Sopranos had good scenes. Shame anime hasn't evolved to that level of maturity yet. I suppose often the nukes are blamed. But Japan had tentacle porn long before

For a single scene the most important things for me are shot composition(cinematography) and music.
I doubt anything will ever dethrone the train ride from Spirited Away as my favorite scene from an anime.

Except this is clearly a discussion thread, because OP asks specifically for reasons why people find certain scenes are memorable.
Rec thread means a thread in which people are specifically asking for anime to watch, not any thread that discusses good things.

Music is definitely a huge part. All of the scenes that made me tear up wouldn't have done so if it weren't for the music.

Good build up with good characters, or if it's an action or moral that I really admire such as being a good father or standing up and being a man.

10/10 scenes or episodes:
K-On!! Episode 20, and several other episodes
Natsume Yuujinchou, the bully ghost.
Lucky Star, Konata's mom
Diebuster finale
Last episode of YZQ Tsuki OVAs
Kotestsujin Jeeg, double jeegs
The confession in Overman King Gainer
Kissu in Haruhi

Emotional impact?

Grayson Myers
Grayson Myers

As nice as it looks, it kinda misses the entire point. That describes the whole anime adaptation. OPM was meant to be a satire of the whole over-the-top superhero genre. By turning into just an over-the-top superhero show, it kinda defeats the whole point.

Jaxson Jackson

Usually a 10/10 scene for me has some sort of impact, make the viewer angry, sad, happy, whatever and couple it with a great soundtrack. But everything has to be tied together in a good way, realizations shown and maybe a memory or two depending on what happened. These kinda things are usually at the end of a movie or something though.

10/10 scenes

sound design can make a scene 10/10. no matter its significance or shot composition, if the sound design isn't on par it can never reach 10/10 status.

Another thing that can set up a great scene is everything leading up to the big deal.

Buildup, music, and visual impact. It can be one, two, or all three together. For example, in Sakamichi no Apollon, the scene at the rooftop in episode 10 with the electric guitar music was very memorable for me simply because of the music and buildup, the visuals weren't anything special. On the other hand, pretty much every episode of Uchouten Kazoku has a memorable scene because of its visuals. The whole few last episodes were also memorable because of the buildup.

As you mentioned, the change in art when the close-up happens, the sudden break after a second of silence in a scene where it appeared that Edward had just let go, and the moment the door opens the ending starts playing with such a relaxing tone for a dramatic entrance

Honestly, while I wanted a happy ending for them all, my reaction was: "What a fucking cop-out." Get all the soap opera drama, then magically fix everything, completely killing any meaning of every scene before it.

I think lack of music is as important, especially for scenes like Yang's death and the moment when Joe/Kamina die.

Leo Russell
Leo Russell

magically fix everything, completely killing any meaning of every scene before it.
If you actually understood the themes of the story and paid attention to the setting exposition, you'd realize that actually ending everything in tragedy is what would have killed the meaning of every scene before it.

Ian Hughes
Ian Hughes

No, I noticed that theme. The multiple monologues about the town were clear enough. But see, there's my complaint with the series in general. Why did it have to be perfectly happy or completely crushing tragedy? My first time through after Ushio's field scene, I thought that was a perfect track for ending the story. The city still becomes a place he can love, even if Nagisa's not there. I thought it was nice that he didn't "need" Nagisa anymore, and had created his own happiness in the town he hated. Someone wasn't saving him anymore. He was growing as a person. I would've ended it on that note.

But no, it's either Ushio dies and everyone cries, or everything's perfect and nothing will ever go wrong! Ever heard of a bittersweet ending?

Levi Baker
Levi Baker

The impact of everything that had led to this point, everything at stake, and the emotional impact of his friend being brutally murdered. for a gag shonen this was really intense and amazingly well done in the anime.

Wyatt Morgan
Wyatt Morgan

Sometimes no music is just as good for emotional scenes but I agree, music is super important rivalled only by shot composition. I don't care how good a scene is in other factors if just looking at it is boring or difficult.

Anthony Turner

Bentley Kelly
Bentley Kelly

But no, it's either Ushio dies and everyone cries, or everything's perfect and nothing will ever go wrong! Ever heard of a bittersweet ending?
Oh, I'm not saying a bittersweet ending would've been bad, I'd actually prefer it as well. The problem is that making it so would make the both the orbs of light and the other world meaningless in the context of the story. To change the story, you'd have either needed to use them to magically cure Ushio at the end or remove them in their entirety, with the former being an extremely underwhelming execution of the established plot elements and foreshadowing and the latter damaging the story as a whole due due to how it would change the setting and central themes. At that point, you'd be better off just rewriting Clannad in its entirety from the very beginning.

Thomas Carter
Thomas Carter

that doesn't make the original scene any less good
two dudes in a standoff in the middle of nowhere isn't "important" or impressive to the rest of the world, yet it is glorified in literature of all cultures. basically what i mean is; relative significance is what matters in a story, not universal

For me, the entire FMA:B OP1 is what makes the show.
The whole OP reminds the viewers of the past that the brothers have gone through and why they're on their journey. This way, I get to feel the motivation that put the Elric brothers on the road in the first place each and every episode (of the first cour anyway).
Coupled with great animation and even better music, it's the #1 OPOAT.
