Nolan Brooks
Nolan Brooks

The Iron Ogre
In the 49th of Shinka Era, Prime Minister Tachibana is trying to have Japan recover from the oil shock after the Arab-Israeli conflict. And in order to improve his approval rating even more, the super robot NUTS is imported from the US, and policies for superhuman regulations are strengthened. Michiko of Teito Advertisement, put in charge of test runs, hires ex-IQ member Mari as a pilot, and visits the Superhuman Bureau for more crew members. With the arrival of a superhuman-like super robot operated by a normal human, there is a definitive change in the image of superhumans.

Jiro is literally Little Boy
This show is going places.

Juan Martin
Juan Martin

February 28 in Shinka 21 (1946), presumably at the Ikuta Labs
Satomi and Magotake discuss the weird Little Boy they found, and why the American's ultimate superweapon did not destroy Hiroshima. Satomi theorizes that the weapon did work.
June in Shinka 49 (1974), Shinjuku
Nana Maria, former IQ vigilante, is on the run, hunted by the Imperial Advertisement Agency. She is caught, and a power amplifier helmet is put over her head.
Megasshin and Shirota coerce Jiro into revealing what Raito is up to. Raito and Aki are blowing up bridges to stop the new American superweapon, the NUTS. They are hindered by Megasshin from destroying the blue NUTS, who is activated by Michiko. Before Michiko can unleash the full arsenal of NUTS upon giant Aki, Raito manages a lucky hit on the back, causing the NUTS to leak highly dangerous fuel. The fuel turns out to be the molecular fission liquid that the Biodestroyer Bot used against the Eternal Family. That liquid also harms Aki, who is saved just in time by Shirota. The leaking fuel causes a terrible ecological disaster, which the Bureau investigates.
Jiro comes under harsh critique by the more law-abiding superhumans, who reprimand him for not doing anything against the violent superhumans who work with him.
Judas reveals that he used Jiro's blood to augment Aki, and uses it to heal her from the terrible wounds. Also, Jiro's blood is responsible for causing giant monstrous mutations in harmless animals, turning them into kaijuus.
Premier-minister Tachibana tries to force Imperial Ads to spin the disaster in a good way, but they sever all ties with him, revealing to the public the secret deals he made with Master Ultima.
Satomi plans the final steps to his great plans, a world without superhumans, which does unhinge Michiko.
She is then contacted by Fuurouta, who brings her to Jiro's hideout to discuss the power amplifier helmet.
When Jiro puts it on to test it, a flashback to the past commences, up to the year Shinka 21.

Kevin Foster
Kevin Foster

What a good episode, seems like we're already starting to kick it into the endgame. A bit sad to see that the Jiro-league can't seem to come together on a single thing since they're much more likable than the Bureau.

For the reference charts, the Blue Nuts being brought online in Shinka 49 (approximately 1974) is of course a Getter Robo reference (anime series started in 1974).

There was of course also a war between the Arab States and Israel in the real world 1973, the Yom Kippur war, which lead to the oil crisis.
With oil getting pricier, the superpowers of that era looked upon that nifty new power source that was nuclear fission.
No mention of djinnies blowing up tanks on either sides, though.

There was a bombing in 1974 in Tokyo at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Headquarters which killed eight people and injured over 300 people by a superradical anti-Japanese left-wing terrorist group.
Raito's blowing up of the bridge and then causing the NUTS to leak harmful liquid into the river might be a reference to that.

That episode might have a lot more real-world references too, of course.

No mention of djinnies blowing up tanks on either sides, though.

It's really a bad analogy. They they portray it as a classic struggle between modern vs the past, but that model doesn't work. The tools of breaking the west via the oil embargo is absolutely a result of modern technology. In fact Saudi Aramco is set up by Americans (and later nationalized by the Saudis). The ideology isn't anti-modern, it's motivated by greater regional antipathy towards Israel and sympathy with the Palestinians as well as an underlying desire for the Arabs as a whole under the Saudis to achieve greater leverage in the world.

Perhaps the ancient monstrosities refers to the eternal feeling of hatred and animosity between both sides.
Genies are beings of Arabian folklore, but are also mentioned as those legendary 72 beings imprisoned and chained by King Solomon of Israel.
It might not necessarily be a struggle between modern vs ancient forces, but about being set in a new world with new possibilities, while peace dies and war continues because of ancient grievances, and nobody really trying to find common grounds.

That is of course an extremely simplified view, I admit.

Problem is, if you try to kill the gobinmnet, you also tend to kill civilians as collateral damage who might not have been pro-gobinment. But after having their daily lives disrupted by acts of terrorism against the government which causes trains to become tardy, and open fights between supers that break up busses, people will be in favor of harsh anti-terrorist laws just so that life becomes agreeable again like it was before.
And that's dangerous.

Concrete Revolutio is the story of failed revolutionary Jiro Hitoyoshi who dreamed of a better future, but succeeded at nothing.

Sebastian Gomez

Why are you still watching this?

Colton Phillips
Colton Phillips

The only comparable analogy of the oil embargo in CR terms is basically the Satomis of the Arab World doing this to assert their power within the Middle East and internationally. Basically a chessmaster who has coopted one side (egypt) against another (israel) now claims he is the real power (but he really doesn't have that much power like the fact Satomi can't force the resignation of the PM)

Perhaps the ancient monstrosities refers to the eternal feeling of hatred and animosity between both sides.

The rise of the current day antisemitism in the former Ottoman territories corresponds with the rise of ethnic nationalism and the reforms towards modernity. The feud between the Arabs and Israel is very much a modern result due to nationalism the basic arguments being the jews are outsiders and not considered arabs (unless you are in morocco) and the rise of Israel which is seen as an embarrassment by the Arabs on both religious and ethnic grounds. The point is the modern-day "feud" erupted into war in 1948. The 7-Day War/YomKippur are (in a very simplified fashion) Arab attempts at wiping away the stain of military defeat (and recapture territory). The oil embargo happens when the military option is exhausted and the Saudis want to show they have leverage on the international stage against America and the West that their rivals in Egypt don't.

Cameron Lewis
Cameron Lewis

Wait, remember the Gagon arc and how Emi said that Jiro is her's because she can shoulder the burden as seen with the burn marks.

What if the series ends with Jiro going into nuclear meltdown mode and Kikko sacrifices herself by burning alive to stop the fallout?

I thought the oil embargo was also to punish the West for having sided with Israel while they themselves were of course helped by the Soviet union.

Ayden Walker
Ayden Walker

The problem is from a meta-textual pov of CR being a mirror of the real word the nuclear problem is still there (ex. Fukushima) and it's still spawning protests and resentment against the government. So Jirou can't fuck off to another world or die for that matter. An innocent like Kikkou dying to make him realize that he went too far and that there has to be another way besides being a cockslave to Master Ultimate or fighting the man forever.

It's complicated. The Saudis were anti-Communist and allies to America and spent the 70s fighting communist backed insurgencies and governments in Yemen and Oman. Countries like Egypt/Syria/Iraq were the closest to the USSR. Saudi Arabia doesn't like that, but they agree on the oil embargo because the issue of Israel/Palestine is the biggest issue at that time that they couldn't even ignore or risk the wrath of their populace.

Also, humans who won't come to a peaceful solution after you bring down the government -with collateral damage- and just let bygones be bygones, because of personal grudges even though they knew you did what you did to survive, are enemies. Plain and simple.

Not him, but I thought the US military's naked insanity and pic related were kind of hamfisted. I still liked it for what it was, though, even if I didn't really agree with some parts of the message.

ConRevo is no stranger to mixing the pathos with wacky 60s-70s Japanese anime stuff, in fact that's the point of the show a lot of the time. However I feel this subject of soldiers with PTSD having mental breakdowns veered way too far into cartoonish territory in a way that the show just couldn't blend the seriousness of it with the imagery. I felt ConRevo kind of wanted to have its cake and eat it too with Jonathan, having him be sympathetic while also having him embody the US imperialism that dragged Japan kicking and screaming into the modern era. It didn't feel like an effort to create grayness though, more like the writers didn't want to commit to him purely being a victim.

That being said, the last moments between Jonathan and his superior officer whose rank I can't remember felt more in line with what I'd expect from ConRevo. It helped humanize the villain quite a bit.

Anthony Butler

Ah, I misread your comment and thought you were referring to this episode instead of the Rambo episode. Yeah, a lot of it felt pretty off.

If you mean in regards to his 'my country doesn't smell like this', I think that was supposed to refer more to the fact that Conrevo US killed off all its nature spirits and shit like that, not that there isn't any actual nature in the US.

What said but i think it meant how the US is a land built by humans. The native americans have their spirits in nature just like the japanese do. Americans however persecuted them and built the modern states purely on human ingenuity. Such, the US smell only of humans instead of natural spirits and the like. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Blake Gray
Blake Gray

That's also my interpretation of it.
It's the difference of Americans, who do believe in manifest destiny and that humanity can shape its future by its own hand, contrasted to the Japanese worldview, where one has accept good and bad things happening, and natural calamities are being revered as deities that one has to placate.
It's the difference between the pioneer spirit that conquers the land vs island inhabitants who learned to live with tsunamis, volcano eruptions and earthquakes.

It can't be helped.

I only just figured out Jiro is a bomb baby after this episode
And after reading this thread it seems like it should've been kind of obvious, fuck. Who knows what the fuck else I haven't picked up on?

Carson Walker
Carson Walker

It's all about them symbolism, baby. He is the new generation who must live in the age of the atomic era, where mutual assured destruction is only a button away.
But it doesn't always have to be only about fear from the nuclear energy. There is also potential to make it work for the betterment of humanity.

James Martin

The giant shadow of a dragon in the middle of Hiroshima kinda gave it away.

That, and the baby being found in a crater near the wreckage of the Enola Gay.

My guess is that the Enola Gay crashed into a wish-fulfilling dragon, and the dragon's soul was reborn into the bomb. Because it was named Little Boy, and because names are important, the bomb-dragon hybrid became a little pink-haired boy.

30 years later, that boy is chasing after a silly dream where superhumans can coexist in peace with the rest of normal humanity that worships, but also fears them.

Jirou's just using JUSTICE as an excuse to be an idecisive fuck at this point.

Aaron Brooks
Aaron Brooks

Yeah. Jiro's just talking the talk, but he's not really walking the walk.
If he does things like trying to save Akira Shirota from being executed by them, or saving Aki from arrest, that's something they will dislike, but they can respect it, because he stands up to his conviction.
But if he just stands there doing nothing, he's just a hindrance to anyone.

Zachary Ortiz
Zachary Ortiz

Great episode.
I'm glad to see Claude, the "justice, freedom, peace" thing again and how different characters react around them.
Megashin, Satomi and the secretary seem to fight for peace while Fuurouta and Aki for freedom.
I'm not sure who is fighting for justice, but for what it looks like, I think Jirou, Earth-chan and Daitetsu are the ones that care about justice the most.

I don't really know what Raito is anymore and Judas is unclear as well. The Bureau is also pretty unclear in what they want.

James Rogers

Raito is an extremist anarchist, and the Bureau is concerned with regulating and helping the superhumans in a legal sanctioned way, instead of doing anything it takes no matter if good or right.

Bureau is concerned with regulating and helping the superhumans in a legal sanctioned way, instead of doing anything it takes no matter if good or right.
That's the only way it can be done. If the bureau started clearly opposing the government then they would turn into Jiro's group leaving no one "pro superhuman" in the government. They do whatever they can.

He is what Jiro would be if Jiro was as extremist as him. Shiba Raito defines himself as carrying out true justice, which is why he frees innocents as well as criminals.

Cooper Adams
Cooper Adams

I find that each of them represent what happens when you take a ideal to the extreme, Raito is extremist and doesn't care who he releases, even if they are good or bad, with Earth-chan going for justice but always ends up hurting others and herself as Kikko pointed out in the previous season is that the person who created her did it with malicious intent on his heart and there is Megashin who defends the government, even if said government isn't doing anything good for its subjects

Aaron Clark

Jose Stewart

nah user we moral relativism now
it was pretty clear when Ultrawoman mocked him and Cougar punched him for not doing anything.
Jiro's basically going get told he's a piece of shit for not choosing, choosing, and refusing to choose all at the same time and it'll be him taking down Claude and Kikko in a flashback where he decided that giving a fuck wasn't his game anymore then the next episode is him giving a fuck again because McEvil Evil plan will unfold and Jiro will have to bring his seigi all over him.
Ideals don't exist anymore, just people trying their best to get it right. Thats the point of the show.

Mason Long
Mason Long

It's not like the government is evil, though.
At most, it's amoral.
Premierminister Tachibana, as corrupt as he is still did his best at making ConRevo-Japan a great nation again, rebuilding it from World War 2, and he did succeed.
It's just that superhumans are one of the most important resources in the superhero-universe of Concrete Revolutio.
They must be secured, for the future.

Superhumans symbolize energy, youth, the future, the new generation of people, students, philosophers, teachers, firemen, workers, children. They are a nation's greatest treasure.
The hopes and dreams of everyone. People everyone looks up to.

Christian Mitchell

That meshes well with fedora's plan to end superhumans, and that whole thing with him saying that secretary will be superhuman when she puts on the helmet.
I guess he wants to make earth human only. All the superhumans need to leave because reasons.
