Friendly Reminder

How to tell if something is a shitpost:
calls the community made guide/whatever method a piece of shit with no reasoning given why
insults someone giving helpful advice with no reasoning given why
attempts to create arguments over virtually nothing (eg opinions without facts)
"spam questions" that are easily answered via a 1 second glance at the guide
uses obtuse Japanese fragments interspersed with English to attempt bypass people trying to filter the shitposts
any mention of anime being shit, or "real Japanese"
spells the word as romaji

You have a hole in your head if you're finding somewhere for 20% of the cards you're looking at to disappear to. Mature cards are cards you've seen enough times they should be ingrained in your memory. If you aren't getting damn near a hundred percent on those then you should abandon all dreams of learning Japanese or better, just kill yourself.
Or more seriously study kanji or something, 80% actually is pretty low.

How are japanese people so bad at rapping

I've thought about this so much, I think it's just because culturally they're still stuck in the era of like early rap where it was all about just talking and there was a lot less focus on flow

Could also just be because syllabary's are a bitch

So I've been learning grammar for a bit (yeah I know, beginner stuff, sorry) and the past negative tense of words seem to always end in なかった. That's not particularly a problem for learning, but I feel like I've never actually seen or heard this form through any media I've consumed in the past. Is it simply because I never knew of it or because that form just isn't used? It just sounds so clunky to say out loud as well (likely because I feel like I've never heard it).

you have no organization, for something 1542 times iterated upon , you sure have jack shit to show for it

like, motherfucker, you could have started a company and monetized it and streamlined it and even got your own apps made specifically for this scenario
instead, youre sitting here just spamming the same shitty guide with minimal effort and shit advice/shit banter between the same 4-5 samefags shitting up the place

There's a good chance you can read Yotsubato if you pick a little bit of grammar and vocab up on the side.

Good stuff man.

How far into Axanael are you?

Do the nhk easy articles provide an insight into the daily news/happenings in Japan like a fully fledged article or are they more non-topical stuff? I think I read somewhere that it is made for native children.

I started mining when I started Satsukoi, before that I completed the Nayr's 5k deck. Satsukoi took me 4 months to complete, I mined about 2400 words/phrases, but by the end I'd only gone through about 1200, so I still have a big backlog.

By the end I was reading faster because I learned a lot of the vocab that the author liked to use. Sex scenes were definitely faster by the end because I learned a bunch of anatomy vocab. I don't feel like my grammar improved much, but I'm going through the DOJG deck now so hopefully it gets better.

Go to your browser's add-ons page/window, open the preferences for Rikaisama, then click the "Clipboard & Save" tab.

There will be a field labelled "Saved audio". You need to point this to Anki's collections.media folder if you want audio to work.

Now go to the Anki tab. There are two important fields here: "Save format" and "Field names". In the "Save format" field, you need to tell Rikaisama what information you want it to save. Here is an example:
$d$t$r$t$n$t[sound:$a]
The above tells Rikaisama to save the dictionary form of the word you've hovered over (this means conjugations will be stripped from it, so 食べます would be saved as 食べる), the reading (hiragana characters showing pronunciation of the word), the English definition of the word, and the audio clip (if one is available).

Now for the "Field names" field. You enter into here the names of the fields in your Anki deck separated by spaces like so:
Vocab Reading Definition Audio
You need to make sure these fields exist in your Anki deck.

Two more things.
1. You must install the Rikaisama add-on for Anki.
2. You must have open the deck that you want to save the word to (see pic)

Pretty much. There's some words I've done wrong 10+ times (I counted). A lot of the time I either know how it's pronounced but not what it means, or more commonly I know what it means but not how it's pronounced.

It is very little but right now learning 20 new words a day takes me like 2 hours, and I really can't afford to spend 3+ hours a day on Japanese outside of weekends

Isaac Jones
Isaac Jones

It is very little but right now learning 20 new words a day takes me like 2 hours

Christian Taylor

安 itself carries a "relaxation" nuance, 安い is a new word (adjective) made from 安. The kanji that words are made of can have different degrees of similarity to the word's meaning, but generally it's best not to look for connections using the English language and just try to get a feel for them.

Since you only just started don't worry too much about retention. Keep faithfully pressing "again" when you don't remember a word until you do and you'll eventually pick up. Just don't pass a word on just because you kinda or almost remembered it or your retention will remain trash.

Ethan Davis
Ethan Davis

I would read up a little bit on how memory works if you haven't already, it might clear up some things:

Make sure your anki is set up properly, re-read through the anki guide (esp the part where you raise daily reviews to 9999 so none are being pushed back)

If all of the above doesn't help, perhaps try timeboxing / focusing techniques while studying? Pomodoro technique helped me a lot to not get burnt out.

Or simply just don't sweat it dude, maybe you'll climb the hill a little slower than someone else, in the end you'll reach the same destination.

Cameron Nguyen
Cameron Nguyen

You don't necessarily have to do it. And doing RTK is a half-year investment.

I'll check out those links shortly, thanks. My anki is set up properly, but thanks for the reminder. I'll read a big about these "timeboxing" and "pomodoro technique" things as well, thanks for bringing that up.

I'll look into radicals, thanks. Just straight up learning vocab and skipping kanji would be faster than first learning kanji and then vocab, right? I'm not really interested in hand-writing Japanese, so I don't need to know kanji for that.

I've seen a little over 600 hours of anime IIRC. Perhaps not a lot by Sup Forums standards, but it should be enough, right?

James Cook

Not that guy, but that hits pretty close to home. I've been studying for about 8 years now, but partially because of university exams and also because of laziness and other things, I kept taking 4-8 months of breaks all the time. Kind of like a month of studying, 6 months of break.
Look at those spikes. LOOK AT THEM. And then notice that the x axis goes back to 90 months.
The biggest spike you see was when returning after 8 months and I had to chew through 3400 reviews due. Fun times.

I also restarted a few times. I've done the Let's Learn Japanese Basic video course, quit, done Genki 1-2, quit, done Tae Kim, and so on. Even did RTK first volume fully. And now I'm doing DOJG, I'm just about done with the intermediate book. My vocab mining deck also just hit 10.000 words.

Anyway, my progress is definitely higher than that guy's. My reading speed is fairly good, when reading VNs I almost always read faster than the voice playback. Finally, after so many years I got to the point where it's very hard not to become slowly better at the language, because I can read at a fair speed and have fun. I can read moege easily without a dictionary, and average difficulty scenario games with text hooking some of the more rare words. It took a long time, but I guess I'm finally there. And it was worth every second.

There's really no reason to be anti-romaji. You would wind up rejecting some incredibly nuanced dissections of the language (e.g. DoBJG) if you were.

2 primary anti romaji groups:
1. turbo weaboo hipsters who are obsessed with being the most hardcore Japanese they can be, circlejerking daily about knowing the 万葉仮名 while flaming anyone who posts using romaji
2. beginners who think anyone who types a word in romaji must obviously be even more of a beginner

It's like that on purpose so all the shitters who don't bother to do radical / kanji study can learn them via vocab.

If you introduce multiple words using the same kanji, no shit some people are going to get confused. It's supposed to work itself out in the long term, but sounds like hell in the short term. Then again, if you don't bother to do any kanji study you chose that hell anyways, so suck it up princess.

Ironically, using mnemonics / hand writing to distinguish between the words / kanji used actually helps to clear up the confusion. You might be good at making those up had you done kanji study...

Ryder Hill
Ryder Hill

so all the shitters who don't bother to do radical/kanji study can learn them via vocab

I disagree. While meaning could be slightly different, knowing the readings helps. Jisha, jijitsu, jitsugen etc. mean different things but being able to actually read them makes recalling easier.

Noah Martinez
Noah Martinez

You're half right. Yes, the deck was originally ordered by rough newspaper frequency.

The one that poster is referring to has been specifically reordered, however, to "gradually ease you into kanji" learning. I believe it's nukemarine's ordering? It basically means that you learn the various readings of the kanji via brute force repetition - repeated exposure to the exact same kanji in multiple words IN A ROW.

David Ward
David Ward

If you get a group of incredibly similar vocab thrown at you in a small space of time it makes it much harder to differentiate between them, they all get mixed up in your head much more easily, this is also why everyone always bitches at shit like 上 and 開 verbs, because core just throws them all at you one after the other

Hell even when I get two similar words come up by accident in my mining deck it completely fucks with my ability to differentiate the two, and I suffer from it by having problems with them for much longer than I usually would

Brayden Evans

For some people, it has the (temporary) opposite effect: the words sound extremely similar and become confused.

Like if the words "escalator" or "elevator" were foreign to you, keeping them straight in your head when initially learning them could get pretty frustrating.

This effect is even mentioned on the "Twenty rules of formulating knowledge", written by a guy who programmed an SRS program by himself:
Combat interference
When you learn about similar things you often confuse them. For example, you may have problems distinguishing between the meanings of the words historic and historical... If knowledge of one item makes it harder to remember another item, we have a case of memory interference. You can often remember an item for years with straight excellent grades until ... you memorize another item that makes it nearly impossible to remember either!
In simple terms: you will get confused about what is what.
Interference is probably the single greatest cause of forgetting in collections of an experienced user of SuperMemo (the SRS said author wrote). You can never be sure when it strikes, and the only hermetic procedure against it is to detect and eliminate. In other words, in many cases it may be impossible to predict interference at the moment of formulating knowledge.

https://www.supermemo.com/en/articles/20rules

All that trouble for the sake of not "wasting time" on learning some radicals.

Benjamin Butler
Benjamin Butler

In your first example you say "I am busy and I am at the office". In your second example you say "I am at the busy office"

If the entire deck is based around that format (throwing similar words at you in quick succession), it's inevitable that that confusion will happen to people using it.

It's just how memory works in general, maybe it affects some people more OFTEN than others, but it's going to happen regardless.

Hello Osaka

Julian Carter
Julian Carter

i + 1 is sound, and not the problem, however?

In this case, it is greater than i + 1 in the beginning anyways. You must learn the additional kanji (in most cases) AND their reading, AND the actual meaning of the word on top of that. Perhaps for verbs it works, but certainly not for 2 kanji compounds.

Once you're ~1000 kanji in, it might switch to i + 1, but by that time, you have a bunch of interference due to similar sounding, sometimes similar in meaning words. i + 1 only works if you actually understand the i part. If you're mixing it up with h and j, then you're going to have a hard time.

Andrew Campbell
Andrew Campbell

i+1 is sound, yes. The problem is that these decks aren't i+1. i+1 isn't a method, it's the result of comprehensible input.
