No we have publishers buying out all the decent developers to compromise their creative capacity for a higher profit margin and consistent annual releases instead of allowing a real game to be written, directed, designed with a unified effort from a small team over a long period of time. Instead we have huge development teams filled, no doubt, to the brim with useless parasitic bureaucrats, and comprised of thousands of individuals pumping out worthless content and ideas, it's nothing but rehashed pulp without any actual meaning.

Indie developers are too self-absorbed to produce anything with any actual fidelity and instead produce games predicated on exploiting 2D sprites for nostalgia-tripping consumers and massively reducing production costs rather than banding together to make an actual modern game because they're too unwilling to compromise their creative posturing as an individual developer. When and if they do make a successful game they sale out to a publisher and the shit hash cycle begins anew.

Basically the medium is fucked, the end. Unlike film, writing, photography or painting you need substantial amounts of money and time to develop a real game, to write it, program it, model it, animate it, direct it, etc... You can't just pull shit out of your ass or you'll quickly find you're outside your depth in every direction. What we need is small team ethics with the ability to tap publisher support but without the overbearing assholes shoving decisions down the directors throat forcing heaps of compromises with the money. What we need is for developers to have the time to nurture their games into the market instead of pushing shit down the pipe.

Define a real game. If you aren't aiming for cutting edge graphics and don't need semi-famous VAs or a fuckton of marketing and bribed reviews games don't have to cost a ton. Look at Dragon's Crown, about four years (for a team of 21 people) and 1 mil. That's nothing, really, a film that costs 1 mil is considered low-budget. And all of Vanillaware's games are along the same lines; when they received funding to remaster Odin Sphere (originally just meant to be an art upgrade and some extra content) they were given so much due to Muramasa and Dragon's Crown fame they rebuilt the game from scratch.

Games don't have to be stupidly expensive and don't require huge armies of code-monkeys. The problem isn't that games are so ridiculously expensive, it's that fuckwit devs and pubs for the most part don't understand how to budget and keep their god damn house in order.

It won't happen if you keep supporting indie games, you need to pirate everything for it to crash. Believe it or not I fucking guarantee the greedy jews over at the major gaming companies pay these indie developers and invest in them heavily, because they know indie devs are much more willing to put Politically motivated messages in their games. They win either way its a win win for them if you buy indie games.

Almost every normie I've talked to about IW wasn't really pissed about IW they were more pissed that the game they actually wanted MW remastered was in an $80 bundle with IW. The other ones were pissed about how sick they were of futuristic shooters which is a common opinion it seems seeing how successful Battlefield 1 was. I don't think that you can purge them all, given how many people willingly hand over their dollars for map packs, loot crates, cosmetic dildos, 1 hour DLCs, and so forth. Keep in mind that Kamitani has described Vware's team as being basically all artists. They likely have separate side projects going, maybe even other jobs, porn commissions, whatever. Problem these days is people (particularly in the west) just can't comprehend such ideas.

The reason the large quantities of those games exist in the first place is that as games have become more and more expensive to make, the largest companies in the industry have focused their pipeline onto AAA and "games as a service" so hard that devs that would have been employed on other projects 5 years ago are now adrift and need to find some sort of self-employment, making games with far less budget, exacerbating the barbell effect between heavily safe AAA investments and games with eyes bigger than their stomach, their ambition unable to be satisfied by an indie budget.

We're not looking at a surge in indie developers with either positive or negative connotations; we're really looking at the speedy death of the AA games or B games made by major studios which were prevalent in the PS2 era, ones with experimental concepts but also a budget that could only be provided by a larger company. In the current pipeline, it would be impossible to make a Katamari Damacy or a Viewtiful Joe, hell, I'd say that even Mirror's edge would be impossible, Catalyst only existing because as a sequel it could be sold to investors as "a safe bet." The game industry is facing the exact same issue as the Movie industry, where the more budget a project gets, the less risk the company makes. Indie devs are simply the people dispossessed by this style of development.

As cathartic as it may be for you to place the blame on the Phil Fishes of the world, Indie devs are a symptom of the state of the games industry and not the cause.
