Damn, you guys weren't kidding. The series does go downhill after X. I'm playing through all the games backwards right now and I just reached 10, and this is on such another level of quality than the later games. I went in with low expectations after playing XII, XII trilogy, and XV, but I'm so pleasantly surprised by how well-crafted and endearing the story and characters are. And supposedly the games before this are even better? I'm actually excited now; I was legit gonna give up on the series if X didnt make a good first impression.
Probably because the guy who created and directed every Final Fantasy from I to X quit after X. Then SE was all like "What can we do now that Sakaguchi quit? I know let's make a direct sequel to the last game, something that has never been done in the series long history, and then just shit all over Sakaguchi's legacy with fanfic tier writing." and it was all downhill from there.
