Piracy helps videogame sales

Piracy is actually good for video games, concludes European Union study.

>All available evidence suggests that the Commission actively chose to ignore the study except for the part that suited their agenda.
>In an academic article published in 2016, two European Commission officials reported a link between lost sales for blockbusters and illegal downloads of those films.
>On the contrary, in the case of video games, the study found the opposite link, indicating a positive influence of illegal game downloads on legal sales.

Sow what are you going to pirate now that it's actually beneficial to developers?

I've always pirated and if I find a game that's good I tell people about it and possibly buy it if my low income ass can afford to throw money at games.

Not much, probably. Most games I buy and have bought aren't/weren't pirate-able at the time of purchase.

>Study
Stopped reading right there

Pretty much expected.
I tend to pirate stuff as a sort of demo.
If I enjoy the game, I end up buying it even if I finished it before.
Usually wait for a sale.

Explain a better alternative.

I won't trust any of these studies if I were you. Most of them are funded by political groups to sway public opinion. And I mean by funded, I mean they are paid to purposely post whatever results the payer wants.

To what exactly? You have to be a dumbass to believe any journalist when they mention study. 11 times out of 10 they won't have a source or the study that they mention is completely flawed naturally.
I wouldn't be surprised if the "study", if it even exists, just points to sales of AAA games and an increase in pirating and just says pirating is the sole cause. I also wouldn't be surprised if the study at all stated the complete opposite and the writer just "accidentally" misinterpreted it.

here you go

If you guys are going to try to attack the sources, you actually have to click and read them. If you just start attacking them without reading anything, everyone can obviously see you have no clue what the hell you're talking about.

>the EU never shared the report—possibly because it determined that there is no evidence that piracy is a major problem
Woah...

Like global warming

And evolution.

can someone just give me the cliffnotes i hate reading

This is actually pretty much true since the people who aren't braindead try games out before buying them

CTRL+F > "video games"

>people actually believe that if they download some weeb indie game they are helping the dev

The worst part about these studies is no one ever cares about the why and in what way.

>Eurabian Caliphate being a bunch of shady socialist cunts

IMAGUN

MOI

SHAWK

>trusting headlines

Did any of you actually read the study?

If so, could you summarize exactly how they came to the conclusion that illegal game downloads had a "positive influence" on sales?

I'm not even doubting that it's true -- that's completely beside the point. I'm just wondering how they think they've determined causation. Proving it isn't as simple as finding a correlation. If they simply found that heavily pirated games also had high sales figures, I would argue that there's no causation between the two. Both piracy figures and sales figures in this case would be caused by the game's popularity, rather than sales being caused by piracy or vice versa.

Oh yea sure, keep putting your games DRM free on GOG, ill be sure to "buy them"

Report written by P.I. Rate so it's confirmed legit.

I believe the positive in video game piracy is in the absence of certain content in pirated copies, which lead to purchases afterwards, that's what they hint to in page 84, second paragraph.

>piratefags saved metroid

A lot of people actually will buy them, though.

They didn't reach the conclusion that piracy has a positive effect, only that the negative effect is non-existent or insignificant, except for new blockbuster movies.

is it any good guys?

The particle pictured in the original post specifically states that piracy has a positive influence on video game sales.

If what you're saying is true, then I suppose this is just another case of bad journalism.

>particle

Obviously I meant "article".

I'm actually not phoneposting so I don't know how that happened.

Yeah those billionaires surely bought this study so they could continue to get away with downloading games for free

Retards

Too bad this won't stop Sup Forums from constantly bitching about it and going
>t. poorfag
over and over.

Sup Forums shills on suicide watch

Well duh.

Most of the time you see the results of a study it has been carefully selected and manipulated to get the results that were desired. This shit is rampant in research of transsexuals, for example.

Obligatory:

>links some meme site
I've read the articles, the study didn't reach conclusions either way.
Faggots will latch on to anything. Just pirate, don't be gay.

if you're only going to pick a few words to read, at least let it be the whoooooole headline, instead of half

nice thanks for doing the things for me

>They suggest that this difference may be caused by vertical product
differentiation in the video game industry, since hacking a video game does
not allow access to the same content as a legally bought game

how often is the case to draw this kinda conclusion?

>one of the cited authors is named Bastard

lol

If it's a primarily multiplayer game and you can't access the same servers most players are on, I'd imagine that to be a great incentive to buy if you enjoy what's there. Even so I'd have to look at the 2012 study to form a conclusion based on the information given.

so what is the content in question? multiplayer modes? what about single player games?

There was a study a few years ago saying pirates, on average, purchase more shit than moralfags.

Moralfaggots BTFO! when will they learn?!

Um what? Go away and pick up the conversation, hun.

I was piratefag for over 15 years and I still buy games. Moralfags are retarded.

the issue is that its an incredibly grey area with so many factors in play that I do not believe that any study can properly prove or disprove piracies impact on profits.

Actually they can. You just choose to stick your fingers in your ears and go "lalalalalalalala"

>Actually they can.
lmao

i can see that being an issue for multiplayer games yeah

i dont see it. i see lists of movies but i dont see a list of games. does anyone see where its defined?

also women dont want to pay for games it seems

>women don't buy games
this surprises no one (but sjws (who will deny it anyway))

I always pirate games. I rarely buy them.

I'm saving the industry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What does P[x] represent here.

12/10 russian doctors agree that you should start smoking.

Since the P[x] add up to 100, it must be probability.

guys i dont know if this is a good study. i kinda dont think it is

Sure, it's some type of of prob but that doesn't tell me what we are really measuring. What does it mean when x=3 vs x=0.

Probability is a chance that something will happen. All probabilities add up to 100% chance, like for example the chance you'll pick 1 out of 4 balls. each ball is a 25% probability, 4*25% = 100%.

In this case, 100 = 100%, instead of 1.0. So 3 = 3%, 0 = 0%.

>hurr durr piracy are bad, we can't afford a black caviar and gold plated Bentleys anymore
Man those moneybags are tilted.

You obviously didn't read the 300 page study, retard. They literally say that game piracy has a positive effect.

Keep trying to justify it, but at the end of the day you're all still THIEVES.

>also women dont want to pay for games it seems
Well, they're used to having their entertainment paid for by other people who thank them for the privilege and compete over who can pay them more, so buying their own games is probably an alien concept to them.

The study hasn't been peer reviewed, they might have pulled numbers at random for all we know

Did you even read the article?
They funded the study, but it didn't say what they wanted so so didn't publish it. It only got out through a freedom of information request.

Once again proving the EU Comission to be nothing but corrupt criminals who would be lynched by their citizens if the citizens knew what was going on.

>Once again proving the EU Comission to be nothing but corrupt criminals
HOL UP!
This is a simple matter of facts for anyone in a position of power. A universal constant.
Don't like it? Well too bad, if you want to get rid of it then by all means, go provoke a global, no holds barred, nuclear biological and chemical World War because that's the only way you will get rid of it.
Or just kill yourself, there is no such shit in Heaven
>implying you'll end up there
