How did the PSP manage to sell relatively well, but this one did so badly?

How did the PSP manage to sell relatively well, but this one did so badly?

it has no good games.

Proprietary Memory Cards

Didn't PSP have the same thing?

IT doesnt have any exclusive games.

No exclusive god of war, no exclusive metal gear, no exclusive kingdom hearts, no exclusive soul calibur or other fighting game; no good exclusive rpgs...

You can play every vita game on better platforms.

sony dropped support for the vita

>psp sold 82 million
I honestly don't understand how it achieved this

No big names exclusives

no you can use the psp memory card for cameras

When did Soul Sacrifice get ported?

or Persona 4 Golden. There's no better console for that.

It was the best multimedia device of its time.
Music, videos and games all on the same device.

I love my vita!

Game wise, for me

PSP was a good console, against a spetacular console

Vita is fucking mediocre, against a very strong console

I thought the PSP vs DS was a very interesting competition because while DS sold like the goddamn PS2 and had a fucking good library, the PSP was also quite robust and had a very good library too. But man, Vita dropped the ball hard. From lack of games to fucking gimmick touchpad shit and even more fucking horrendous ports like Revelations 2 and Borderlands, fuck this shit. The retarded expensive memory cards didn't help at all too. It's a shame because the hardware is pretty damn sexy, as is the OLED screen from the 1st model.

It took far less time for piracy to function on a PSP. It was god's perfect emulation machine at the time, too.

Game dev here.

The PSP was an absolutely beautiful, elegant machine to program for.
It used a version of the PS1's processor, which was already at that time very heavily documented. For an entirely new system, that's a fucking godsend. That NEVER happens.
Half the time, when we get a new dev kit for a brand new console, you're lucky to get a piece of paper telling you how to turn the damn thing on, especially a Sony console. The first few months of development on any new console is literally just learning how to get a triangle to show up. That's it.
With the PSP, we already knew a good 2/3rds of the thing, because 2/3rds of it was literally a PS1. Development on a console hasn't been simpler before, or sadly, since. Getting a proto Vita devkit for the first time was the biggest letdown of my career. Fucking everyone knew Sony laid a big fat steamy one and learned NOTHING from the PSP the second we cracked it open.

Thing even had Ape Escape and Medievil sure it wasn't as good as the original but the effort counts there.

Where do you work? Can you give more detail of your experiencie with the devkit?

you're right, they improved on the PSP in every single possible way

especially the analog sticks and overall feel of it in your hands

>PSP was a multimedia player back when smartphones hadn't yet exploded like today
>PSP had some big name western games like GTA
>PSP was cracked from extremely early on which helped hardware sales incredibly

>sold 82 million
>i only knew one person who had it

The JP version of the PSP was wide open from day 1.

I remember using the PSP's web browser when I was 12 to begin my journey into porn/newgrounds/eventually Sup Forums et al. Between that and 90s Squaresoft games 9/10 handheld desu

>tfw i spilled beer on my psp and now it wont turn on

feels bad bros should i buy a vita and hack it?

I don't now, but at the time, I worked for Rockstar, and I worked directly on Liberty City Stories and a little bit on Vice City Stories

True story: The PSP was, in fact, SO elegant to program for, LCS was originally going to be a 1:1 port of GTA3, just something relatively easy and mindless to build experience on the system.
Thing was, it was SO easy and mindless, we came in MASSIVELY under budget and under deadline, so we decided fuck it, let's see how far we can push this thing. And a new game (on the old map) was born.

The Vita was exactly the opposite. The ARM processor was buried under a full layer of bullshit that took us a while to figure out was entirely for the purpose of porting from the PS3. You literally had to program a PS3 game to develop anything for the Vita, except the Vita also required a bunch of special concessions, so it wasn't like you could copy/paste an entire game, like you could from the PS1 to the PSP. The thing was designed by committee in the worst way.

Memory cards 100%

because the psp is easily hackable and supports microsd cards

Superficially? Absolutely. On the surface and on paper, the Vita was a strict upgrade.

Internally? Fuck no. It was a fucking nightmare.

There's evidence of this around, too. Remember the Bioshock project that was announced with the Vita? Remember how it was quietly shuffled off into oblivion, never to be mentioned again?
I'll bet you a million dollars that whole project was concieved before anyone at 2K got a chance to look inside the Vita, and the whole thing just kinda deflated like a poorly rigged circus tent the second they actually did. A lot of projects quietly died that way.

Monster hunter.

This
My dad said he would buy me one, but I was on my own when it came to getting games for it. Still have it now after 7 years or more years, and I've bought 1 game for the thing

Ive never put a single umd in my psp
Feels Good to be a pirate

PSP had games

this one is filled with weeaboo crap and indies

literally a waste of money if you're not into these genres, there's absolutely nothing to play in it (and most multi plats are already on PS3/PS4)

>be pirate
>still a sucker for physical media so I'm constantly buying shit
All I have to say us Soul Sacrifice is shit and I regret the $8 I paid for it.

have fun

Can this fucking thing be hacked yet?

Yes.

Easily/safely?

Not entirely, you're fucked if your thing has the latest fw, and it isn't as easy as it sounds to downgrade... it's a pain in the ass to properly hack it right now on latest fw

and finding one in a hackable fw is getting more and more expensive...

>tfw my buddy tells me to buy it when i got my Vita to play with him
>It's been 3 years and we still haven't played yet

No.
Unless you're at a safe fw of course, just like the 3DS

>No Man's Sky
I stopped reading right there holy shit

>go to website
>it installs
>done
Just be warned you need to reinstall it of you turn it off. It's an antibricking measure. Of course people already released fake vpk dumps that brick your vita out of sheer spite.
Also this getting mine was a pain in the ass but luckily I got it for less than two 32gb memory cards.

The biggest reoccurring theme of Playstation Experience 2016

>Coming to Playstation 4 and ...

>mfw disconnected wifi and automatic updates on 3.60

That works for me, means I don't have to get the bloodborne box.
Will definitely get it once I can hack it, next order looks much better on it with its QOL improvements over the vita version.

Which is better as a portable emulation machine, Vita or New 3DS?

This dude was supposed to save the Vita an now he's the king of the newest Vita meme. It's like they're already going to announce a successor.

>Coming to the PS4 and.... Vita's BRAND NEWREPLACEMENT the PSP2

Psp.
The other two are mainly for their own library.

>portable emulation machine
if its just for emulation, get a cheap psp

Vita, if that microSD adapter ever materializes

Potential handheld AAA machine became "that machine which is relatively easy for people who can draw but can't code to develop for"

Half are VN and VN aren't games. And before the delusional guy came, no 3DS is not filled with VN trash like this shit

Bad memes caught on quick and gave it a bad rap.

Also Sony gave up on it as soon as cod didn't sell millions.

I hope it does, microsds are smaller than the vita memory cards and fuck paying $120 for 64 gigs. That's more than I paid for the console itself.

Vita.

Don't get a PSP. You'll be lucky if you can find one with a battery that isn't shot and the only ones you can buy anymore are shitty chinese ones

The vns have always been there. A good chunk of the ones you're thinking of are even ports from the PSP as well. Only difference is the fact that some actually made it over because Sony dropped support for anything else.

Psp can do over 8 hours playing ps1 games
Vita can barely do 6 with that big ass screen

I have one of those, what are you guys talking about?

no you don't

I have an adapter in my PSP that fits two microSD cards. I can't remember the highest it supports, but I think I have a total of 64GB in there.

I still remember the day I installed sony vegas to export some of my fav porn to my PSP, can't believe that eventually got me to work as a video editor, good times.

>Sony could have beat Nintendo to the Switch idea of having a portable that could be played on your HMDI TV as well

>They instead decided to Jew everyone hard with overpriced memory cards and removed the HMDI out from the prototype so they can make you buy the Vita TV instead

Oy vey

We are talking about the vita memory adaptor someone said they were working on since August iirc.

Whoop, I can't read. I was so confused.

Nah we're talkin bout vita here, you're talking about microSD for MS Pro Duo

>tfw you booted up an emulator on the psp for the first time

So I just checked and my vita is on 3.60. That's good, right?

That's the one.
Don't update that shit.

Yes. Make sure to turn off automatic updates and head over to

>tfw using the psp 1000 as a universal remote everywhere

Won't do. So free games are possible on the thing. Neat.

Oh I'm incompetent when it comes to shit like that. I have a good friend though who does it for me.

>sony cameras

As if that makes a difference. They were still relatively expensive. Not vita card expensive but still more than sd cards.

>Extreme Vs Force
Enjoy your not online.
>Gundam Breaker 3
Enjoying the Funnel users crashing your game?
>SRW V
Ew, why would you play that on a shit portable?
>Skullgirls 2nd Encore
Just get the PC or PS4 version senpai

Also why did you list things twice? Are you that desperate?

Physically impossible. At least it won't fit inside the system. If it's taped to the back or dangling, that might work. The difference in size is so miniscule that mankind can't make a plastic case thin enough.

But do you know anyone? My whole neighborhood had one.

Beats the alternative.

Also Disgaea 4 while there are slowdowns in the upper levels of item world is probably the best version of the game since it also comes with all DLC/full package and it just looks gorgeous.

The PSP was basically dead outside of Japan for the second half of its life. Vita inherited that market and rubbed salt in the wound with stuff like the proprietary memory cards and lack of backwards compatibility for people who didn't buy digital regularly.

That, and Nintendo cutting the price of the 3DS by a third before the Vita launched cut into its ability to seem like a good bargain.

Honestly all it needed was Monster Hunter. Japan would've supported it much more over the 3DS. Goddamn Sony is a fool. Now that the Switch is on the way I don't even have to wait for Sony anymore.

How much should I buy a used vita for? Does it work well for remote playing the PS4 or PS3 ? Pic unrelated

Proprietary memory cards and no good games.

It is only useful if you like weeb games. That might work in Japan, but it won't work well for the rest of the world.

they became cheaper much faster because of that

>Wipeout 2420
Here's your (You)
At least spell your shitpost correctly.

I wonder if people would write an emulator for the Vita in order to play Persona 4 Golden

I own three PSPs and they all work fine. But getting an official battery pack is expensive.
PS3 remote play is useless because you can't play games.

PS4 remote play is sketchy because there's always a bit of lag.

Because it was shit?

fuck you and your fake list.

Why haven't the mods ban your falseflagging ass already?

To me, i think it's because they changed way too much from its predecessor, and that Sony never managed to use it to its full potential. Regardless, i'm still getting one, if its on sale.

Plenty of good games, just no Pokemon or children, and phones.

Why did the 3DS sell so shit compared to the DS?

The Switch is gonna get fucked by the PS4 the very same.

psp had ps2 games on the go like disgaea and, you know, freaking monster hunter, the vita is from the playstation nogaems era starting on the ps3. It's fucking obvious

Monster Hunter was never popular in the West.

Hearing this depresses me. Why would Sony just do a total 180 and fuck themselves over?

You could also buy 3rd party micro sd card adapters for it. The Vita memory card is almost the same size so adapters are either impossible or are external ones which suck shit.

Dude, when i first hacked my psp, i was a fucking king at school. Though, desu this was at the time when Pro CFW was out, so everyone was just a fucking retard i'm guessing.

Probably because that's still about 1% of Earth's population.

well, if we're talking normalfags, the psp also had hugely popular stuff from the ps2 like death jam and, uh, others?

There was an article about that exact thing about a year or so back, but I can't seem to find it now.

The TL'DR goes a little like this, though

>Team of engineers
>Design the Playstation and the media format, designed from the ground up for infinite scaleability.
>They design the Playstation and the Playstation 2 AND the PSP around this concept
>Team gets old, team members leave, get replaced by a new, younger, less experienced team.
>Team 2 goes all "FUCK YOU, OLD MAN! WE DON'T NEED YOUR FUCKIN INFINITE SCALABILITY! IT'S ALL ABOUT THE POWER NOW
>New team designs the PS3 and the Vita, and completely toss any and all old design philosophies, on a matter of principle.

That's the long and short of it.

This is the real reason. The Vita is actually a really great piece of hardware and fun to use but fuck these 60 dollar memory cards. Sony got what they deserved for this thing.
