Shows the kind of people we have posting here that DISLIKING the S;G anime is considered bait. It's a piece of shit anime compared to the VN, deal with it. You have no reason not to have read it instead of watching it unless you're just a lazy asshole. It's been in English for years.

Cameron Taylor

That's why it's good. It plays with shonen tropes by applying them to cooking, and does a great job of it. The anime also adds a lot of flair and a god-tier soundtrack.

You didnt think the last three episodes were garbage?
1 The big finale was trash
2 They squeezed Airi out to just haphazardly toss her back in last second
3 They kept the cuck in despite not setting up for Airi end like they should have if they were going to keep it
Not to mention a million other things they fucked up, but ya thats the reason it's all but forgot amongst the seasonal winds. They could have had something truly great if they had just stuck the landing.

Okay, so you're using one of the worst possible example of a 'sports' anime and assuming it represents all of them? I see now where the misconception comes from. Watch something like Ace of Diamond - that's what a real sports anime looks like. And most of them are closer to that than Kuroko, which is some sort of magic superpower battle anime masquerading as basketball.

Hibike was actually really good, if you enjoy a strongly character-driven show. The main reason people aren't gonna like it is because of the skimpy plot. I don't mind a skimpy plot if the characters are strong and it's well executed, so I enjoyed Hibike. People (who aren't yurishitters) like Hibike because:

1. The characters are very strong. They're either very novel in their composition like Hazuki, Natsuki, and Asuna, or they have very strong arcs like Kumiko and ribbons-chan.
2. The direction is some of the best in anime history. The subject matter is not super eye-catching, but the shot choice, composition, visual storytelling, visual metaphor, and editing were immaculate.

good animation
Doesn't even enter into it.

Those are the reasons people like Hibike. You can either accept that fact or stick your head in the sand. There are also perfectly valid reasons to not like Hibike.

For example, I watch pleiades. It had a very strong main plot. That's something that I don't really care about. The characters were not super interesting. They were mostly flat. That's something I care about much more. My priorities are:

1. Characters
2. Direction
3. Plot
4. Theme

The order of my priorities is completely up to my own personal taste. Yours is obviously different. This will obviously affect which shows we respectively enjoy.

It's no different from any other choices in this thread for that year

Did you just... say Blood+ is no different from Mushishi? I don't know what to say to that.

I believe Blood+ failed as an action series. Lots of action doesn't matter if it's never very good. It's mainly just Haji standing around with a coffin and getting his ass kicked. Saya doesn't start doing shit until the point where she needs to STOP doing shit because the Schiff aren't even bad and yet she's super angry at them because Diva got her real butthurt.

Camden Reyes
Camden Reyes

Not that guy, but like everything in Cowboy Bebop, they're carried by fantastic direction. Cowboy Bebop is an entirely style over substance anime. All the characters are pretty straightforward, but it's the all the small things that accumulate throughout the episodes which make them feel human.

Nolan Carter
Nolan Carter

You should figure out why you like / dislike certain things. Not so that you can argue with me about it or whatever, but in order to get to know your own taste. If you understand why you like something from a critical standpoint then it opens up a world of personal discourse about the scope of your own taste. You can search out more things which fit within your taste, or experiment with things which run counter to your taste. If you're going to be watching all this anime, you should at least get a little introspective about it. An unexamined life is not worth living.

Jack Hughes
Jack Hughes

Also fair, but that's why I prefer Outlaw Star. It trades a bit of that style for actually having some real substance.

Hunter Rodriguez
Hunter Rodriguez

I dunno how true that is. Faye Valentine is a pretty fucking interesting character. Con artist, gambler, amnesiac, basically time traveler. I'd certainly agree that Bebop is mostly about style, but it's also not at all without substance. Every episode is an incredibly tightly packaged story. It doesn't have much of a larger plot, sure, but that doesn't mean it's without substance. Almost every episode is a meticulously crafted plot, beautifully executed.

Theme is substance.

Alexander Parker
Alexander Parker

I was assuming you were talking about Mushishi, I can't give a judgement on it but all I know is that everytime I tried to watch it while it was airing on tv I couldn't help but fall sleep. It's backlogged next with Haruhi, where sometime in the future I will finally watch it.

It seems I don't have as good memory as you, so I couldn't give a serious discussion about Blood+. I just can say that I enjoyed it and I just couldn't stop watching it.

Nolan Howard
Nolan Howard

Why? It's no different from any other choices in this thread for that year
I checked every single response in this thread just to see if you had some sort of point, and it's actually extremely different from basically everything else mentioned. Aside from obvious trolls, the only action anime anyone else nominated are two people who said E7.

Nathaniel Sanders
Nathaniel Sanders

Cowboy Bebop is actually at its worst when it's trying for a larger plot. The individual episodes themselves are its strength, but there's a lot of people who dislike that type of storytelling. I would say it is an exaggeration to suggest nearly every episode is full of "substance" though, because I feel like a fair amount of them would feel flat without the amazing direction to back it up. It's not like that even matters, because the reality is that Cowboy Bebop had both tightly plotted episodes and well directed episodes. If that makes substance, then so be it.

Jacob Rivera
Jacob Rivera

I feel like a fair amount of them would feel flat without the amazing direction to back it up
Well, anything would feel flat without strong direction. But you're right that for example the blaxploitation episode probably doesn't have too much going on in terms of narrative. It's a really simple episode that showcases some interesting scenarios and a ton of direction.

Other than that I think I agree with everything you've said here. The one point I feel compelled to make is that I still don't think I would want to give up the larger plot that's in it. Because of that plot we get the final confrontation between Spike and Faye where he talks about his fake eye, and that's enough to justify it all as far as I'm concerned.

Nicholas Evans
Nicholas Evans

That's all quite fair, it's true that some people just enjoy different types of shows. Maybe Blood+ wasn't my thing and Mushishi isn't yours. I just felt like B+ had way too much time and didn't put it to particularly interesting use, but it was a long time ago for me. With Mushishi, if you don't like something slow paced without much action, then yeah, it makes sense you wouldn't like it.

I do think you would probably like Haruhi a lot more than Mushishi based on what you've said, as long as you find the character interactions interesting. It's got a lot more excitement, and I do genuinely like it so I hope you do too.

Dylan Cox

I didn't exactly dislike it, but it was something I never really felt I wanted to watch, and it wasn't that entertaining either. It had some pretty good episodes, but many of them were just okay.

Mushishi is an anime I've been planning to watch for a while, but looks like there are no cute girls, and on pictures it looks like the MC is smoking. Uhm, it's just that I've never felt a need to watch it, so I've never started. I may end up liking, it's just that I never felt passion for starting watching it.

Also, I didn't consider sequels, if I did FMP: Second Raid would also be up for consideration for that year. I just ripped it out of a table for new anime by season that I've watched that I keep, where I don't include sequels

Between Noein and FMP:SR, I don't know, Noein is a more unique experience while FMP was just more of season 1 with less of what I liked, so maybe still Noein, really.

The video game part was my favourite! Or at least, it was just great to escape the baseball arc, which I didn't like so much. Overall, I liked Level E, except the horrible artstyle and OP and some parts that were less fun.

absolutely everything else that came out 2007, like Hidamari sketch, Kanon, Gurren lagann, Darker than black, Claymore, Bokurano, Dennou coil, Terra e, Baccano!, School days, Higurashi kai, Zetsubou sensei, Mononoke, Clannad, Ghost hound and Kaiji.

Even the weaker entries i mentioned and some tear jerker romance shows were a lot better than ef. But those aside, putting ef over Kaiji, Baccano, Dennou coil and Gurren lagann is just retarded.

Michael Smith

This is hard to explain when you've not seen the show (correct me on this if I'm wrong), but the show broke with most tropes and conventions. So there's this "I've never seen anything like it"-feel to it

I personally like the characters, but that's up for debate, as always. The MC is rather bland, but I really liked the boys.

One thing it's got in common with Game of Throne and LOGH is the lack of plot armor. I really hate it when a scene plays suspense music and I just sit there thinking "well, they're not gonna get hurt."
Most of the cast dies horrible deaths. Since you've not seen it, I'll try to not spoiler you, but the boat scene was magnificent in terms of suspense.

The problems and solutions were intriguing. The world gave you rules and told them to you in smart ways, making you think about their implications. Then it threw some curveballs at you, anomalies if you will, and you thought with the characters about how to possibly solve them. It's like restricted Janken with more war and terror.

The antagonist, for me, is up there with with the likes of Johann. While he's not as terrifying as the blonde charismatic Monster, he's also not a plot-made halfgod, but actually somewhat relatable and... human.

That's it, so far.
I mean, pretentious, if I understand it correctly, is when a show acts like it's all intelligent and plot-driven, while also thematically touching on morals and ethics, but to me, this show actually does all that in a very smart way.

Call me a faggot, but I actually enjoyed it.

Nathan Sanchez
Nathan Sanchez

Personally I was just completely floored by how well it was directed. I understand hating it, because it certainly does make use of some common tropes and cliches, but I like the way in which it plays with them. And in no way am I disrespecting the other quality shows that aired that year. For example, TTGL is still one of my favorite anime of all time. It's very close, but I put ef slightly above it and a few others because it is a really important show to me.

Parker Gray
Parker Gray

Game of Throne and LOGH is the

Nigga please, only secondary characters die. Out of all the main characters, only three have died. And two of them came back from the dead, so only one mc death.

Joseph Wright
Joseph Wright

Gonna try to not derail this, but what both shows managed to do was to instill fear in me. When someone's in danger, I feel the danger. I stop thinking "it will all turn out for the best". Instead, I start hoping for a good outcome and dreading the alternatives.

Yes, secondary characters die more than Protagonists and GRRM is riding a bit too much on the revive train lately, but I am for example, fucking scared when I think about Stannis' upcoming battle.

Few shows manage to take away my laid-back attitude (fuck you, Fairy Tail) and I think it deserves mentioning when I'm asked what I like about a show.

Christian Sanders

I made this list using only Anime that I still have saved on my plex server. Some years were hard to narrow down, some where hard to pick anything at all (like 2015).

2000: FLCL
2001: Angelic Layer
2002: RahXephon
2003: Planetes
2004: Gankutsuou / Monster
2005: Mushishi
2006: Black Lagoon
2007: Dennou Coil / Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
2008: Kaiba
2009: Bakemonogatari
2010: The Tatami Galaxy / Katanagatari
2011: Puella Magi Madoka / Ano Hana
2012: Sakamichi no Apollon
2013: Aku no Hana
2014: Ping Pong / Your Lie in April
2015: Hibike Euphonium

Jason Davis
Jason Davis

I watched a couple episodes of it back when it started, but that's about it. I just felt like it was being intentionally vague in a cheap, faux-artsy way, but I say this judging it on barely any of it. Maybe I'm the faggot, I think I was pretty annoyed at the time that it was getting so much positive attention just because it was a lot of people's first "different" anime and it made it hard for me to truly appreciate it. So I didn't watch more because I didn't want the show's fanbase to sour my opinion of it. I'm basically calling it pretentious without having actually tried to look for the substance. Honestly, the way you word it actually does make it sound pretty interesting, so I feel like I should give it a chance with a more open mind and try not to let outside opinions affect me too much. Though I almost wonder if I should just read the book instead, since I think it's translated... we'll see.

One thing I can say for it is that I immediately loved the ED. So I know it's got that, at least. At any rate, thanks for the informative post.

Nothing. That's the whole point. Nothing bad ever happens. Every arc has this awesome fistpumping buildup and then completely wastes it on letting the main cast stomp all and any opposition.

It's like watching a kid play a fantasy game on easy mode WITH CHEATS.

Yeah, ok, it's shonen, Pell didn't die to Crocodile's bomb either, but the big three somehow don't feel as bad as Fairy Tail in this regard.

2014: Gundam: Reconguista in G

Jaxson Russell

Oh, that's a shame. I'm pretty spoiled by HxH since there's a real sense of danger in that one. Can't look at any typical shonen the same way after that.

Dunno if you're up on it, but it's funny to think the manga right now has us speculating that one of the most popular characters in the series may actually die. And Togashi's enough of a madman to do it.

Nathaniel Walker
Nathaniel Walker

Ping Pong is probably a far better show than Your Lie in April, but the Latter had a very strong emotional impact on me while Ping Pong was mostly just "fun." It's incredibly well directed and visually stunning but it didn't have the same level of emotional weight to me. However, your mileage may vary.

Ano Hana

Never really got into HxH, because I wanted to watch the old show, somehow got bored after like seven episodes and never really tried it again. When the reboot came, I debated whether I should watch both, starting with the old one, or skip it and only watch the new one.

I have been too lazy to find an answer for myself yet...

As we are praising good shonen right now, I really liked the Magi Anime.

Jaxon Bennett
Jaxon Bennett

I didn't find G-Reco particularly convoluted. I think most anime watchers are used to a very straightforward style of storytelling that anyone who strays even remotely from the norm comes off as... abstruse, as you put it. But I've seen this writing style used in a fair amount of pretty well-regarded movies. Perhaps the fact that much of what Tomino was going for pertained to Japanese society blunted the western fanbase's appreciation of the show, but I thought it was quite cleverly written, with unique themes and unexpectedly realistic use of its characters. It also incorporated religion into the series without vilifying it or making the whole show about it, which is an extreme rarity.

Nicholas Barnes
Nicholas Barnes

Apollon was godlike for its first half. I didn't like it as much after it took a heavier dramatic shift.

Ano Hana is an unearned bawlfest

Cameron Rivera
Cameron Rivera

Yeah, I would not recommend bothering with the old show unless you've become so addicted to HxH that you are obsessed with experiencing everything about it. It's got a lot of filler, somehow manages to cut down one of the arcs immensely, and ends before adapting the greatest arc. All HxH 2011 really has for filler is a couple of skippable recap episodes really early on, which they then proceed to never do again.

And thanks for the recommendation, I'll try it sometime. I do find the setting to be pretty interesting.

Damn, I was gonna write out an argument in defense of the show but I can't convince this many people. I didn't realize its art style was so hated. I will say I do not think it looks like it was drawn by an epileptic five year old, just that it was intentionally ugly for good effect.

Yuasa's episode or the whole show? I'd recommend both, but obviously one episode is only 12 minutes so it's easier to recommend just that. Definitely watch it if you're a fan of Yuasa, it's goofy and fun.

As for the whole show, it started off as a perfect goofy ode to Saturday morning cartoons, but now it's morphed into something strange. It's probably the most diverse show on television, so naturally its quality is inconsistent. You'll probably never get bored watching it, but I can't guarantee you'll love it. Definitely better than any other cartoons though, and most anime.

It's pretty badass and the soundtrack is god-tier, but it relies heavily on budget saving techniques such as "hold object up in front of mouth right before you start talking" and an extensive flashback sequence where they keep showing the same footage.
