>F5

Nothing wrong with it.

Unless you mean actual save scumming, i.e. bypassing permadeath in a roguelike by making a backup of the save file. In that case kill yourself amd then git gud.

>not F1 and F2

Don't be a cheating faggot. It's that simple.

>Cheating on a fucking screen toy.

where's the line between save scumming and not save scumming?

Savescumming = cheating

No exceptions.

Guides = cheating

Let's Plays = cheating

Asking Sup Forums what to expect = cheating

It's really fucking simple if you're not a brain-dead retard.

>max payne.jpg

just use the duel barretas dude they're legit the strongest gun

the shotguns are so ass

It should be illegal to make a video game in which the shotguns are garbage.

There is no obvious line, but tapping F5 every time you finish a fight or before every single dialogue is definitely save scumming. I impose a "5 saves per level" rule while playing Deus Ex. It encourages me to be smarter while playing and I almost never hit 5 saves anyway.

Play games that auto-save and don't allow manual saving/reloading.

If the devs didn't want you to savescum they wouldn't give you the option to quick save/quick load.

It's there to make sure the women and retard normies can make it through the game.

You don't, sadly. Saves are broken in Quake.

I thought that's what difficulty levels were for. Normies probably wouldn't even know how to find their quick load key.

>kys
>roguelike

Clever.

They need to be given the illusion that they're good players. Keeps them playing.

Can keyboard even break like that?
I use my cheap one in place of hammer and shit sometimes because living in a country where hammer need license sucks, but it still work.

Please explain how to beat Elder Scrolls: Arena without save scumming? If you can't, you are doing fine :)

Play real roguelikes.

Quick saving ≠ cheating

Reloading to do shit differently = cheating.

Reloading to scum randomization = cheating

> hammer need license
wat
seriously, wat

BAN ASSAULT HAMMERS

No it isn't you fucking retarded faggot, it's an ingame mechanic. Cheating is using either console commands or mods that make you more powerful in some way, shape or form.

So it's ok to save the game but it's not ok to load it after you died? Pretty hardcore approach there mate.

>not playing quake and doom pistol start ironman

>Believes there is a pistol in Quake

That is what I meant. You can't savescum even if you wanted to. You can't save at all.

The only time it's okay to savescum is when you die from RNG bullshit and there is no ingame way to recover.
This includes all roguelikes.

pistol start is just shorthand for default equipment every level
like in blood it would be pitchfork start but its easier to just say pistol start
also im pretty sure quake ports have saving

This. Save-scumming is acceptable in repetitive games to avoid death, but not to change the overall outcome of the game in your favor (unless, of course, you get into an unwinnable situation that's equivalent to death).

For example, I think it's perfectly acceptable to save-scum in the middle of a boss fight if it's going well. I don't want to repeat the same part of the fight 100s of times.

However, suppose the boss drops some shit after he dies, and it's randomize upon his death. Save-scumming right before he dies, and re-loading to get better drops is not acceptable.

Good roguelikes wouldn't have this happen. It's almost always preventable.

Who plays a Quake port? The only true way to play it is the 1.01 release. Anything else is for wimps who can't handle the game.

Would you consider Trap Quest to be a good rogue-like? That is the only one I know.

how are you gonna play quake custom maps then

Play modern games or console games.

Something I've noticed hanging out in the PCfat crowd is how little they will engage in a game on its own terms.

First thing you gotta do is download a graphics mod, without playing the game first, and then complain that your Goytax 970 can't handle it at 1440p 144Hz.

Designated save areas? That's console cancer, why should I start the stage from the beginning, I'll just F9 that shit so I didn't lose anything at all.

Aside from this, they don't really play video games much. Any online game besides the memes like CSGO and TF2 or whatever the latest WoW Killerâ„¢ is are barren wastelands. Even "iconic" PC games like Crysis.

I still prefer to play on PC because of the increased performance and the ability to use whatever control I feel works best for whatever game (wheel, arcade stick, bone, piss, m+k, etc) but I don't like the community. If I never go to a LAN party again I'll be fine.

don't worry - industry have you covered

Quake custom maps are garbage. The original game was the only good thing.

I don't know if it's good, but it looks like it actually has the qualities that it a roguelike (unlike other indie games masquerading as roguelikes).

now you're just being retarded

Sorry, I like replaying E4M6 more than whatever mess of textures that thing is. It doesn't even feel like Quake anymore. Inb4 it has scripted cutscenes.

>Reloading to do a fight better.
Why not?
What's wrong with a self-set challenge like
>beat this boss without taking damage
If I enjoy a boss fight, I repeat it as often as I like. If I don't enjoy it, I savescum past it.
Nothing wrong with playing my games the way I like.

Using a save for anything but quitting the game to do something else is savescumming

>not playing roguelikes on server through telnet/ssh clients exclusively

>Nothing wrong with playing my games the way I like.

Okay. You're still cheating.

Example:

You get a better weapon drop for killing the first boss without taking damage.

If you take a hit, too bad. Kill the boss and claim your subpar reward. Better luck next playthrough.

Sup Forums will do anything to justify cheating.

Guides, walkthroughs, Let's Plays, and asking Sup Forums what to expect also count as cheating. Even for collectibles or achievement hunting.

Any loading that manipulates in-game RNG is save scumming. If the load is exactly same with same conditions, then it's just a retry.

Example:
loading at an in-game casino so you may land a jackpot with less money spent is save scumming.
loading at a slot where you got your ass kicked by a boss is not save scumming.

Agreed, but only if you gave it 100% and died. If you're down to 200 HP and give up, that's savescumming.

thread should have ended here

Oh.

>NOT CHEATING
Reloading to correct a misclick during dialogue.
Reloading to catch dialogue you missed (so long as you pick the same choices).

If you're trying to worm your way around one of these rules, you might as well be cheating.

the only time save/reload is cheating is when the game does not give you the means to do so and you use an external method. If it's an intended part of gameplay, it's not cheating.

>Reloading after dying.
The time you waste catching up (password screen, backtracking etc) are punishments so you will be more careful next time, being able to just quick load everytime you die takes away the weight from a death, it just becomes a minoe inconvenience

I agree.

If the developer gives you the option, though, I feel like it's legit to use it.

Even if you're a pussy for doing so.

Some games are built for save scumming. Baldur's Gate comes to mind.

What if I reload to re-read a piece of dialogue that is otherwise un-re-readable and more or less key to the game?

And what about fast-forwarding via emulator or otherwise?

What about rewinding/reloading due to fast-forwarding too far?

What about manual start-scumming, such as getting better rolls at character creation but doing so within the game and not through save/load states? Are you honor-bound to make a concerted playthrough attempt with your garbage character, or is it OK to suicide to start over?

What about secondary playthroughs where you know all the secrets the second time around?

>muh honor
it's a toy dumbass

only time i ever did this was with the Phoenix Wright games, losing only means mashing A to skip text so its not like you are getting smarter

though i do save anyways if i make mistakes through the way, the pressure and that feeling when you break the lock and heal your bar are wonderful

>emulating game
>quick save at some point
>never do it again, forget about it
>make a huge progress through the game on your own
>accidentally click the quick load button
>your save file and all your progress are now gone
>lose the willpower to keep playing and never touch the game again

Emulating a game while using save states outside of convenient saving when you stop playing is okay, but you're a major faggot outside of that.

Why the fuck do you care what people think about you playing singleplayer games?

>Loading when you're about to enter pure skill mode
youtube.com/watch?v=6CMTXyExkeI

>What if I reload to re-read a piece of dialogue that is otherwise un-re-readable and more or less key to the game?

Not cheating.

>And what about fast-forwarding via emulator or otherwise?

Cheating.

>What about rewinding/reloading due to fast-forwarding too far?

Still cheating.

>What about manual start-scumming, such as getting better rolls at character creation but doing so within the game and not through save/load states?

Definitely cheating.

>Are you honor-bound to make a concerted playthrough attempt with your garbage character, or is it OK to suicide to start over?

Nope. Not okay. Cheating.

>What about secondary playthroughs where you know all the secrets the second time around?

Cheating never makes you a better player. It's always better to play legit, especially on repeat playthroughs.

Wait...wait...wait. What about in a Doom PWAD where there is a lengthy damaging floor section that is impossible to progress past because you lost 10% health and it takes 90% to cross? Say this is MAP17.

Look user, you can cheat at video games if you enjoy it. Just label it for what it is.

Attempt it, fail, die, start level over. Or cheat. Just because you dislike the label doesn't make it true.

Definitely cheating, but that's poor game design.

So there are people that really think it's ok to lose hours of progress or have a unexpected/unwanted result because of ONE choice in a single player game?

so hardcore xD

It's autism defined
>Play for hours, one choice ruins some outcome
>hurr you have to play all those hours again doing the exact same shit you've already proven you can beat

I can't stand repeating the same shit I've already done. I will save-scum all I want; deal with it.

What about a game without levels? A perfect example, Daggerfall. An enemy can hit you at any time and poison you. This poison doesn't show up immediately, but takes a bit of time to show up and kill you. There is very rarely a way to cure it.

Daggerfall also has a tendency to break. If you don't reload a save, you might have a quest chain permanently break to the point that it is impossible to complete the game.

How about a broken dungeon that is literally impossible to get to the quest object? Those exist as well.

Retards.

>have a unexpected/unwanted result
>ruin some outcome

The whole point of playing RPG games is that your choices have consequences.

Say the wrong thing with the right intentions, and get fucked for it? That's life.

Move the fuck on. You can make a different choice at that spot when you replay the game.

Nah but save scumming to trivialize all challenge in action games with short levels is pretty gay.

how can I stop save summing on this game?

>You get a better weapon drop for killing the first boss without taking damage.
Chances are hes not playing Lord of the Fallen. What about only doing it just for the fun of doing it?

>Guides, walkthroughs, Let's Plays, and asking Sup Forums what to expect also count as cheating. Even for collectibles or achievement hunting
Calm your fucking autism m8.

>An enemy can hit you at any time and poison you. This poison doesn't show up immediately, but takes a bit of time to show up and kill you.

Alright. When you die to poison, reload your last save. Big fucking deal.

>Daggerfall also has a tendency to break. If you don't reload a save, you might have a quest chain permanently break to the point that it is impossible to complete the game.

So reload your save? If the game's bugging out, you got no other choice. That's not cheating.

>How about a broken dungeon that is literally impossible to get to the quest object? Those exist as well.

Again, reload your save and hope it doesn't break this time.

It's not cheating if the game is fucked up.

RPGs are exempt from that desu because they are always designed and balanced with frequent saves in mind. The levels in fps games on the other hand are obviously not only meant to be played in one go but also replayed a bunch of times until you master them. It honestly depends on what the devs intent was.

>hang out with people that identify as such
>expecting anything but raw cancer
anyone that identifies themselves strongly by what system they play as is going to be unbearable

My rules aren't law. There's nothing wrong with cheating if you're just fucking around.

Call it what it is, though.

Fuck.

I don't know where to draw the line with multiplayer games.

It makes sense to use guides while playing MMORPGs.

It doesn't make sense to use a wiki while playing Dark Souls, despite it having PvP and shit.

If the game allows you to save prior to a fight, how is it cheating to reload said save? Because you say so? How is it not cheating to save at all by that logic?
>You died? Too bad. Better luck next playthrough

I can agree with most of what you said but if you seriously think wanting to do a fight better and restarting from the beginning of it is cheating, and yet you're fine with what ever you arbitrarily decided on as "not cheating" you have autism to assert it on anyone else.

Is there a reason no game has a cooldwon for quicksaving?

I imagine a self made version it would be something like bind quicksave;unbind, maybe make the rebind button further away.

Don't do it.

There you go buddy.

>Reloading to catch dialogue you missed
Absolutely unacceptable. It's your fault if you missed dialogue.

I'm not asserting fuck all.

This is what I consider cheating.

Reloading to do a fight better trivializes the challenge.

Example:

You fucked up on that boss? Used too many magnum rounds? Oh well. Hope you find some in the next area.

As opposed to:

"Fuck! I used too many magnum rounds. Better reload my save so I can fix my mistake!"

How is that not cheating?

>That's life.
>Discussing video games
Tips fedora*

This

Shit happens. Family gets in the way. Girlfriend calls. Dog needs to be put out. Game glitches and the audio cuts out with subtitles disabled.

If it's implemented by the devs, it doesn't count as cheating. Cheat codes are the exception to this obviously.

I tried to play a MMO without a guide. Everyone yelled at me and told me I wasn't welcome. Couldn't get invited to anything. There needs to be an exception Sup Forums.

>How is it not cheating?
Responding to the rest of my post will answer that question. I'll even repeat it here :
"How is it not cheating to save at all by that logic?
>You died? Too bad. Better luck next playthrough

I can agree with most of what you said but if you seriously think wanting to do a fight better and restarting from the beginning of it is cheating, and yet you're fine with what ever you arbitrarily decided on as "not cheating" you have autism to assert it on anyone else."

But what if there are zero clues, like when to use the altar in Trap Quest?

Too bad. Read the dialogue next playthrough. I'm not sure why you're trying to justify cheating. Miss hearing something because you weren't paying attention? That's life. Move the fuck on. You can listen at that spot when you replay the game.

Anyone who claims they don't save scum in stealth games is a liar.
