Basically you only hear about an illness if the person wanted it to be known, or if that person had already died.

This is why it is nearly always a surprise when we hear stuff like this.

The issue is that the artist doesn't write the script.
If there is a demand, then arrangements can be made for a different writer. I am just not sure there is a demand after so long. It is more profitable to just create a new IP.
