I'm trying out the new 10k deck labeled "Core 2k/6k/10K Further Optimized PIC/SOUND."

I see that there are two card types by default: production and recognition

The recognition cards are a nice addition, but it seems they come before the appropriate recognition cards. Can this be easily fixed? Also, does anyone here use modded cards from this deck?
What tweaks do you use?

vocab recognition cards are a bad idea, there are too many words that have extremely similar english definitions on the back
just delete that card type

also there's a point where doing new cards from a deck like that has diminishing returns so 10k is really not that much better than 6k, considering you're just looking to gain a foundation from drilling anki, not your entire vocabulary

気象庁によりますと、22日は広い範囲で晴れて気温が上がり、最高気温は北海道東部の音更町駒場で33度1分と、5月としては統計を取り始めてから最も高くなったのをはじめ、各地で30度以上の真夏日となりました。

5月としては統計を取り始めてから最も高くなったのをはじめ
Starting with 音更町駒場, for May since the start of statistic collection, this is this the highest temperature,

The の refers to 音更町駒場's temperature only correct?

Starting with 音更町駒場, for May since the start of statistic collection, this is this the highest temperature,
Starting with the fact that the temperature was the highest it's ever been in May since measurements started being taken, with 33 degrees in 音更町駒場 in/of east Hokkaido,
Every region is having 30+ deg "summer heat day"
It's "several" in this case, not "every".

Bentley Evans
Bentley Evans

Ok so is it the case that the its the highest temperature for may since recording started in most regions or just in 音更町駒場

Those katakana are so easy to distinguish if you just take a good look at them as they are lined up to each other:

don't focus too hard on tae kim, just skim, I don't know, the first half of the book and get a feeling for basic verb conjugation (this can help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQlq-hxWRzQ)

start doing core and reading, the sooner the better

spend most of your study time reading, even if it will be slow and painful at first

use tae kim as a reference for running into grammar you don't understand

don't worry if you can't understand what you're reading very well, just keep reading

also considering using a text hooker or OCR program to start with depending on what you're reading, or just rikaisama if it's plain text

Learn2SRS dude, I'm doing 100 a day and I'm not breaking a sweat. I retain maybe 70 percent per day but in a 2 months I'd have learned all of them. Another few months and they're solidified. Also, sentences, not words. I don't even know grammar rules but I can type out sentences that feel right.

Yes, actually. It doesn't bother me as much anymore, or at all actually. I think it might've lessened as well, but I'm not always sure I'm not just that accustomed to it. I was pretty brought down by it as well when I got it. More or less everyone is, but most people also learn to live with just fine. Assuming it doesn't disappear after a while, which there's a chance it will.

Some things to note:
Keep completely clear from high levels of noise for the next couple of weeks and try not using headphones
Apparently taking certain steriods within a day or two sound trauma can be helpful. Consult a doctor about this if you can. Though it might already be too late.

There is no rush
There is a rush though. Very few NEETs are so rich that they can guarantee that they will still be NEETs in 3 or 5 years from now and then once you're thrown into the workforce then the amount of time that you have to do anything with Japanese has now been chopped down to a fraction of what it used to be.
That's not how human memory works
No one has ever learned something by not doing it. Unless you're sleeping then your Japanese didn't benefit from any hours (other than sleep) where you were not doing anything related to Japanese. That doesn't mean that you need to do Japanese non-stop, but there's no point in deluding yourself into thinking that your Japanese is somehow benefiting from a few hours of playing English video games or watching some English movies.
That's how you burn out and lose motivation; you have a natural amount of curiosity and that is how fast you can learn.
Motivation is a crutch and a temporary high. If you depend on motivation in order to do something then you will never accomplish any significant long-term goal. Willpower, a good work ethic, and developing a routine of studying/working towards your goal is what yields results. Needing to feel constantly motivated will work in the beginning, but that's about it.

Brandon Moore

I used to use kanjitomo for OCR, which worked fairly well and it's written in java so it's moderately portable.

If you're into just watching stuff, extracting raw transcripts from japanese subs and reading along is also a great way to learn. http://kitsunekko.net/

I use jisho.org a lot throughout studying. It's a good fallback if you know the keyword of a specific kanji without knowing its associated reading for the vocabulary in question, or if you have to you can search by radical or by handwriting.

If you have some way of getting raw text, throwing it up in firefox and reading over it with rikaisama is great. If you configure rikaisama properly, you can even have it export vocabulary you encounter straight to anki with a single button press. A neat thing about it is you can have it also save the sentence you found the word in for getting a feeling for the context when you review it in the future, as well as help create a stronger bond in memory because you remember encountering it.

I never used core and instead opted for making a mining deck of basically every word I came across which has worked well for me so far, but many here have done well by core as well.

Lucas Foster

You're right on all accounts.

It's funny that people don't realize how fragile the position of "NEET" actually is. Next week, your parents could be driving down the freeway when some drugged up truck driver smashes the fuck out of their car and them right along with it. Or perhaps one of them gets cancer, and the other dies in an accident on a camping trip. When it rains, it pours, as they say. What will you do now? The clock is ticking. You just don't know when the buzzer is going to sound. You certainly hope that it won't buzz for at least another thirty years, but you should prepare for it to buzz sooner rather than later.

And yeah, if I failed to study every time I didn't feel like it, I'd probably study like ten days per month. Because laziness is a big whirlpool that just sucks you deeper and deeper, it probably wouldn't take long for that to turn into zero days per month. This is what happens to most people who start on some long-term task. They feel really motivated for the first two weeks, and then they start saying "I don't feel like it today. And what's a day in the grand scheme of things, really? I'll just do it tomorrow." And then tomorrow comes and goes. And the day after that.

On those days where you just don't want to study, a mixture of long-term motivation and discipline needs to take the place of short-term motivation. You need to choose what you really want in the long run over what you feel like right now.

Lol can I get a recap?
Honestly, so much happened. I can't recount it all. You had to be there.

It was the same guy. I'm pretty sure. It's difficult to keep track of DJT lore sometimes. Anyway, it all started with him suggesting a new picture for the OP, a picture he made of Sakura from Sakura Cardcaptor. The suggestion was rejected for various reasons, which ended up triggered an unholy display of autistic attempts at retaliating against the thread and general threads in general, starting with spamming new threads, spamming the actual thread with fakes question copy-pasted from koohiiforums, reddit and old djt threads, most likely using scrips to automate to process. He later moved onto causing pure thread wars and enourmous amounts of shitposting, like actually making posts about shit. Often in Japanese. All the while ban-evading everything the mods threw at him. He also made threads at /qa/ calling for abolishment of generals, focusing especially on djt. It was the most autistic thing I've ever seen. The sheer persistance was increadible. He kept it up for weeks, months.

Asher Stewart

If you're going to wait til its finished airing, you may as well wait for the BD release, and then you're waiting about a year until the show has aired to watch it...

Watching stuff weekly is really not bad at all. The idea is to pick up quite a lot of shows so you constantly have something to be watching.

For me personally, I find learning onyomi (and mnemonics for them) to be critical to making fast progress with my core anki deck.

Anytime I hit a new kanji I've never seen before, I will look it up on kanji damage and will write new cards for my anki deck (for the onyomi and kunyomi of the kanji). Additionally, if there are important derivative radicals I will look them up as well and include them first.

Additionally when I hit jukugo, I'll also supplement in the relevant constituent pieces for an easy reminder of what it's made up of.
For for instance:
旧 (former) + 姓 (family name) = 旧姓 (maiden name)

Now there's a new kanjidamage anki deck that's out, and I'm considering using it to ease some of the work of making cards.

Does anyone have any interest in this kind of thing?

You'll hear a lot along the lines of「こんなの知らないわ」「そんなの知るかよ!」etc. if you spend any amount of time watching anime.
知る is very commonly used in the negative to express not having one iota of thought or caring about something. In this case she's just uncomfortable because she isn't getting off fast enough, so she says it in annoyance to get that point across.

Remember none of these Japanese verbs are going to correspond to English ones a hundred percent. Japanese is an agglutinative, mora-timed language with simple phonotactics, a pure vowel system, phonemic vowel and consonant length, and a lexically significant pitch-accent.

Word order is normally subject–object–verb with particles marking the grammatical function of words, and sentence structure is topic–comment.

Sentence-final particles are used to add emotional or emphatic impact, or make questions. Nouns have no grammatical number or gender, and there are no articles.

Verbs are conjugated, primarily tense and voice, but not person. Japanese equivalents of adjectives are also conjugated. Japanese has a complex system of honorifics with verb forms and vocabulary to indicate the relative status of the speaker, the listener, and persons mentioned.

I do. The following is my layout and fields, though it may not suit you.

also there's a point where doing new cards from a deck like that has diminishing returns so 10k is really not that much better than 6k
It really is, by about 4k.
considering you're just looking to gain a foundation from drilling anki, not your entire vocabulary
Good one champ. Hate to break it to you but 10k is more or less a foundation for passive vocab. Try reading a book with the first 6k and within a few chapters you'll likely end up with a few dozen hundred words found in the last 4k of that deck. I think people seriously underestimate the sheer volume of words commonly used throughout Japanese media.

Where can I get infos on how Japanese names work?

Like when writing Japanese names, can you use kanji and kana like you want?
I think you can write Yukiko only using kanji like this 雪子 or write it with kana like that ゆきこ is that correct?

Can you mix kanji and kana for names?

Is there a rule that tells you how the kanji in Japanese names are read, is it always kunyomi or what?

There's a specific set of kanji that are allowed to be used in legal names, but otherwise you can do what you want. The only way to find out how kanji are read in a name is to ask the owner of the name how it's read, there's generally no way to know for sure otherwise

Yeah generally there's furigana somewhere at least once, if not you just have to guess or google it

There have been a few times when I've been reading manga and there's been a name of a random classmate with no furigana, you can't google it because it's some random throw away character, so I generally just read it as the most common or nice sounding name that uses the kanji

Adam Anderson
Adam Anderson

explain how reading something in Anki is different to reading it outside of Anki.
What the fuck, how can you possibly think this?

Hudson Brooks
Hudson Brooks

Whatever that guys is doing with anki it's not efficient.
What could you possibly know of efficiency? I learned about how neural networks and the brain works. It's all about making new connections, making new paths between terms. The more connection something has in your brain, the better you remember it. This is called creating more context.
The easiest way to do this is through redundancy. For example, using core2k, core6k and core10k decks at the same time will have triple redundancy for the 2k part and double redundancy for the 2k-6k part. This means you will remember those words 2-3 times as much. But the effect is actually not linear, but exponential. So you spend 2-3 times reviewing something from different sources, but in fact it will reinforce your knowledge by 10 and 100 times magnitude, respectively.

In other words, if someone reviews x word from a deck 3 times, and you review x word from 3 different decks 1 time each only, you spend the same amount of time reviewing, but you will remember that word 33 times as strongly. The conclusion is that you should collect as many anki decks as humanly possible, even better if they have overlaps, which will let you create the strongest neural pathways and learn the language in the least amount of time possible.

Colton Clark

if you do something more you learn it better

It's called timeboxing. You spend 30 minutes reviewing, then you close your eyes and mediate for 15 minutes for maximum efficiency to keep your brain fresh. Of course it takes a lot of times to do your reps like that, but in the end you save time because your fresh brain will remember those words several magnitudes stronger.
