what's something you've always wanted to see in a VN? I feel motivated to make something and share with you guys if you're interested.
I was thinking about making something a bit more psychological that really tugs at the heartstrings and hits deep - or do you prefer pure sex VNs?
For heroins do you prefer something different like monstergirls? cookie-cutter stereotypes? playing on those stereotypes or something completely different?
There are definitely very few fat girls in VNs I think having one could be really cute.
Samuel Torres
I just want a when they cry 5-6
I'm sure one exists somewhere buddy
Carter James
>what's something you've always wanted to see in a VN? Futanari heroine in a VN that's not a nukige.
Gavin Thomas
do you think a lot of people would want to play as a grill though?
Sebastian Hughes
But I want to play as a boy, user. Heroine's dick also has to be larger.
Christopher Rivera
>I feel motivated to make something Then start writing one now. Don't even wait for this thread to finish. Don't use waiting for some shitty ideas as an excuse to procrastinate. If you really feel motivated then you also already know what kind of VN you want to write and you'll have started actually writing some of it before tomorrow.
PROTIP: you don't need any sound design or art until you have at least the skeleton of the story complete. At most you need a vague idea of what the key characters will look like until you have that much sorted out.
Adam Jackson
Debutopia
Jordan Taylor
Thanks for the tips user, I'm just really stuck in terms of writing right now - I'm more of an artist but I've been really inspired by Welcome to the NHK recently - I don't want to make a VN like them but more about the realistic characters in it - like something that plays on stuff like anxiety or something of the sort
Asher Clark
>working on a VN >everyone whos played it so far thinks its cute >don't wanna post it on Sup Forums since everyone will call it SJW because the protag isn't white >suck it up and post it in /agdg/ >one got booed out of the thread At least it's almost done and all 4 of my friends will play it.
Isaac Phillips
>>one got booed out of the thread Oops, what I meant to say was I posted one screenshot and got booed out of the thread.
Jason Clark
my man
Benjamin Butler
I can say to you now, it will 99,99% be pure shit, or you won´t finish it at all. The market is saturated with VNs, problem is that only a select few of them are good.
When people say Clannad, Fate and other shit like If My Heart Had Wings are good, is simply because they haven´t read/experienced a lot of works.
SG do a lot of things right, but also some things wrong, like the merry-go-around of the girls.
The best VNs are the ones that tell a story. Saya no Uta and Muramasa are one the few.
Camden Thomas
if a mexican fuck can make va11 hall-a then you have NO excuses. NONE.
Jace Miller
>a VN where you do nothing but romance fat girls Go back to tumblr. Being fat is something that you inflict upon yourself and an indicator of a slothful greedy personality.
>Futanari heroine in a VN that's not a nukige. I guess that technically would be an inversion of the norm... You'd have to be a really competent romance writer to make it work. If it's a typical highschool romance thing then it could be interesting if it took the Hourou Musuko route and focused it on the MC dealing with bullying for the most part.
The main problem with doing futa is that they don't exist.
Alexander Bennett
Post the screenshot you fucking hack. DO IT DO IT DO IT
Carson King
I know this feeling user - I kinda wanted to make something revolved around bullying but I worry people will see it as a soapbox or something It's a shame we can't really touch on obscure subjects or do something different without it being seen as Tumblr, but keep trying! I would like to see your game !
Christopher Carter
shut up moogy
James Carter
>Friends liking it Maybe because they are not honest? They are your friends. Post screen.
Ayden Morgan
>The main problem with doing futa is that they don't exist. I know. Don't rub it in ;_;
Jaxson Brown
I want it to be really heavily story-based though, I get really really sick of seeing the same shit over and over again, other inspiration for me besides Welcolme to the NHK is Aku no Hana, low budget but god damn does it make me feel nostalgic and melancholic.
Also is this a cute artstyle to use or do you guys prefer it to be really anime looking?
Kayden Lewis
>prefer it to be really anime looking trashman.jpeg-large
Ryan Robinson
>Aku no Hana >Low budget >??? For the love of god, did you watch the shitty anime adaptation? You pretty much did yourself a huge disservice then. Fucking read the manga and don´t talk about the garbage anime.
Brandon Bennett
A storybased futanari VN could be a really nice route - aren't you guys sick of HIghschool themes by now though? what about something in a work environment or college? School is obviously easier but isn't it tired out by now?
Mason Thomas
The only VNs made by anons that are considered great (that I know of) are Katawa Shoujo, Everlasting Summer, and Unteralterbach.
Of those three, Katawa Shoujo is the one that shines out the most thanks to its surprisingly realistic (and therefore immersive) writing. ES is mainly great because of its soundtrack, clever themes, and hidden routes. The other one is just so politically incorrect that it's fucking hilarious. None of them have voice acting, and yet still all of them were made by teams of over a dozen anons each.
Point I'm making is that if you're making a solo project then keep it simple because it's a big task. Make it a
Adam Wood
I read the manga and watched the anime - I really really liked the anime though, I thought it did some things just as well as the manga and I actually really liked the rotoscoping lol. second half of the manga was really bad though it's just shit that they cut it off before things hit the fan but there were some really touching scenes.
Leo Foster
I don't care, I just want something that's not nukige. Though it's universally true that older onee-san type>any highschool archetype
Nathaniel Bell
Dark murder mystery
Connor Brown
>The best VNs are the ones that tell a story.
Name some more
Austin Johnson
also harem or one that focuses on one or maybe two girls as a choice? or just a single romance?
Matthew Hall
>aren't you guys sick of HIghschool themes by now though? what about something in a work environment or college? School is obviously easier but isn't it tired out by now? You can get away with school themes as long as there's something original about it. Those other two are fine too - the only arguable downside is the heroines being older if there are any.
Good sense of proportion, but: >tumblr-nose >completely flat chest even when there's bag-straps pulling the shirt tight across the chest I mean unless that the joke and it's supposed to be a trap or something...
Juan Martinez
If you disliked the second half of the manga, I´m pretty sure you are not very good at writing then.
The second part is the most important in the entire story, both in emotional impact and character growth. Is the part where the MC shed his pretentious husk. Realizing that he has been acting like retard the entire time. And finally meets a girl that is right for him.
It nailed the basics of coming-of-age story progression perfectly.
Luke Martin
You can't really do a harem without either completely shifting the tone of the story, or going full 'School Days'.
Julian Ramirez
What if I am Girugamesh and I have to loot and plunder and run Mesopotamia?
Benjamin Gray
>if I am Girugamesh If you are Girugamesh then you already stopped giving a fuck about the tone of the story, so it's fine.
Samuel Bennett
Just because my opionion differs on something doesn't mean I'm wrong user-kun. I also didn't claim to be a good writer it's just something I want to try my hand at because my english are good and I like stories. What about Onani Master Kurosawa and Kokou no Hitou? Umibe no Onnanoko?
I agree, I'm really sick of harems but what do other anons enjoy?
Well I was considering doing a trap so I guess that works kek it's a work in progress but now I'm really self conscious about the noses
Tyler Richardson
VLR Danganronpa (only the first one) Umineko no Naku Koro ni Fata morgana no Yakata
Dies irae Yume Miru Kusuri These last two does merry-go-around but they got some good stuff worth trudging through.
Michael Watson
ghost trick
Zachary Cooper
Tons of those exist already
Nathaniel Ward
VLR does not tell a story it gives very little details on the actual plot that's the entire point it's a mystery same with danganronpa/2 danganronpa especially since they had to specifically create multiple novels/spin-offs and an anime to tell the actual story part of the universe stop talking out of your ass kys I bet you like katawa shoujo
Alexander Hill
Play Kara no Shōjo and Kara no Shōjo: The Second Episode.
They're very enjoyable and uplifting games full of delicious waifu material so choose a cute one!
Noah White
Second danganronpa is superior, don't listen to this guy
Kayden Rivera
This nigger.
Don't let your dreams be maymays.
DO IT!

The problem with those is it's basicallly impossible to get the true ends without a guide

Michael Nelson
Did I say you were wrong? I just implied that if you can´t recognize the good part of the writing then maybe you won´t be able to write something good.
Good thing that you mentioned OMK. Same thing, the genius of OMK is how the MC turns from a relatable jerk into a likable person. All his high and lows are something you can feel. At the end of the story the guy is someone you can be proud of. Again, coming-of-age story done right and one of my favourites.
Kokou no Hitou is great, but handles different themes from OMK and AnH.
Haven´t read that, but is from Asano right? I read his other work, Punpun. And if it´s anything like that, is probably garbage. The main problem with Punpun is character regression. The MC have learned nothing by end of his journey. Absolute waste of time since it misses the most important point.
Anthony Butler
I've never seen a VN with painted sprites before.
>now I'm really self conscious about the noses Tumblr-nose is where there's shading (and it's always red) where the nose is, as opposed to shading where the nose would cast shade given the position of the light source. Drawing a nose in profile is always a pain though. The most common I see is for one side of the nose to be given a simple line then for the shading to go outside of where the nose would be, giving it depth. Not telling you to go full anime, but just something to keep in mind.
In her (his?) hair is casting shade to the right, so you'd expect nose to cast a tiny bit of shade to the right too.
Actually, you might want to start thinking of where the light-sources are, because the shading feels extremely inconsistent overall.
Juan Martin
Sorry for taking so long, here's a little imagedump of the first ~15 minutes of it, the game is getting pretty long now. At this point all I really need to do is clean up all the unfinished art, and redraw old, ugly things. I have someone else doing the background art for me. imgur.com/a/et7g8
Gavin Martinez
>Spend hours skipping text and changing places you go in hopes of a change in the story What do you think I'm made of time
Tyler Gray
>VLR = Not telling a story >A mystery has no story >A story about hope = Not a story You might as well not have posted. And Katawa Shoujo has a good message, I just did not like the protagonist and that a lot of the girls were walking archetypes. Is fine.
Benjamin Fisher
Vanilla loli shota romance. I want to experience having a childhood crush that actually return my feeling and do couple stuff that we barely know with her together, while growing up together and have our relationship lasted until marriage amd beyond.
Matthew Garcia
Fate tells a perfectly coherent and well-developed story about the nature of altruism and idealism. It's also more ambitious than Saya no Uta and the crap you listed here (Umineko? VLR? YMK? Seriously?). You are an idiot
Easton Moore
thanks for tips user, I probably should've finished it before posting but just wanted a basic guideline to see if it's appealing enough of a style
Ayden Martinez
mfw it's actually really go back to tumblr.
Logan Baker
>Fate > Umineko
John Evans
Saber is over rated garbage.
Rider is the one true King so bend the knee faggots.
Jaxon King
Are there any VNs with a shred of self awareness? Like not as in, "We break the fourth wall, we're quirky, whooooOOooa." More like, "The otaku complex is a farce and we aren't pulling punches."
Because it seems the entire genre is dedicated to waifu bullshit and pornography.
Xavier Allen
Try Zettai Hero Project.
Wyatt Rodriguez
I really really like this idea - especially since there are so many phases when growing up too
I think your style is cute user, it's different to the norm
Brandon Phillips
Supply and demand buddy
Camden Cruz
Of the three I took issue with, you're defending Umineko? Even its fans think the last chapters are garbage. Come on now.
Matthew Gomez
If it's more polished (with cleaner lines and better shading) then it could work.
Even as it is it's more than serviceable enough for character concept art now get on with writing the story!
Liam Nelson
>Posted image seems okay >Click Imgur album Holy fuck. Is like any other tumblr garbage you can find anywhere. Look I find your character design on humans to be alright. But when you draw fucking whatever that blue shit is, and other furry trash, is a big no. I bet you can get some fans on tumblr, is basically all of their fetishes. Wouldnotread/10
Adam Baker
Has anyone told you Mr. DJ looks like Megamind with long hair?
Jacob Garcia
Cross Channel. It's the Eva of VNs.
The English translation is quite bad though.
Jayden Williams
Yeah, that's about how it went at /agdg/ too.
Isaiah Perry
wew I don't even know why I asked
The only way a dev could lure people into playing it in the first place is if it met the waifu requirements, at which point the jig would be up. You can't have the cake and eat it too.
David Thompson
Is like anything you can find on a furry tumblr blog.
Justin Turner
I enjoy dark, sad, depressing VNs.
Swan Song was pretty fucking depressing.
Kara no Shōjo and Kara no Shōjo: The Second Episode were brutal and also depressing.
Saya no Uta was alright for being short; almost every ending were surprisingly sad.
Can anyone else suggest any other downer, sad, depressing, brutal ones?
Oliver Reed
It actually reminds me a lot of the recent pokemon game art, I really don't think it's that bad and depending on what the target market is I think it could work pretty alright
Lincoln Rodriguez
Tsukihime
Landon Ross
>Are there any VNs with a shred of self awareness? Sure. For exampl- >Like not as in, "We break the fourth wall, we're quirky, whooooOOooa." More like, "The otaku complex is a farce and we aren't pulling punches." As in one that punishes the player for acting like an otaku then? Your idea of 'self-awareness' is lost on me. Not all VNs are even about otakus.
Leo Lopez
I don't really see it, I was thinking of making his skin red, but I felt that would be overbearing.
Kevin Baker
Ananzi also has striking resemblance to Renamon.
Gabriel Hall
>it's different to the norm
Literally looks like anything on tumblr.
>tumblr artstyle >furries >dyed hair >probably lot of "queer" characters
back to tumblr.
Grayson Bell
king of the gays maybe. if you're talking about protagonists that aren't self inserts you have boatloads. As for ones that critically challenge otaku culture (personally I think it's just contrarian work to have it be a VN in the first place, see: evangelion), chaos;head is (somehow) the go to game. Saya route in saya no uta works too.
Juan Thompson
depressing shit is also my game, muh nigga that's kinda why I wanted to go for something psychological like maybe the MC has some social anxiety disorder or some shit will check those VNs out, thanks user
thanks user! will start scratching up some ideas
Angel Flores
how about you just play some bad ends in normal VNs you edgelord
Jaxson Adams
Now that's a stench. >probably lot of "queer" characters There's no romance.
Camden Mitchell
>downer/sad/depressing Rin's 'neutral' ending from Katawa Shoujo is pretty soul-crushing. Watching her inexorably slip away from you all because of a misunderstanding you made can be extremely depressing if you hit that ending blind.
>brutal Summer Radish Vacation does technically have a good ending, but if you're playing it blind you'll instead have to experience a hell of perpetual netorare as every girl you start to get close to is stolen from you by Tomaru.
Starless/Discipline bad endings are actually too brutal to take seriously.
Sorry user, I really can't think of any great examples.
Jonathan Morales
can you just not comment on visual novels if katawa shoujo is the only VN you ever read in fact can you leave
Brandon Bennett
>can you just not comment on visual novels if katawa shoujo is the only VN you ever read >ignores that 3 other visual novels were listed can you just read a full comment before responding to it
Blake Perez
Noice, m8.
Swan Song is a major downer and starts slooooow but it's worth playing.
One of the two MC of Kara no Shōjo: The Second Episode has some major mental issues; you could in theory skip the first one since it gives you a brief recap.
Check em out, senpai.
Never finished Katawa Shoujo I might play that next.
Starless/Discipline/Bible Black were meh.
Maybe brutal was the wrong word choice; I just like VNs that have are dark, bleak, sad and can be considered depressing in general and don't really have any happy endings.
Gavin Ross
Fire your artists and probably your writers
Sebastian Phillips
that's not 3 good recommendations. that's 3 "oh hey look I dont know what im getting into but that seemed relevant so i'll post it". Fucking NTR counts as "depressing"? Starless is supposed to be grimdark when the consequences more or less get springed on you for what's essentially shock value?
The sharin no kuni fandisc is brutal. Muv luv alternative is brutal. Hell you could even argue planetarian is brutal. The discussion about "real deal" vs "disney shit" has been around since essentially the dawn of time for the VN "community". Don't pretend you're somehow an expert for having a passing interest in VNs.
William Mitchell
Have you played Fata Morgana?
Josiah Morris
MLA (yes you have to slog through extra) planetarian chaos;head
Levi Gomez
What do you guys think of YU-NO?
Hunter Watson
What are the best translated VNs? I have gone through Rewrite, G-Senjou No Maou, HoshiMemo, If my heart had wings, Princess Evangile and a few others that I can't recall.
I know it's the pleby shit but I wanted something fun to start with. I think my preference for specific art styles has lead me to look past some of the better VNs.
Austin Lopez
Yeah, it was great.
The music was amazing and most of the stories were good; the first and third were my favorites. The second seemed to drag on forever. The rest of the game was solid too.
I didn't mind the main character not having any sexual organs; it felt sad and tragic, no heavy handed SJW bullshit.
8/10
Grayson Scott
cant get past the pc98 artstye
Jose Ward
It looks good user, don't listen to them.

> I think my preference for specific art styles has lead me to look past some of the better VNs. >I have gone through Rewrite yeah ur fucked kid

>ctrl+f Fate and Tsukihime >only 4 results, 2 of them shits on it without telling the reason Why?

the only thing that will always be in vogue in the VN "community" is that if it's popular, it's shit.
Nicholas Gomez
Tsukihime

I've always wanted more gay shit in VNs so I downloaded Ren'py and fucked around on it for a month and made a simple romance between an elf and troll. Ren'py seems easy to use but are there better things to use or nah?
