play gothic 1 first, you will either love it or hate it but you will benefit greatly if you play 1 first. The controls are easy to get used to after a while and the combat might seem clunky at first but thats because you aren't skilled in fighting and as you train your skills your swinging animation is better

Gothic 1 and 2 have an excellent combat system that's better than the majority of modern games,
it has enough of a skill ceiling that you can win any fight without taking a scratch though that will be unlikely, and armor in this game is actually functional.
