>character says "papa" a near universally understood childish term for a father with no need for translation.
>subbers use "daddy" instead, which is kinda like "papa" except sleazy and gross.

Subbers are like....not the most mentally healthy people I dont think?

he meant Ha-rigato

>character says "onee-san"
>subs say the character's name

>subs use japanese honorifics in english

>onii-sama
>HONORABLE OLDER BROTHER

>hai
>I'll be right there!

Those baki subs aren't subs, it's just the dub script kek.

To be fair it is hard to translate japanese honorifics to english.
Like what do you translate Senpai as?

That is the stupidest thing.

>character frequently uses English words in their speech
>subs emulate this by replacing the English words with the Japanese word of whatever they're saying

Perfectly reasonable in many cases.

You don't.

Swallow lead.

The biggest barrier to good subs is subbers with a poor grasp of English even when its their native tongue.

Agreed.

>"Hai?" gets translated as "what?"

jisho.org/word/はい

That's a perfectly legitimate translation, though.

>not watching raw
>relying on shitty, sub par subs made by n4 level translators

>>subbers use "daddy" instead, which is kinda like "papa" except sleazy and gross.
Maybe if you're a sick fuck who gets his understanding of the world from porn. My daughter calls me daddy all the time. There is nothing sleazy about it.

>Translating onii-chan as big brother
>Translating onii-sama as big brother
>Translating onii-san as big brother
>Translating onii as big brother
>Translating nii-san as big brother
>Translating nii-chan as big brother
>Translating nii-sama as big brother
>Translating nii as big brother
>Translating nii-nii as big brother
>Translating aniki as big brother

Of course there isn't
Look dude, what you do with your daughter is your business, we're not here to judge you

your daughter also calls me daddy

user, she want to fuck.

Not everyone wants to sink thousands of hours into learning a foreign language just to watch cartoons.

But you'll certainly sink hours of your day watching anime instead of say, actually learning the language used so you no longer have to rely on subs conveying a fraction of the meaning.

penis in the pooper user

Might try learning just so i can watch more than dubbed anime, i dont like reading when im trying to watch something.

>My daughter calls me daddy all the time
>Sup Forumsnon has daughter
this is bad

>character clearly says an english word
>sub still gets it wrong

>character says nigga
>subs say negro
Literally what the fuck?

Super Danganronpa 2.5's sub was so totally retarded it made me resize the video element to hide the subtitles

your daughter is whore

Yep. Perfectly valid in 99.9% of cases, because most of the time the character has just chosen one to use and continues using it, not particularly putting any more or less honorific into the term.

>Translating kyaku as customer
>Translating kyaku-san as customer
>Translating kyaku-sama as customer
>Translating okayku-san as customer
>Translating okyaku-sama as customer

If you want to get really pedantic then brother/sister naming conventions are just the beginning.

And then, by the tenth episode, right in the middle of the show, after a major change in the relationship, the character uses another honorific and you're fucked because you have used only big brother till now for your subs.

Never, ever translate honorifics, it will bite you in the ass later.

You do it for the porn games. The cartoons are just a side benefit.

And it doesn't matter because you can tell from the way the character says it, expression, etc the change in character.

Speak for yourself dude.

>2k/6k
How cute.

Gotta start somewhere.

Just remember to stat picking up grammar sooner rather than later.

And you need to start working on conjugations or else you won't recognize most of the verbs and adjectives when they're used.

>"onee-san"
>Dub has it be sissy.

Post your daughter's feet pics pls

...

audibly lost

name 3 times this happened

>character says "naisu sutairu"
>subbed as "nice style"

what did he say in reality

>European or American setting
>onii-chans and hnorifics everywhere

Quack

I actually take that a step further and think that there is no reason translating that at all in any show. In English speaking countries we call our brother and sister by their names, so why not just translate it like that? I also think honorifics should never be translated except in love stories where it typically indicates plot development, such as dropping the honorific and using the given name.

This one annoys me a lot. Is "papa" not a phrase in America or something?

>European setting
>people bow to their elders/superiors

>character says hamburger
>subs translate it as Salisbury Steak

>anime takes place in western country where no one would speak japanese
>everyone speaks it like its the default language there

Ahh you are motherfucker

Pretty sure it's recognized here too.

>anime that takes place in an English speaking country
>the dub is shit

Alternatively:
>anime that takes place in Japan
>the dub is above-average/top-tier

>Sup Forumsmblr
>dubfag
Fuck off.

I didn't have any better reaction images

That's because you're a crossboarding cancer and a newfag.

>american
>no fat, black or transgender people
Really japan?
