Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Joseph Adams
Joseph Adams

Is this show Anime of the Decade thus far? Just finished it, and literally wept with happiness at the tag announcing a second season. A period piece with a tragic storyline, starring fully-realized adult characters, and featuring meaningful direction and generational themes -- I'm amazed that a show like this could be renewed at what will certainly be a financial loss for Deen.

Seriously, what other contenders for best anime of the 2010s are there? Mushishi Zoku Shou probably comes the closest. Shin Sekai Yori is definitely a candidate, but I think it lacks the human element that elevates the greatest fiction. Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong are both great, but Yuasa's tendency to hold the viewer at arm's length hurts their case. Series like Madoka or Steins;Gate are considered modern classics, but they strike me as pop cultural landmarks more than artistic ones.

Rakugo just seems like the clear frontrunner thus far. Has there been any news about when the second season will premiere? I can't fucking wait.

Good advice, I guess. Even if the second season doesn't live up to the first, though, I'll be grateful that it exists -- because it means that there's still hope that stories like this will continue to be produced in animated form.

If he meant 2006-2016 I'd agree with you but if we're starting from 2010 it's harmless enough. He's trying to have a sincere thread on Sup Forums and it isn't that bad, leave the poor guy alone.

Most of my backlog at the moment is pre-2010, so that wouldn't change my opinion. Only time and any great new series between now and 2019 will do that.

It's not surprising that you'd favor those two series, since they (like Rakugo) place heavy emphasis on familial themes. Uchouten Kazoku even deals directly with the idea of the son succeeding the father.

Carson Parker
Carson Parker

You're the retard here, user. I don't think Rakugo is AOTD but it's a respectable choice. It's not like he's trying to argue that a a mediocre or good anime is AOTD, Rakugo is great and one of the best anime of the decade, it deserves to be a candidate.

I certainly agree that it's too soon to say Rakugo is the best series of the last ten years, but I'm wondering what came out between 2006-2009 that would unseat it.

For me, Seirei no Moribito and Cross Game are the two biggest gems of the mid-late 2000s, and not much else comes close. Haven't seen stuff like Dennou Coil or Mononoke yet, though.

Same. I was scratching my head by the end of it, and not just out of confusion, but out of disinterest, as well. Beautiful art, though.

Oh, I don't really have anything to add to that conversation. His visual style and non-linear storytelling approach are the two things that most people complain about. That doesn't mean they're right, but I love Yuasa and I still find those aspects of his work distracting or instrusive from time to time.

Dennou Coil is hit or miss with people, the pace is hard to deal with if you aren't into the series. I highly recommend you add Mononoke to your backlog if you haven't already though.

To be honest, I don't like the idea of picking a single show to put on a pedestal representing a full decade. It's too much subjective taste at that point, it's not often that anime has a medium-defining work that people can agree advanced/perfected the medium.

Brayden White

Dennou Coil has great episodic episodes, but the actual plot episodes take a nose dive in comparison. Mononoke is a bit odd in that the best episodes of Mononoke aren't even in Mononoke, but in Ayakashi instead, Doesn't stop it from being great, but I liked Rakugo more.

I have come on terms to say that this anime is the best anime aired so far in 2016. Yes, I am putting this ahead of Boku dake ga Inai Machi. Yet, some viewers can tend to judge an anime by it's rating by a certain majority category, and they do not take into the account of actual reviews. In the 21st century, anime premise has always been about how much sales it can ultimately produce for one's production company, resulting in many aspects of mainstream genres . However, rarely do we come across an anime that can put together a combination of a what might seem like an uninteresting plot-line turned into an actually fabulous and captivating story about two people's lives in the past.

Rakugo?
Can you believe it? Who's heard of Rakugo? Yet, the first anime that actually puts together a beautiful storyline relating to Rakugo with a tad bit of slice of life. I was captivated by episode 3. It was amazing how this hidden gem could make me binge watch an anime that I now find comparable with many of the top animes of MAL scoring over high 8's.

I actually started Hyouge Mono thinking it was going to be my favorite anime of all time. Great characters, methodical pacing, and a sense that everything that happened on screen was contributing to a larger story. But when the subs changed from Huzzah to Doremi, I lost the passion I had for it. It sounds stupid, but the suddenly the show didn't have the same weight anymore. It was a really dialogue-heavy series, which is probably why I felt that way. Still a great show.

Also, I think you mean Samurai Flamwenco.

It's a small sample size, but based on a couple of your comments, your English seems very good. If you're willing to share, what language subs did you use for Tatami Galaxy? As dense as the dialogue is in that show, I can't imagine the difficulty you must have had following it if they were English subs. I'm a native speaker and I still did a lot of rewinding to get the whole picture.

Shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu has the best character development I have honestly really seen in an anime. For me you know a show is good when you see yourself there with the character, either laughing, crying, being angry, etc with them. Watching SGRS I found myself drawn not only to the main characters but the supporting characters as well. Another thing as well is this show has quite a few veteran VAs playing the characters which is amazing! Two of the VAs played in Cowboy Bebop so you knows it's already awesome

Since you're a manga reader, I have a question. Did the anime version of Rakugo downplay any homoeroticism that may have existed in the manga? I got whiffs of it here and there while watching, but it seemed to be incidental as opposed to purposeful. Looking at that scan, I wonder if the adaptation wasn't completely faithful.

Camden Taylor

That scan is from one of her other manga.
Rakugo isn't translated so I've not read it but it's josei and runs in a josei magazine, the hints of homo are just that in the manga, hints, as far as I know.
The main reason for this is probably that all her other manga are flat out BL series from BL magazines, like Itoshi no Nekkoke, the one I'm posting which is actually getting scanlated. She's a BL author, so she slipped some stuff into rakugo I guess. I do feel that Bon had some attraction to Sukeroku, even if he himself didn't quite know what it was.

Yeah, I got that the scan was from another one of her works. I figured that if her other stuff was that gay, Rakugo might have been neutered a little bit. It's nice to hear that the adaptation kept what was in the manga, as opposed to exaggerating or diminishing that aspect of the work.

I agree that Bon was attracted to Sukeroku on some level. It made their relationship (and the love triangle involving Miyokichi) that much more interesting to watch.

I've actually got that on my backlog, believe it or not, and I have high hopes for it.

I'm a lot better at writing/reading in Spanish (my second language, if it can even be called that) than I am at speaking, as well.

You watched Tatami Galaxy raw, then? I'm envious. I think I might hold it in much higher esteem if I didn't have to juggle the tasks of reading the subs and taking in the art.

I'm surprised it took so long for a comment like this to pop up. Yeah, the language in the OP is a little pretentious. So what? When you're giving serious thought to naming the best of some field, you have to be a little analytical.

Rakugo's dramatic style is only "basic" in that it deals with universal themes like death, love, family, responsibility, etc. In terms of execution, though, it's anything but basic.

As for it having a "ridiculous theatrical climax," think about what you just said. It's a show about theater performers -- of course it's going to be theatrical. Whether it's ridiculous or not depends on whether the show effectively draws you in.

I'm stealing that reaction image, by the way.

I'm having trouble understanding this. It was an entertaining series but "cultural landmark" seems excessive. A cultural landmark would be something like Gundam or Cutey Honey, something whose influence is felt decades later. I will give you Madoka (derivative as it is) as it did inspire some imitators but I can't see how Steins;Gate is a landmark.

Konatsu accuses Yakumo of having killed her father very early on. Also, Sukeroku seems to be haunting his old friend (both pre and post-flashback). The image in question isn't the only thing pointing towards Sukeruko's death having played out differently than we're lead to believe.
