Can we just take a moment and discuss how amazing this show is?
It's got to be one of the best things I've seen past 5 years or or so.
Why does no one appreciate it or give it the credit it's due?

Most of the people seem to shit on it because of the pacing and not understanding what's going on so they drop it like 5 episodes in.

And that is not okay.

I didn't have any issues with it aside from the fact that it almost tried to be Baccano a bit harder than it should've but that's not even a big problem.

What is wrong with people.

I don't know if it's just a case of the adaptation skipping or rushing stuff but everything felt so half-assed, like the author couldn't be bothered to flesh out anything in real detail so they just did some name drops and quick flashes of text exposition. Like they were trying to rush stuff to get to the main story points. Only the story points also felt half-assed and rushed. You have isolated moments of good shit, like that chess game Klaus played, but it's just lazily grafted onto this larger half-assed plot. Like, the whole thing was him trying to get information that ends up going nowhere really.

So basically it's just a bunch of rushed, half-assed ideas, some of them pretty cool ideas, stacked into an underwhelming pile. I thought the ending had far more purpose and direction to it than the 11 episodes that came before it, which I think only proves how the majority of the story was lacking coherent vision.

There were too many characters, and not enough screentime for them to share, as a result some supporting cast isn't fleshed out as much as they could be. It's sad since it could have been so much better if it had like 24 eps with dedicated eps for most of the support cast.

Terrible first two episodes (the reason most people just dropped it)
Characters are only interesting on the most superficial level
Interesting setting is only explored in depth in one episode (the rest of the time it's just a setup for some completely typical plotline)
That episode is one of only two genuinely good ones
The original villians that fit the setting perfectly and were kind of entertaining are replaced by a generic edgelord
Fights have very little sense of scale and the stakes are often very unclear
And so on and so forth. The only real positive for the show in general was a really good soundtrack

Austin King

Oliver Thomas
Oliver Thomas

Since when is six specific reason why it's bad "just calling it bad?"

Because splitting up a show into different little categories and calling them bad is no different from calling the whole thing bad.

Consider this:

Show is bad.

Vs.

Shows art is bad.
Shows music is bad.
Shows characters are bad.
Shows fights are bad.
Shows setting is bad.

You aren't saying anything different than in the first section. And even if you were to say that the music was a good part of the show, that STILL says nothing because you cannot compare different elements together. You can only compare elements with each other.

The better way to do it is to compare it to another show, let's say for example K-On!.

The shows art is terrible compared to K-On! etc.

That way it says more about your tastes, and also directly compares the show to something you find superior. Which also has the effect of making the inferiorities actually stand out. That is of course if your taste is any good. Otherwise your own bad taste will stand out and you will get ridiculed.

Jose Scott

Except that's not what I said. I explained why the fights were bad, how the setting was misused, and why the characters were uninteresting. You can't just pretend I didn't.
If you want how things could have been done better, I can try offering some stuff. For the characters, they really just needed more episodes specifically about some of the characters instead of just having them show up for a fight occasionally.
As to the setting, they should have had more episodes like five, where they actually explored what this new world meant and how it affected people, instead of just having it be an excuse for the characters to get involved in death games or random fights with monsters.
As to the fights, they needed to somehow make it more clear how big these monsters were and how much damage they were capable of dealing, and moreover how much that damage mattered. This is probably the point I'm least confident on, because the effect of not knowing how big these creatures are may have been intended. But at the very least they could have had some more interesting monster designs.

I'm not going to compare it to anything in specific, that nearly always comes off as either unfair, an invalid comparison, or just me missing the point. Moreover, we're not comparing tastes, we're talking about a specific show. You might have great taste and just be wrong about this particular show, and I might have terrible taste and be right about this particular show, or any other mix of those elements. It's wholly irrelevant.

Colton Fisher
Colton Fisher

Hibike Euphonium is a better anime than Kekkai Sensen.

Austin Ward
Austin Ward

Weird, I had the reverse reaction. I didn't dislike the episodes the first time but they always felt too chaotic or like they didn't live up to my expectations. Rewatches were a lot more enjoyable and easy to follow and I could catch little details I missed.

Hudson Evans
Hudson Evans

I liked it when it was airing but the way the last episode took forever to come out gave me time to realize the show is all style and no substance.

All the characters are underdeveloped and it seems like shit was happening without any explanation but people accepted it because it looked rad and
if I don't understand it at first glance, it must be deep

Had a fantastic OP tho

Xavier Anderson
Xavier Anderson

I explained why the fights were bad, how the setting was misused, and why the characters were uninteresting.

And yet offered no examples to the contrary.

I mean your first sentence alone is pure bullshit. First two episodes are uninteresting? The first was great and had a lot more happen of interest than most first episodes period.

All you are doing is suggesting improvements, which is fine. But to say something is shit because you can improve it is, again, bullshit. You can improve anything, and there is no upper limit towards improvement. Or rather there is, and that's the personal limitation of somebodies imagination.

All comparisons are "unfair", because there will always be one that comes out to be better in the end. That's the entire point of comparison. Invalid comparisons only happen if you are an imbecile, and you should only be worried about these if you are worried you are an imbecile.

John Wilson
John Wilson

All the characters are underdeveloped

I noticed this as well, aside from White, Leo, and maybe her brother, I really didn't care about any of the characters. Like said the only good episodes were 5 and 6, I don't remember or care about the others.

ED is one of the best though.

Leo left a hidden message in his text with the BB's true name then stalled long enough for Libra to discover it and get to the hotel. He cracks Gamimotz's god eye who freaks out and decides to just kill him instead, Leo shields Michella from him. Gamimotz gets btfo by Klaus and Michella meets Libra. The "I'm proud of you" scene from the finale was basically taken from the last chapter and Michella explains the tortoise knight thing to Klaus and asks him to take care of her brother.

I don't think anyone thought it was deep, if they did then they're retarded. But anime is an entertainment medium so if something entertains people then they will likely praise it for doing its job. I will never understand this style over substance criticism being applied to a commercial product because style and substance are both equally valid if the viewer enjoys the experience.

You really want everything to be explained? Would this show have been better if it had the narrator from HxH, and every episode was spread out over 5 episodes each?

Fortunately for you, your time was never valuable in the first place if you spend it on watching any kind of anime or shitpost on Sup Forums.

I don't need to offer examples to the contrary, because I've explained why they don't work. You don't get to dictate to me how to argue, if you disagree with my points you need to explain why. Moreover, you should probably start offering me examples of why the show is so good, and I certainly hope you apply your own critique philosophy to any of those good features.

To the point of the first two episodes, fine, I didn't explain myself there, so I will.
The first episode is one half flat exposition and one half confusing fight scene. Now not every show needs to start in media res, mind you, and opening exposition isn't always the worst thing ever, but to literally just have what is essentially the narrator of the show flatly describe the backstory of the world while watching the MC wander around town is just dull. A world can be interesting on an intrinsic level, but in a narrative work you need to connect the world to how characters are specifically affected by it in order for it to be well integrated. The fight scene after the flat exposition isn't terrible, but it's very unclear what the monster is, how dangerous it is, how one could go about defeating it, etc. This makes it very difficult to get invested in the fight.
The second episode is just boring. Kid gets kidnapped and Libra goes and saves him. Nothing about anything is learned in the episode and it's generally just a huge waste of time.

The reason many comparisons come of as unfair is because two shows often have different goals as far as what they were trying to portray or get at, so to say that one show does something better than another in every way is often times wrong because the two shows might not have been trying to do the same thing in the first place. Case in point would be the first episode fight scene. Although I could name plenty of fights that I think are better due to their more clear sense of scale and danger, the confusion I experienced might have been entirely intentional..

They were both pretty good in my opinion, but Kyousougiga dropped the ball a little harder if you ask me.
Calm down, guy. I like KS too but you don't have to breathe down everyone's necks if they don't like it.

This isn't even the only recent show to get a reaction like that, people bitched the same way about G-Reco. Say what you will about the show's pacing, but the plot was in no way hard to follow.

I was just attempting to help you not sound like every other moron who just calls something shit and leaves it at that.

it's very unclear of what the monster is, how dangerous it is, how one could go about defeating it

Well that's a personal problem, since they literally explain that in the episode.

nothing about anything is learned in the second episode

Except we get further understanding of the MCs powers.

As for the different "goals" thing, they can also be compared. For example an action packed show can be compared to a slice of life, and the slice of life written off as boring.

Really your posts just ooze with the inability to criticise anything, seeing as how you aren't able to bring up any decent points. The only reason I've even been replying to you and not simply chuckled and written you off as a retard is because I'm feeling particularly magnanimous right now.

Even now you still can't compare this show with anything else, despite me explaining why you should, numerous times.

if you disagree with my points

What am I disagreeing with? "I found the characters boring", well if you genuinely found them boring, then how the fuck am I supposed to disagree? "Wrong you found them interesting"? What a fucking joke. Once again to beat it into your skull, supposing you're actually able to understand this, if you do not compare it to something else there is no reference point with which to judge why you feel a certain way about something. I couldn't care less about whether you found the show boring, but if you think that K-On! is more interesting that is a different story.

Well that's a personal problem, since they literally explain that in the episode.
Did they? Then what would have happened if they were unable to stop the creature?

Except we get further understanding of the MCs powers.
This could have been done in literally any episode. You don't need an entire episode to establish that MC can hijack people's eyes, you can just have him do that at some point.

As for the different "goals" thing, they can also be compared. For example an action packed show can be compared to a slice of life, and the slice of life written off as boring.
This is literally my exact point you dipshit. This is a completely useless comparison because a SoL is not intended to be exciting. The goals of the two are completely different so to say that an SoL is crap because it isn't exciting is to completely miss the point of the SoL.

Really your posts just ooze with the inability to criticise anything, seeing as how you aren't able to bring up any decent points. The only reason I've even been replying to you and not simply chuckled and written you off as a retard is because I'm feeling particularly magnanimous right now.
And your posts ooze with undeserved smugness and total misunderstanding of anything I'm trying to say.

What am I disagreeing with? "I found the characters boring", well if you genuinely found them boring, then how the fuck am I supposed to disagree?
That's not what I said, but to respond to you and points, I'll explain myself. The characters, despite having interesting designs and falling into somewhat interesting archetypes, are not explored in any significant depth, and many aren't explored at all. At least half of the characters are completely throwaways that beat some guys up or job in a few episodes and essentially never do anything other than that.

Anyways, my all so important comparison is coming up so I hope you're ready.

Even now you still can't compare this show with anything else
Fine, you want me to compare it with something? Fine, I'll compare the first episode of Kekkai Sensen to the first episode of K-on! K-on's first episode blows this one out of the water immediately by introducing us to the MC, Yui, with subtle context clues. Her lateness, clumsiness, and general confusion tell us nearly everything we need to know about her starting point as a character as she heads to school. These traits are confirmed during her first scene at school, in which she laments the fact that she has no idea what club she wants to join.

The rest of the episode masterfully sets up the premise for the show, as we see Ritsu desperately attempt to put together the light music club she's always dreamed of. Even in the first shot of these two we are already see the difference in their demeanor, with Ritsu excitedly running while Mio walks at a measured tempo. Through this interaction we also see Ritsu and Mio's first moments of characterization, showing that Ritsu is headstrong, theatrical, and determined, but somewhat unattentive to the emotions of others, while Mio is much more reserved, adverse to challenge, though not much less stubborn (as evidenced by her resistance to joining the club), even though Ritsu ultimately manages to guilt her into joining.

We are then introduced to Mugi, who accidentally walks into the room but ends up offering to join the club anyways. This shows that she is a rather compliant person, willing to give in to the wishes of others, a feature that will be reinforced throughout the series.

And this is just the first 10 minutes of the episode. In this amount of time in Kekkai Sensen we had nothing more than a basic introduction to Hellsalem's Lot and MC's generic tragic backstory. In K-on we have the backbone and starting of four characters who will carry the rest of the series on their interactions.
