Game "X" adds several conventions to genre that are used in most games of its kind

>Game "X" adds several conventions to genre that are used in most games of its kind
>Inevitably this means that games are made that not only have the conventions that X added, but also improve on its flaws for a more enjoyable, fulfilling experience
>X becomes dated and still decent to play, but somewhat of a grind compared to the irrefutable superior followup
>Every top games list claims that X is the greatest game ever made of its kind, perhaps the greatest game ever made.

Is it safe to say Ocarina of Time is the most overrated game ever?

That's why video games will never be considered an art form. It's a media where the ones that claim to enjoy it can't appreciate the pieces for what they are and instead cry that they get dated and obscure.
Guess what, the game is the same, your shitty perception that has changed due to the casualiation of the industry.

Games can't be considered an art form because we keep trying to figure out the "greatest ever made" of an art form that's more diverse than any other.

No, that's Mario 64

Not even close when Assassin's Creed, TLoU, HL2, Bioshock (any of them) and any 2deep4u indie non game (like Gone Homo and Inside) exist.

That happens with other art forms. Bach was ignored for several decades because his style was considered outdated.

This is really stupid, try read a old book and you will see that the writing is dated...videogames aren't art just because they aren't made for expression and aesthetics but to be games foremost

That's Half-Life 2

Such as?

most of these games are superior to their sequels though

by dated and obscure I mean the gameplay, which is the nexus of the media.
A books writing is just the means to get to the core of the media, the story.A proper compassion would be saying that the book's story is dated;which is bullshit

>X becomes dated and still decent to play, but somewhat of a grind compared to the irrefutable superior followup
Literally never happens, this is shit only stupid fucking "gamers" believe while being shilled some piece of casual shit.

What the fuck did HL2 add?

it add nice facial animations and pyhssc engine

HL2 is the standard for "cinematic" shooters nowadays.
long hallways, spaced out exposition from NPCs while you only move the camera, few shooting sections, maybe a turret section or vehicles, etc
every FPS stick a campaign with these elements to their games

Jurassic Park Trespasser did physics first but that game was released unfinished and a Daikatana level flop.

Fuck off, Arin of Game Grumps

>tfw no Trespasser sequel for VR

but when people complain that some old games are dated they aren't talking about gameplay itself but problems caused by the hardware and software limitations at the time that's why I still see it like somenone complaining about the words used in a book or a movie being black and white

>FFVII
>Adding anything at all

Yeah because Jurassic Park was clunky unlike HL2 which was polished and interesting.

absolutely nothing wrong with physics engine fucking up and shoot yourself in the face, and also belt yourself in the face with big steel beam

the hardware limitations are in most cases irrelevant(i.e.: demakes and modern indie games realized in older systems). The industry had a different view of of gameplay altogether and had to pan out into many different directions to find what really made that gameplay feel good to play.
The fallout of these actions were the creation or ramification of subgenres in the industry in the last millennium based on a unique game that set the basys for there on foward;roguelikes, doom clones, diablo clones. Most of those weren't the very first of their genres but they add enough features to mark the essentials needed for future games.
You don't see that nowadays.Games don't dare anymore. They stick to the formula and that's it.

We aren't talking about the same thing...I'm saying that people that don't like older games don't like them because mostly of differences in control or graphics caused by hardware limitations, I'm not comparing the overall quality of old and new games
