They made you choose from a generic character and most guides on how to create characters involve dowloading and learning how to model clotes and textures and is hard as fuck!

Yeah and I downloaded the extra software that tutorials told me and no way, I would have to put days of effort in order to create the character the way I want it.
And even then, most tutorials are made about specfic subjects and ways of designing characters, not how to make my own original design.

What you are describing is Second Life but it's not nearly as cool as you think it can be. The current playerbase consists entirely of furries, tumblr trannies, middle aged folk wanting to be young and hot again and BRs thinking it's Tinder.
There's also folk from Sup Forums and Sup Forums in general but they are mostly furries or fit in the other categories.

The plot involves a town in which a lot of weird stuff happens, like the Twilight zone.
