People have sex at universities. Anime with sex seems to all get classified as hentai.

People have sex in high school too, and in all other places where people over the age of ~15 gather.

Nathaniel James

Because university is where we go to realize that we're never going to make it as normal people. In high school, there's still hope, so watching an anime about high school adventures has a wish fulfillment quality while anime about university feels like picking at a fresh wound.

High school is a better time for storytelling. It's young people in close proximity coming of age.

University is just high school-lite.

Ayden Turner
Ayden Turner

Tatami Galaxy is set in university and was very well received.
Okabe is a college student in Steins Gate.
There is probably other examples.

A SOL about 20-something students aiming to a more mature audience would be cool.
It would be less boring than high school shenanigans, with 14 years old love stories.

Henry Lopez

It's just a crap middle ground of a story setting that excels in nothing.

I dunno, this is something I think about a lot.

The overwhelming majority of anime set in the current era/present/near future is always in a high school setting. Seeing it repeatedly really gives the sense that to the Japanese, life basically ends after high school.

Forget university -- I can think of a few series that are about that (though not many, and the first that comes to mind is OP's image) -- how about an anime about adulthood, period?

I mean, jesus, no wonder Japan is full of suicidal and hopeless people. Everyone seems to have such a rosy and nostalgic memory of their high school days.

Is the majority of the paying audience really teenagers? Because if so, I totally get why high school is the most common setting.

Nathaniel Martin
Nathaniel Martin

Japanese people say having classes on a Saturday during HS is no big deal since you only have half a day of classes on that day
mfw I had no classes on Saturday and still like two afternoons with no classes per week
No wonder they hate life. I was in 2-3 extracurricular activities back then and my schedule still wasn't as busy as your average jap.

Gavin Torres
Gavin Torres

School as a setting is much more interesting than university. There's a lot of social acitivity in school and people usually get to know their classmates well. Lots of different subjects from art to physical education, and events such as school festivals. It's easy to write anime/manga/vn that revolves around school life.

Also, everyone went to school and were teenagers at one point, which makes it easy to relate to a high school kid.

Grayson Myers
Grayson Myers

What the fuck would it be about? University has way less of the drama, activities and stupidity of HS.
And for good reason, fuck all that shit.

Nathan Cooper
Nathan Cooper

because the audience are shit neets that doesn't go to the college so they don't want a series about people being sucessfull in the college.
also the +20 characters in an anime doesn't go to the college or study at all.

Why are there literally no anime set in graduate school? I want to be an anime.

Asher Green

Because in Japan (and arguably everywhere else) your life ends when you graduate from high school. You just kinda fizz for a short time, during which you may or may not attend university and then you finally give in to the grey inanity which is what human life really turns out to be.

Michael Young

Well the one thing i dont think Sup Forums know is that college in japan is atcually much breezier compare to the west. The amount of time you gave up in high school is replenish in uni here. Prof dont even give a rat shit about grades as long as you pass. Unless you major in some hardcore stuffs like medical and maybe engineer then it should make sense that you have to work harder. Still thou, after 1-3 years in uni you have to deal with job hunting season. So that is something they have to work on

Which I'm honestly more than fine with.
Those people you knew who ended up getting a girl pregnant in HS, only to end up with no time to themselves with fuck all money as they need to support their spawn
It literally got me out of my depression as a neet when I saw how much worse I could have turned out. I still have a chance, not those guys.

In Japan, life ends after highschool.

Bentley Long

Most actors are in their 20s or older, and it's cheaper to film in an apartment set or on the street than to make up a whole high school.

There are other reasons, but part of the reason there are so many stories about teenagers in anime is that it's a lot easier to draw teenagers in school than it is to film them.

Lucas Rodriguez
Lucas Rodriguez

In Japan
It's pretty much everywhere. Unless your parents are rich as fuck you're still going to work a shitty job to earn money. You can probably own your own house if you started saving at 18. Then you need a car, insurance, petrol, mot's, to pay rent unless you have taken out a loan for a house, then interest rates, food, bills, etc.
That or live of wellfare and have fuckall money anyway.

This is the condition in california. Those who dont have enough support are stuck at the bottom. Studying is already time consuming, but adding jobs and intern at the same time makes life shadier.

Not really, at least no anymore...

That's also one of the main reasons of declining birth rates.

Noah Parker

Fuck watchin all these happy HS shenanigans with cute girls is really harsh for my heart these days. My school days were far from perfect but it was the last time in my life when I was truly happy
If I knew adulthood gonna suck this much I wouldn't even bother with studying and just blast my brains out right after graduation
used to be happy-go-lucky "everything will be daijobu" guy in HS
now depressed and nihilistic to the core
fuck

Oliver Hernandez
Oliver Hernandez

Well it's sort of true everywhere else, but in Japan it's worse. The salaryman life in Japan is a living hell of 70 hour work weeks and unpaid overtime.

All the complaints you have about the situation in the west are turned up in Japan. It's why there are so many people who dropped out and become NEETs- you have to fight tooth and nail for the privilege of working 70 hours a week.

James Reed
James Reed

I want to know too!

Dylan Rogers
Dylan Rogers

Those kids who travel are usually the one who blew their all of their financial aid too.
Really?
Because the ones who travel were already upper middle class in my experience. Other people got into debt, but that was jsut from uni, they couldnt afford gap year bullshit too.

I also assume Cali is polarized, on one hand you have mexicans. On the other hand you have rich SJW types who have never lacked money. Atleast thats what I have gathered it's like.

James Jackson
James Jackson

Oh fuck off. Seinen is aimed at adults, both in theory and in practice.
Children aren't staying up until 2am every night and spending hundreds of dollars on BDs and ecchi merchandise.
Anime is looked down upon in certain circles and stigmatized as childish, but nowhere near to the same extent as in the West. And manga has virtually no stigma.
Many Japanese adults watch anime, everyone knows they watch anime, and the series are written with them in mind.

Chase Hernandez
Chase Hernandez

Actually non shounen/mecha anime is aimed at young adults, who have jobs and can actually pay for all the overpriced crap they want to sell them.

Also you do not outgrow anime unless you just watch those same shounen/mecha shows.

We are here forever.

Now this is why I dont understand Japanese people. Salarman lifestyle is shit, so why not pick a different job or move to the countryside and try to live on your own? You can own guns in Japan, the country has lots of space and iot's probably cheaper than city life. I mean they even have boar and deer to shoot, it seems like a no brainer.

qt girls hunting
You can get to eat quality meat regularly
Enjoy nature
Try to brew your own sake and beer
Ultimately this leads to
You can come back from hunting with your qt wife, have an amazingly fresh steak for dinner, and cuddle under the kotatsu with some sake on a cold winter day
But no, they all become salarymen instead. Apparently being underpaid, overworked and living in a cramped apartment is the Japanese version of the American dream.

Mind that I'm speaking for myself over here, but I think that most people in HS still lack direction in life. Since salaryman is your default route you might as well roll with it until you'll figure something out
Or so they think
Then you get your own house, car, family, shitton of loans and suddenly you find yourself trapped in shit you've never truly wanted
That's my interpretation of phenomenon anyway

Carson Cox
Carson Cox

Fuck no. I love being in uni. I love the freedom to actually be able to shoot the breeze with upperclassmen on the quad and not have to worry about shit like the bell all the time. And in college I don't have to put up with the bullying shit, because if I don't want to see your face ever again, there's more than enough space on campus to make sure of it. The work is harder, yeah, but there are no stupid busywork assignments anymore. You actually have a modicum of freedom to think instead of parrot. And you get sweet access to all sorts of journals for free.

It kinda is honestly, over there you get a meager amount of vacation days per year and you're looked down on if you actually take them. And if you complain about being overworked for shitty pay then you're not considered a real man. And yet they Japanese office workers still manage to be some of the least productive people on this planet.

Parker Reyes
Parker Reyes

Nope, but it sounds interesting. But I'm currently reading something so it will have to wait.

But why? Why would anyone choose that life over a rural one with more freedom and less stress?
You arent considered a real man
Oh no, a submissive beta is a suit will say mean things if you dont sacrifice your entire life for his shitty company, how shall anyone go on?

How can Japs live like this? I knwo they are collectivist, but fucking hell. Arent the atheist/non-religious too? So they know damn well they have one life, and thats how they spend it.

Thomas Butler
Thomas Butler

Target audience and tastes aside I can kinda see why most anime is set in high school - there's a comforting structure that makes setting events and the portrayal of relationships easier. You're basically with the same people day in and day out. Networks are more nebulous in university. I made it through seven years of university with hardly enough "friends" to count on one hand. Whereas in high school it was much easier to fall into a group of fellow normies/losers/what have yous.

God, I fucking hated college.
