lost his entire life's work in an earthquake including drafts for stuff he wanted to do in the future
I'm surprised he didn't kill himself. Also, getting money from royalties and illustrations seems like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Is it true ? If so it's pretty fucked up.

The original manga has scenes that are exactly like his most recent porn work.

Dayum, I like his faces even more now. I didn't think this was possible.

Dominion Tank Police > Appleseed > Ghost in the shell

Camden Baker
Camden Baker

Appleseed is too pretentious, with a muddled plot and inconsistent art. Tank Police is meant to be comedy/slapstick, but misses the mark. GitS is overall his best work. It has all his best ideas and art, but also suffers from all the same negative traits seen in every title he has released. His biggest weakness is cluttered page layouts which are awkward to follow.

Orion > Ghost in the Shell > Dominion Tank Police > Appleseed

Carter Sanders

Don't even mention Orion. It was next level pretentious, and shirow's "clever" smashing together if religious ideas and mythology made no sense to anyone.

Aiden Lee
Aiden Lee

How was it pretentious?

Xavier Collins
Xavier Collins

In the sense that the artist/writer believes his work to be clever or profound, yet it fails to be either of those things. It's simply bad. And Shirow even says he is embarrassed when he looks back at it.

Why do people get so butthurt about anime which mix religious ideas to create a setting, Tolkien did it and no one ever called him pretentious for it.

Jayden White
Jayden White

Tolkien did it well and unintrusively so that the work didn't suffer from it.
Contrast with Narnia.

Dominic Morales

It's the execution. Tolkien's execution worked and he has become a household name. Shirow's execution failed, and as a result nobody bought his shitty comic (except me and a few others). I think it might have even sold better in the west than Japan because if the gits association.

As for Man Machine Interface, don't try telling me that was anything other than a steaming pile of shit.

Hunter Peterson
Hunter Peterson

Tolkien did it
Yeah, sure. But he also spent 50 years on Middle-Earth.

Lincoln Garcia
Lincoln Garcia

Orion is his best work, Man Machine Interface is one of his worst. Shirow was never good at execution, you can't enjoy his works unless you accept the fact that they're stories with attached dictionaries.

What the hell is this?

Why are they washing and putting underwear?

He eventually realised he's not talented at telling stories so decided to stick to drawing sexy ladies instead. Problem is, I only like his sexy ladies when they're operating mechs, otherwise there's nothing special about them.

Appleseed was quite good, actually. I consider it a second best Masamune's work after GitS, of course. Sadly, he dropped it.

Masamune also wrote original concepts for some anime series: Ghost Hound and Real Drive. Check it out, it's worth watching.

So he didn't do anything. Just recycling his old works and let somebody else making them look new.

This user speaks the truth.

I'm an artist, writer, programmer and a martial artist.

I have gigabytes of work I've spent my life developing including unpublished manuscripts, code snippets (though I really should start uploading that stuff), art and references, and training notes.

If my house burned down tomorrow I could replicate any of this stuff in a heartbeat and it would probably turn out better than what I had.

An example. I've been working on this indie game for the past 6 months and the code was all over the place (but it worked). I client asked me for a mock-up of another game, which was similar to what I was working on. In three days I built the mock-up which was a thousand times more elegant and worked more efficiently than what I had been working on.

Art is ephemeral. If you hold onto it, it will only stagnate. I regularly destroy my notes and old work to clear my mind and my spirit.

If you can't do this, your craft will never grow.

It depends on the quality of your work. If you haven't got any recognition so far, it's difficult for you to determine whether your at is good or not. Maybe the reason it's easy for you to start again is because it was never very good in the first place, because you have never truly put your entire heart and soul into your work.

Oliver Sanders

And Shirow's grew into shiny girls with torpedo tits, and horse cocks.
