Do you miss small filesizes Sup Forums?

Do you miss small filesizes Sup Forums?

what a fun game that was
shame about no decent sequel
and yes i do miss small file sizes

yes
the 30gb+ meme needs to die as soon as possible

>new game
>600 mb
>Its bigger than my hard drive

Man that felt bad

Forza Horizon 3 is like 50 GB+ with updates. Hard drives sizes aren't keeping up.

Yeah, uncompressed 7.1 voice tracks in 10 different languages are more important though

Nah, my gaming drive is 1tb and I uninstalled games once I'm done with them.

Yeah I miss when devs weren't lazy fucks because they have terabyte hard drives to work with

>oh no, I'm gonna have to download the game for TWO hours! What can I possibly do in the meantime?

You're telling me you don't have a single game to play while your new game downloads? Or that your hard drive is so small you can only have ONE game?

Capcom's the one that started this shit by leaving audio uncompressed, then bragging about filesizes as if that was a positive, right?

Oh wait, EA.

Nothing to do with lazyness, but uncompressed audio files. It puts less pressure on the CPU if the file is uncompressed.

It's not lazyness, it's just trying to do your best with what you have. And it's not like 1tb HDD cost nothing a lot these days.

>tfw can't upgrade to SSD because file sizes are too large and too cheap to buy 2 drives

Getting sick of pre rendered cutscenes that have gameplay graphics (don't even get me started when they are sub 1080p) & uncompressed audio in 20 languages

I used to hate huge files when I was a poorfag living in the middle of nowhere with shitty internet, but now that I can afford more storage space and I have decent internet it's less of a problem. But I still think games artificially inflating their filesizes to deter pirates is lame.

>he doesn't download fitgirl repacks

There's no way they include all languages. You'll get different sets of languages in different countries. Some games don't even have English language in Spain to stop cheap exports.

halo 5 is 97 fucking gigabytes on xbox one

>play a game
>now have to deal with 200 ping

Console CPU's are pretty slow as well as the 5400RPM HDD's in them

So devs use uncompressed audio to put less stress on the CPU & pre rendered cutscenes to hide loading

This was fine in the early PS3 days & Sony's first party did this shit to get around PS3's limits, but now with a focus on digital download, it's a massive pain in the ass

Don't forget those texture files you need so you can enjoy your 4k monitor also take up more space
In America you get pretty much every language option the game will get.

>lives in Somalia
>complains about bad ping
Not to mention you can simply play a singleplayer game for two hours.

>Buy FFX remaster on Vita
>6GB for both games
>Look at FFX remaster on Steam
>40GB for both games

Deter pirates would be the last reason to make a game iso/pack larger.

For example, God of War 3 needed to be huge because they wanted to combat the PS3 slow BD load times AND save HDD space (Sony devs always used the HDD as a crutch for the BD speeds). So they placed certain assets on the BD in multiple locations. Sounds, instructions, textures, etc. appeared repeated over the BD so instead of loading from 1000 points on the disc, it just had to load a few basic streams (that were never deloaded) then one stream for your current location.

>play singleplayer
>frequent disconnects from the always-online DRM server

That would take me 60 hours

>Buy 1TB HDD
>Barely fit a dozen games on it

Yes. I made a big mistake by buying a 500gb PlayStation. I have way too many games purchased that I can't download because of the lack of space.

The worst part is that I have like 60gb of free space and yet I cannot download, for example, the Mass Effect Andromeda demo that is a lot smaller than 60gb.

tfw back in my day 6.2GB download would take over 12 hours on the average connection

tfw a part of me finds it funny that you fags think 6.2gb is a small file size

If your internet is so shit that you get disconnected from single player games, that's not the devs fault but yours. Not to mention only a minority of games have always online DRM, and you can always pirate the others.
How the fuck? Where do you live? What's your download speed? If 30gb take you 60h to download, how long does it take to download a blu ray movie?

Pirating is illegal, user.

I live in rural England, my average download speed is 120kbs

Ive got 1tb and have 24 games installed and still have about 400gb left

I thought England had good internet wtf? I live in France and download speeds range from 10 to 40mb/s, 60-90 when on Steam. How much are you paying for yours? That's like 15 times less than what I had in Bulgaria 14 years ago.

£30 a month for unlimited, I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere and as of this we are not the highest priority. Everywhere else I have been has great speeds

On PC yes but consoles you often only get a few languages on the major games. I only have English and Russian language available on Watch Dogs 2 for Xbox One disc version.

In Canada I get 100mbs for $50 a month with unlimited data

>gears 4 is over 100gb
>literally could only store about 8 games that size on my 1TB hardrive (given the space taken for the OS)

I'm supposed to have sky fibre and yet my steam download speeds never go past 2.5mb/s
people meme about american internet but they still have better speeds than me

It really depends on where you are, rural areas tend to have poorer internet than towns and cities, mainly because most rural areas don't have fibre optic cabling yet and are still using coaxials or some shit.

Digital distribution is a fucking scam, you reap what you sow.

I saw this shit coming a mile away.

I live in Australia.
I miss being able to download a game in one day. I now takes me several, sometimes up to 5. I am going to die please send help.

>tfw finally got NBN the other day

I miss when Crapcast didn't give me a 1tb monthly data cap for my entire family

I might get mine this week but I am not holding my breath. Apparently they are running a pretty tight schedule and their technicians are spread really thin. This basically equates to fuck you wait another month ontop of the month you've already waited, on top of the YEARS you've waited.

If having to wait 50 hours to download a game has taught me anything it's patience. I'm gonna make it. Not really I want to watch Twin Peaks legally hurry up!

Optimising audio performance at a massive filesize cost is retarded though.
The GPU is the bottleneck, and the CPU impact is tiny anyway.

>SSDs make loading times effectively disappear
>can only have a handful of large games installed at any one time
>or have to constantly shuffle games between SSDs and HDDs
Won't be long before 512GB and 1TB or larger SSDs become affordable, let's hope games don't inflate to 300GB by then.

Console CPUs are ridiculously anaemic, especially in the updated models they're putting out.
You're right that the impact is insignificant though.

>buy 4TB HDD
>only have 450GB left.

>Oh let's play a new game today
>"UH OH user, LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE OUT OF SPACE! TIME TO PLAY SHUFFLE THE DATA AND FIGURE OUT WHAT GAMES YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY ANYMORE!"
>"GOTTA WAIT FOR THE DOWNLOAD FOR UHHHH..90 GIGS! WEW! AREN'T YOU GLAD YOU BOUGHT THE DISC VERSION?!"
>"WHOOPS, GOT A UPDATE IN THERE TOO. JUST 60 GIGS user, TIME TO DELETE MORE GAMES!"

I really enjoy the meta game of having to put aside 2-4 hours before I can start and having to fuck around in my system to make space because nobody knows what compression is.

DOOM 2016 just got a 32GB

>two hours
Maybe if Sony's servers weren't fucking garbage, I never get any more than 300KB/s from them.

update

>the Last Odyssey is like 25 gb
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

This was big when you still had the first standard 360 with a 20GB HDD.

1 system SSD, 1 large storage HDD and another SSD for games I'm currently playing. This setup has worked well for me so far. Also, it's a shame a decent internet connection isn't available everywhere yet

>6GB
>small

underage please go

>I want my games to look better
>But I want the file size to be smaller

Literally no game dev would do 7.1 voice tracks as dialogue is always in mono. ALWAYS!

I don't know of any EA game that has uncompressed audio either.

I don't know of any EA game that has uncompressed audio either.

There's been less than a handful of games that have actually used lossless audio (Black Ops 3 used FLAC) and only couple of games that I know of that used lossless uncompressed audio are Titanfall and Sacred 3.

Dying Light had 32-bit depth ADPCM but that's fucking rare to come across that bit depth for games and the quality is well above average.

Bound by Flame had 24-bit depth OGG vorbis files but again, rare for this to occur.

Majority of games use either FMOD, Audiokinetic Wwise or CRI technology. It's usually one of those three these days. Almost always they use a lossy compression codec for their audio (Vorbis/MP3 is most likely for FMOD, Wwise is almost always Vorbis, ADPCM being the next most common and then PCM but that doesn't really happen) and CRI uses HCA now.

6GB is small by today's standards

6GB was the average game size over 10 years ago. I remember getting BFME2 and being surprised how it was 5.5 gb in the mid 2000s. I installed it to a 20gb HDD

I don't know of any Capcom or EA (as a developer, not a publisher) games that used uncompressed audio.

>Being this fucking stupid
Yeah I don't get this fucking autism about uncompressed audio taking up space. Audio files are fucking miniscule. Even 5 straight hours of a WAV, in 10 languages would be anywhere from 2-5GB max. Some people are just that fucking dumb I guess.

Good luck, user. Hopefully it comes soon.

We lucked out with our installation desu, even though it was pissing down with rain that day, we got a 30 minute gap in it and the techs were already nearby so they managed to do it before it started raining again. Going from 400KBps average to a consistent 12MBps does magical things to you. I never knew how much more you can enjoy a game if you can actually play it when you get the urge to instead having to download it overnight and play once the urge is gone.

>downloading phantasy star universe took 5 hours to download on my shitty xbox 360.

good times, they really were.

...

Thanks dude, I'm really on edge about it now that it's so close. Heaven is within my grasp but it still feels so distant. Here's hoping right?

The thing is that Lost Odyssey is a 2007 game while New Order came out in 2014.

>I need to delete 10-30 good old games from my hard drive to make space for newly released shitty pseudo-movie games unless I go for a repack that removes 8 different languages audio files and do some proper file compression wizardry that devs forgot somehow in a single gen
At least you have repacks on PC, you can't even do anything about it on consoles
This is such a fucking bullshit, I have hundreds of XBLA games and dozens of regular games on my modded 1TB xbox 360, they just went full retarded this gen since consoles can finally have 1TB space officially.

Gears of War 4 is 135GB on pc.

If you can download at 15gb an hour you have better internet than the majority of the world.

I miss the concept of compression.

ITT console kiddies starting to feel the limits of their inferior system

You seem to know a lot about about game audio, do you have any idea what was going on with Dark Souls audio on the 360? A lot of sounds in the game sounded like complete ass unless I had my decent stereo system hooked up.

Yeah but you can play Lost Odyssey without needing a hard drive. External storage is required for some games if Xbox 360 Core owners missed out on the hard drive upgrade program.

Hard drive upgrade program?

>being this illiterate on compression

I think I recall Microsoft giving out hard drives when you put your Xbox 360 Core serial number in the website. The new software update needed to be on a hard drive because the firmware storage was limited.

Stop getting butthurt, game dev, he only said one generalized thing he didn't say how much of a lazy fucking nigger you are

Xbox 360 (and Xbox One) use XMA (Xbox Media Audio). If it's on Xbox, it's 99% (no really) likely going to be this codec because the consoles have dedicated hardware to decode it.

No idea about Scorpio yet though.

Side note: Sony followed this idea with the PS4 actually by having dedicated hardware for audio.

Which Dark Souls game exactly? 1, 2 or 3? They all used FMOD technology with the XMA codec. Music was all stereo, cutscenes were in 5.1 surround though.

>download xbox 360 backwards compatible game on xbox one
>50 mb game is now 1 gb because xbox 360 os included in every game

Dark Souls 1. It just stood out to me that through my tv speakers a lot of sounds sounded like complete ass, whereas with other games sure they wouldn't sound as good but they still sounded like what they were supposed to. I had heard somewhere that Dark Souls 1s textures were uncompressed or had too much fidelity or something, so I figured maybe the audio was uncompressed or something. I remember especially the bassy sound effects just sounding terrible through tv speakers.

I miss when esports was never a thing

damn how much you pay for the 500gb ssd

Doesnt it increase fps if you use less gpu power to decompress assets?

About $180, they are pretty cheap these days. It's a Samsung 850 evo.

Lol i had virgin media and it went 8.0 mb/s for me or more. And i payed 25 pounds a month

>my shadow of mordor folder is 50gb
>my just cause 3 folder is 50gb
>my titanfall 2 folder is 60gb
>my gta v folder is 70gb
>my emulation folder is 108gb
when will it end lads?

Audio was definitely compressed for DS1 and so were the textures. The game is under 4GB on PC and it's 3.8GB on Xbox 360.

Certain effects did have a lot of LFE and bass.

if you had one of the arcade models that came with a 256 mb memory card(or nothing at all) they would send you a new one(that was a bit bigger with the update already on it)

>6 gigs is small

Most old PC games were less than a gig...Doom is like 10mb...SNES roms are around 1 or less.

6 gigs is pretty damn big, current games are full retard huge.

>>I want my games to look better
Who are you quoting? Certainly not me.
Video games reached the peak of graphics in the era of PS2, everything else is excessive.

Wasnt lost odyssey like 100+ hours long?

NMS has done, at least, one thing right - it's 2,5GB on PC

I'd rather it was 5GB if it meant twice more asset variety instead of the same 3 planets over and over again

see? you are a problem here

I bought DOOM for the PC. what the fuck does it have to be 70 gb?

And the fucking digital edition on 360 makes you get the full download all at once instead of letting you download it per disc...but the game is shit anyway, so it's a moot point, I only played it because it was free, but dropped it hard when the forced stealth section showed up.

Tfw. I hope its a good game

ITS THE principal. They needn't be that big. Devs are just too lazy. Also with psn, that takes more than triple the amount of time
