can but sunlight can damage cels so the glass should protect against uv rays
Can't stand looking at people saving thumbnails
Was EMS raised because of the currency drop?
I doubt there exists a collection of all cels used from a show anywhere
Damn, she's gorgeous
Can anyone tell me why they draw it on paper and color/outline it digitally nowadays? It feels like you could have just drawn it digitally to begin with. Is it easier to organize with all the papers or something?
It's just easier to draw on paper and to be precise. But there are most and most people drawing digitally too. Bahi JD draws digitally.
Computers are also increasingly used for tweening and compositing, which accounts for much of the increase of technical quality these days. (Whether artistic quality has increased is a matter of opinion. I really love 80s character designs.)
fuck me nigga i've seen thepricing, how much is that one going for?
Good thread, thanks Sup Forums
Does anime use tweening now? I thought all the between frames were drawn.
It's about precision and feel, I guess. Both have different kind of 達成感 depending on animators.
Computer are still use for refining outlines and in-betweens and for compositing.
tweening is an old terms for in-between, user. That's before flash even existed.
They are. I don't know what he's talking about, except maybe he talks about when a single drawing "slides" on the screen.
Or maybe Ping Pong and the likes use tweening I'm not sure, since they are on Flash.
Well yeah, but in this case he meant the computer doing the inbetween work rather than being drawn by hand. As far as I was aware other than a few series like ping pong most inbetweens were drawn by hand.
There are companies that are using computers to do in-betweens. You can totally find any animation wares besides flash to draw in-betweens with graphic tablets. You can even use ToonBoom for that.
Is that bad?
Tweening is whatever method you use (by hand, computer, combination of both) to draw in-between frames.
If you're looking at a high-fps action scene, it's probably CG or computer-assisted tweening, since high-fps hand-drawn tweening is too costly and time-consuming to be practical in most cases.
To save costs animation by hand can be drawn at 2x, which means ‘repeat every frame’ or ‘run at half fps’. And that's half of 24, not half of sixty. Not everything is drawn at 2x, but this gives you an impression of how hard it is to get high framerates using hand-drawn animation.
No. Unless the animator become lazy and use motion tweening graph or puppet models.
Interesting. Do you know any examples of high fps actions scenes that are hand-drawn with no short cuts? I'm curious as to what it looks like.
Disney 2d movies usually goes up to 12-24fps.
Anime are usually done in 8-12 fps.
24fps scenes generally don't happen. Frame step through an action scene you like sometime and you'll see it's typically only a new image every other frame even for movies.
Ghibli films animate on ones sometimes. Akira and Redline have moments, too. If you want specific scenes from random sources no one will be able to help you, but the money shots from high budget shit can reach 24fps on occasion.
Neo Sup Forums knows absolutely nothing about cels it seems from reading the thread. However old Sup Forums is still good.
I remember having cels as a kid, I wonder where did they end up. I'm sure someone threw them away.
Where do you guys buy these?
So how many times would I have to suck your dick to cop one of these off you?
BJ / ($400 or $600)
How much is a BJ?
($400 or $600) over BJ
I dunno, I'll have to ask your mom what the current running price is.
I'm a Reifag and even I want it.
Is there any way to authenticate these things? I'm seriously thinking about buying one for my birthday or something, but I don't want a fake.
And last one
Just started collecting
How do they remaster older anime if they sell the cels? Don't they need them all to make a BD release or something?
They have the original film
Damn, where do you buy these?
Goddamn I can hear the rage
They don't reanimate the entire damn show user, they take the film and scan it to a higher standard.
no Shampoo cels on ebay
all record of lodoss war cels I can find on the internet are either shit for hundreds of dollars
would kill for this, fuck what anyone says about the show being garbage
just go buy the groundwork or layout collection books. They are cheaper.
I could never believe it's real. There has to be a way though right?
Find one you like, post it here, and see if someone could authenticate it. I still wouldn't trust it though.
owning best girl
and i thought i was jealous of other people in this thread
Got it in Nakano for $40
Oh fuck. I'm jelly. Any more G Gundam?
Listed on ebay. Buy it, you know you want to.
Such a great Misato.
anyone have any monogatari ones?
Are you really this stupid?
Just to be clear, each cell is one of a kind right?
How do you differentiate an original from a fake? Is it common for a copy to be sold as the real thing?
Maybe he means a sketch?
What is the most recent show to use and release cells? Anyone know?
They didn't use cel anymore. Those layouts posted here are drawn on papers (pegged papers to be exact) and are reprinted onto cardboards.
These are the one of the packs that contains layouts posted here.
each cell is one of a kind right?
Is it common for a copy to be sold as the real thing?
Conmen exist everywhere user. Be wary of jews and convention salesmen.
What are the original keyframe drawings called and what is the japanese equivalent? I want to buy some if they still sell them on the KyoAni store
Just as I was about to post a corrected version, thanks user
Do you know if they ship internationally?
What are the original keyframe drawings called and what is the japanese equivalent?
genga 原画 or layouts
I don't know user. I bought them in Kyoto last year.
This thread renewed my belief that Sup Forums actually cares about anime rather than being stupid teenagers and early 20s following whatever garbage is churned out each season.
Thanks, I mean it.
Were you one of the lucky fuckers at AX 2015 who won the rock, paper, scissors tournament at the Trigger panel?
Hold on there cowboy, there is a great deal of dumbfucks in the thread that know jack shit about how animation works. Not totally dead just dying.
Where would sell these? I want one of Reuenthal from LoGH but Ebay doesn't have any.
Are there any tricks to searching for particular cels?
I'd pay up to 1,000 dollars for one of pic related
The most known example is THAT scene from Dissapperance of Haruhi.
Ha try 10,000. The nips get the best picks years before we do.
I don't see the problem with that as long as they ask. I mean sure you should know how anime is generally made before you post here but it's better than mouthing off complete bullshit like 50% of Sup Forums.
Use this link and find something nice.
Did animators actually use real paint to colour in cels back in the day ? How the fuck does it look so clean like someone just clicked on a paint fill tool in ms paint ?
They would paint underneath the cel
Yes and the painting work was pain in the ass.
To spend or not to spend. This urbantreasurehunterjapan has a ton of cels.
Damn. This is gold.
I don't remember this scene from the anime.
If anyone has a cel from Redline, please share it so I can vent my jealousy and lavish you over how exquisite your taste is. Because fug man, I can't find anything relating to production cels for this movie, it sucks.
I would love to get my hands on this bad boy.
tfw it might be stuck in a box somewhere or worse, destroyed
Price: US $895.00
And best of all it's fake. None of the Eva cels you see online are real. Just really nice looking bootlegs.
The only "real" Eva cels are the Cellu-Club ones, and even those are simply reproductions.
Could any of these be real? Maybe production staff.
the keyframes for this show look absolutely awesome, but is it actually a good show? should I watch it? Kyoani has burned me before. Like I wanted to like amagi brilliant park because they tempted me with lucious ass in the first episode. but then NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENED.
It was a decent show. At least much better than Chuuni, KnK and PW.
Remember that time a guy was killed over a cell of Eva-01 screaming, covered in blood?
It makes me think of those double dildos that go in a girl's vagina and anus at the same time.
It's highly unlikely. The only legit cel I'm aware of sold on Manda years ago for almost $4,000. There have been a few others probably, but again that was almost a decade ago.
If you see an Eva cel, and it doesn't look like its from the Cellu-Club set, it's almost certainly not legit. This is all for the original TV run mind you, I think EoE is slightly different. I believe there might be some legit cels out there for EoE, don't quote me on that though.
Chuuni was the best of those 3 you listed, just the blueballing and change of timeline in the adaptation made it more irritating.
Not that far behind Eupho
How does one verify if a cell is authentic?
Yeah, it's worth watching. It's a "hard work fulfills dreams" anime that is pretty well done, interesting characters, actual progression.
not posting it
not having the file name be Ghost in the Cell
Only reason that I'd believe the ones in that ebay listing are real is that they aren't of popular characters necessarily.
I mean everything else is pretty much fake on ebay. Just from the first page.
Wish I had something to contribute, great collections anons.
No those are still almost certainly fake. Eva had 6 hand painted reproduction cels that were released (as a part of the Cellu-Club series) and all of them had a GAINAX seal of authenticity on them, those clearly don't nor are they any of the 6 cels from the series, so they're definitely fake as well.
To be honest, I wouldn't mind a fake cel, for the right price naturally, as most of them look pretty damn good assuming it's actually paint on the cel and not just ink from a machine.
They had to, scenes like that don't look believable at 2x.
This is probably the only legitimate one I could find, but it's already sold.
Yeah, that's legit (just look at the other pictures in the listing). But again, that's still not a production cel (GAINAX never actually officially released those), only a reproduction. Still released and licensed by GAINAX nonetheless.
Is that from the final Raoh fight? Looks like that background but I know they reused a lot
this is digital, familia.
pretty sure you could get some douga/genga though
Sup Forums is legitimately the best board and by far the best place on the internet to discuss either animation or anime in general. If others have told you otherwise and you believed them you have been led astray.
I have a few Eva, Jubei-chan, Bubblegum Crisis and 2040 and 2 Ghost in the Shell cels.
Lot of people talking about the eva cels being fake. Which ones do you have?
To the best of my knowledge, no Eva production cels were ever released to the public. The reason was that Gainax decided to keep the cels for future remastering. Because fans clamoured for them and Gainax smelt money they copied a few and sold those. I don't know what happened to the original cels; they might have been trashed but I think it's more likely that Gainax still has them in storage and given that Eva is still big, they'll probably keep them around just in case they want to do a high-resolution remastering in the future for which the film isn't good enough.
No? What's the full story? Is it in the archive?
Cels are notoriously easy to fake. The whole point of the cel process is to make it possible and cost-effective to produce thousands of frames with a consistent look. And with all studios using pretty much the same materials, even an expert couldn't really say for sure unless the fake was really badly done.
You could maybe tell a fake by forensic analysis of the paints/inks used compared to those of a known original. But if you don't have a known original then that won't help you either.
Basically, if you have a DVD/BD of the anime then you can capture any frame and from that produce a fake douga and a fake cel. You can count the cels used in the cut and then work out the cel number and probably the layer too to make it look even more authentic.
Of course if you see two identical cels then at least one of them is fake, but there's really no advantage for a forger to do the same cel over so they'll probably take a complete cut and do all the cels in it in one sitting so that the paint colours are consistent.
Another thing often said is that cels with the characters' eyes closed are more likely to be genuine because cels with eyes open generally fetch higher prices, but who's to say there isn't some reverse psychology going on there? Maybe the forger is more likely to do eyes closed cels because they are more likely to be believed to be genuine.
At the end of the day, there is no knowing whether a "genuine production cel" is real or not, unless you actually went to the studio yourself and bought it. All that matters, like with any purchase, is if you're happy with it for the money you paid.
Even forensic analysis isn't going to help very much, because of common cel materials and inks. And you'd need an expert to tell – good luck finding one outside Japan. And not enough documentation remains, so unless an entire production run of cells has been sold and many of them are available for comparison, often even people who worked at the studio don't know which materials were originally used in the first place.
common cel materials and inks
I'm not sure how anime studios handled things, but Western studios generally mixed up large batches of paints for each colour and shade used so as to ensure consistency across a season or a movie. I guess that wouldn't work though with the outsourcing done in Japan, so maybe they just used stock colours and used Pantone references or the like to get consistency.
Here is three of my favorite out of about 20 Eva cels.
And do I know if they are fake or not, well these are no Picaso or Rembrant paintings and I have had the majority of these for many years so no I do not think these are fake. There are many rumours about the lack of releasing these cels by Gainex but the majority of cels that are out there, apparently most were taken by staff over time. Its not like there is one or two cels per scene, there are many cels that make the scenes but Gainex probably has the main key cels locked away. Also if you notice, many of the Eva cels are either from the first few episodes and in the middle but not many else where in the series.
the first few episodes and in the middle
Isn't Rei with toast from the last episode?
it symbolizes a slice of life
Dammit......'I do not know if these are fake or not'
Sorry typing on the phone.
How much did you pay for those three user?
Yeah very rare for something like that. I knew of someone who had a scene from the intro a few years ago but I dont know if he still has that.
Yeah it is and I'm fairly certain cels from the last few episodes are very rare.
I bought these around 2005-06 and the $AU was crap against the $US but I paid $600 for Rei, $500 for the two Evas and I think $300 for Unit 1.
How many copies of each cell exists? Is it usually one per cell?
looks pretty fake to me
the paint is way too smooth
Okay, I was worried you were going to say something like $100-200. I've been wanting to buy a few more and more every day despite the fact that all of my knowledge regarding them goes against their validity.
All I have is this and another one
Yeah not in person buddy, close up a lot of blemishes and the old pencil drawing pages that have been ripped of the back.
That's the whole point. Each production cel is a one-off original and is different from every other cel because why would they go to the expense of making a second identical cel?
I can see that working for a film, but for a television series? I doubt it, and I doubt it would be necessary. Anime is a big industry, ink manufacturers can sell lots of ink, so if you're producing an anime, chances are you're able to find inks you like.
I've seen a documentary about, granted, a German animation studio and even there they were inking straight out of the little paint bottles, which looked exactly like those you can buy in a hobby shop. They weren't using custom mixes.
That wouldn't be a good representation of authenticity. They kept these things in good shape, assuming that's a legit production cel, and all of the previous owners also took good care of them then they could easily look the same as they did 25 years ago.
I get why they're so rare and expensive then
Forgive the shitty photo quality, never got them laminated and don't want to touch them anymore as the markers are wearing off
Basically these were signed and drawn on by Atsushi Nishigori (who drew the Daiganzan flipping me off), Yoh Yoshinari (who drew the Spiral King), Akai and others (don't have the full list in my head anymore)
The most outrageous thing someone brought to this autograph session was a toilet seat he had them draw on
Sorry I do potentially have a fake Eva cel which close up is too smooth and clear. I dont know for sure it is but I do have some slight doubt about it.
Here is the crown piece of my collection. As Sadamoto drew her for me, I stood there crying like a kid.
Sorry for posting these in a Cel thread.
Cool stuff user. When'd you get these autographed?
apparently most were taken by staff over time
That's the kind of thing I'd tell people if I wanted to sell a fake cel.
By the way, I've got a bridge to sell you. It's in good condition and connects two shores of a major European port city. You'll make a million in fares.
2008, Connichi (Germany).
What's she drawn onto?
Got it from Anime Expo I see.
Microsoft Surface's backside
He asked how big, I replied "whatever size he wants" to the translator
Two from first Ghost in the Shell movie. One of the major and the other is Batou when they're on the boat after she deep sea dives.
Shit man, I'd probably never use that surface again if that was me, or at least get the backside replaced. I'd worry too much about the marker rubbing off or getting damaged.
I'm fucking impressed this got so much replies.
Yoshinari draws the sexiest lines in the world.
Old Sup Forums really showed up here. Plus most threads regarding chink paraphernalia do well anyway.
half the thread is Eva related
Not even surprised.
It's a genuinely interesting thread compared to the rest out there. Also partly because of Evangelion and 90's anime.
What if I got both? Character artist was there too but he was taking a shit or something. Still mad.
the small blue poster
I can't express how fucking jealous I am with words, it looks like a painting.
Where did you get that done?
It's an artbook
Every time I'm in Japan and scout Nakano and other places I'm tempted by these but then I don't want to get burned by the honorary jews so I buy rare soundtracks and idol shit that is less fun but at least 99.999% legit. But I would kill for some good legit cels from my favourite shows from the 90s when I grew up.
S-should I just not give a fuck and give in?
Last time Sadamoto was in Germany
The thumbnail makes the censoring look like very erect and puffy nipples.
hell yeah, the top floor in Nakano Broadway is where I got all my cels and storyboards.
toast symbolizes a slice of life.
Anno does it again!
Original art by these people
So fucking jealous.
Yeah, but I know it's said multiple times in the thread already but I would feel very stupid paying $100+ for a $2 fake and I doubt being in Japan makes it any more safe.
I avoided cels before because I had no money and now that I kinda do I avoid them too because they went way up in price since digital paint took over and I have no clue how to tell fakes. It's totally new territory for me and I hate feeling like a clueless idiot, especially when it's clueless idiots who get scalped the most.
I'd wager knowledgeable collectors get scalped as often as clueless idiots.
Probably. If I was a cell painter who'd lost my job because of digital paint, I could earn much more per cel by making fakes than I ever got making genuine ones.
That kinda defies the point of collecting cels for their value as something physically used in the show then, no? It just means you're rich enough to spend hundreds or more on a pretty picture that just accidentally may be a genuine production cel.
Wow. I never really thought about it from that perspective.
So if the studio's would sell the cels they have, they could afford to pay their animators a much better wage than they do.
Pretty sure those violate US law and therefore Sup Forums rules, hope your little confession doesn't earn you a trip in the party van.
this is digital, familia.
Is that supposed to be bad or anything? Normally, when you work on animation, you have to draw key frames out, so I'm sure this movie isn't any different. There is a couple of art books out for Redline that I would love to get my hands on, but a production cel would be even better to have.
Read up on what a cel is. Drawn keyframes =/= cels.
Since this is a chill and mature thread, I'm going to go ahead and ask it here.
I've been extremely busy with work for about a year, has anything come out recently that's worth watching? The last season I followed was the one that had Ninja Slayer.
If you liked Ninja Slayer watch Uchuu Patrol Luluco.
their value as something physically used in the show
That would be about a dollar, maybe two. After all, that's what studio's are paying the animators. The rest is rarity value.
The entirety of Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Biker chick and her Tesi 1D were the best thing about Golden Boy
I have one more thing to show you, this one I got back in 2003 when I bothered the poor man during his spare time (he was outside on a smoke break).
His booth was always surrounded so I was unable to get an autograph this way, but even in his spare time Urushihara was kind enough to draw Teeta for me.
Which had a $ 58 M budget. For a box-office hit worth six times as much, this is acceptable. For a television anime episode, it isn't.
And that was in 80s bux. It takes an army of animators to take no shortcuts.
It takes an army of animators to take no shortcuts.
And a fitting number of casualties. Long hours, eye strain and RSI abound.
Yup. In today's money that would be $ 117 M: more than twice as much.
By the way, do you know about the Dip in the movie? Well, I've heard some animation studios used to clean cels and reuse them to save money. (A similar thing happened to lots of old television programmes: the tapes got reused. It always amazes me that we do these things over and over and nobody thinks ‘hey, maybe this might be worth a lot or become irreplaceable’.)
Actually just wanted an excuse to post Kuromi itt
It always amazes me that we do these things over and over and nobody thinks ‘hey, maybe this might be worth a lot or become irreplaceable’.
That's what my father used to think. Three years now since he's kicked the bucket and I'm still cleaning the house out of all sorts of collectible shit he's amassed.
Obviously some of his collector's mentality has rubbed off on me so I didn't just trash all stuff I didn't care about, but I would need another lifetime and a half to really understand the value of it, stamps and coins being the easiest. So I'm just doing a semi-half-assed job trying to value it and not sell it at too much of a loss.
tl;dr don't do it to your kids and don't collect too much shit, thanks for reading my blog.
tl;dr don't make your kids suffer and don't reproduce
At least if I don't reproduce, my kids won't complain about me.
You lucky prince.
Fucking jealous of you all, especially the guy who met Sadomoto
I don't even know what my dream cel would be, from evangelion most likely
How can you tell what's fake or not?
See: , , , , and tl;dr You can't; Eva's are fake; hope for the best.
Of course there are no corrections in douga.
Late but here it is
Met them at AX but I didn't win that rock paper scissors thing.
In fact the cels you're talking about had been rescanned once for the Laserdisc release (which, up until the BD release, was the best possible image quality for Evangelion) and have probably been transferred to Khara by now since Khara now own Evangelion and are putting out BDs of the TV series.
That being said, I know that back in the 90s Animators did not refrain from stealing cels to sell them and earn cash on the side.
I don't think they rescanned the cels. The quality of the existing film should be good enough even for 1080.
Redoing from the original cels and backgrounds is a lot of work, they won't do it unless the original film is unworkable for the new medium.
You can find some things on ebay still
As for douga and genga, would it be any easier to tell if they're fake or not? A couple I've been eyeing seem to be done on their company paper. Says their studio on the corner as well as time and frame.
Wait, they redraw the linework digitally? I thought they redraw/clean up traditionally and then just scan it and color it using those lines.
Both actually. The draw it traditionally, then colour it on the computer method came first. Even then you don't need cel anymore though: you can just draw it on paper.
The first panty and stocking artbook is hilarious because first there's Nishigari's all concept work over panty and stocking and how he kept developing them overtime and they're all quite nicely drawn even though they're sketches.
Then at the end there's Yoshinari's fucking amazing sketches
but in the middle we have Imaishi, who really doesn't give a fuck when sketching.
iirc the TV tapes of Evangelion were pretty exhausted, there was a digital rework made in Germany that blew up the colors and was used as base for subsequent releases but the image quality of that is completely different than the LD release, so the alleged rescan of the cels sounds pretty likely desu
Recent douga and genga were reproduced or reprinted by the company and they are official goods. They are less pricey than cels, but it depends on the company itself. Hibike Eupho's genga posted here are sold in packs. Each pack contains 10 reprinted genga and is sold for 2000 yen each (tax excluded).
I remember when the NGE BD box came out the rippers and encoders were bitching a lot about shitty grain and coloring inconsistencies between episodes. From that it doesn't sound like they re-shot it.
It's not like the master film copies get run down from use, they're not meant to be used but stored, so the only deterioration is from the film medium itself (especially if stored in shitty conditions). But you can still scan it in 4K easily and work from there, which I hope is what they did rather than just settling on 2K transfer.
I wonder if anyone has a cel/key frame of the scene in Golden boy where he watch an animator draw a lewd key frame.
AAAAAAAAAAAAA IF I ONLY HAD THE MONEY
fuck being pisspoor on a third world country
Not exactly a cell, though I'd give a kidney for one with that frame (even if they're not the originals, as long as it has a Gainax/Khara seal it's ok for me), but I saw an autographed Asuka over here, so I guess it's ok for me to show this too?
I still can't believe how lucky I am. I never thought I would be owning this one day.
when she sees the D
Reminds me of The Story of Little Monica.
Come across the border before the wall is build.
I have a 35mm frame from Totoro somewhere
So would the originals actually be done in pencil or does that only apply to older series? Being reprints, I can see why they'd be less expensive.
Most anime genga and douga are done in pencils, even now. They would outline them in shiage/cleanup stage before filling in the colors. Only few companies rely on animation software to do douga.
Anyone know what this means? 総作監修正集 Not getting what "Tadashisu" is.
collection of revised materials by animation director, I guess,
C U T E
Send it to moot.
