EOV especially has some pretty fun class combinations and the story events give it a cute charm. Music is generally well done as well.

Have you ever actually played Wizardry? It's nothing like EO. EO has a much better class/skill system that allows for better customization and class synergy.

anyone feel like the dungeon events take away from the imagination element? I wanted to have a bunny fuccboi with retard strength he is embarrassed of but every strength event makes the user seem smug about it much like how every Reflex event gives the character a "professional" or "cool" vibe

Because it's the only one to do it, and it does it in the most smooth way possible.
There's no other device out there other than the DS and 3DS that can handle something like it, it uses the dual screen functionality in the best way physically possible.
A near-flawless simulation of pen and paper crawlers without the pen and paper but a similar experience, and it's the only way to do it without resorting to irritating things like toggling every two seconds or a shitty minimap in the corner of the screen.
And the music, art, and solid battle system.

Strange Journey is also amazing for similar reasons. The DS just works really well with these types of games and I love it.

Really? I feel like it's been streamlined in that good way. It cuts the fat and the newer skill system is actually kind of nice, though it's a slog at the end of the second stratum waiting for the new skills. Some more portraits and more difficult FOEs would be nice, but the game seems pretty well balanced.

golem is immune to binds/ailments. You are supposed to trick it into fusing with bound/ailmented Golemlets to hold it off while you hit it with line/area attacks. Kill while paralyzed for conditional

Maybe use some spoiler tags for others' benefit user.

Also that conditional is dumb as hell.

ailment conditionals aren't really that bad except the obligatory "kill with curse damage" bullshit in every game. The ailment items are actually reliable finally so you don't need to rest when you go for refights

I've never played an EO game before starting EO4 about a week ago.
Should I finish it or is EO5 a straight upgrade and should I just play that instead?

No reason to not finish EO4 if you're enjoying it, it's not a bad game.

EOV is a return to a more traditional EO form with one bigass dungeon. By all means finish IV, especially since it's one of the stronger post-games in my opinion, and if you enjoy it consider picking up V.

There isn't one, at least as far as I've gotten. It's more of a call back to the original games, with all the focus on the main labyrinth, and some very well designed floors.

That's the point, 3 had a sea map as a sort of puzzle side quest, but 4 took it way too far and made it the central game mechanic. I want to traverse dungeons, not fly all over the place dodging massively overleveled FOEs farming food.

I kinda personally liked the overworld in 4, the side dungeons were a cute disconnect to add extra floors to dungeons while also keeping them separate. I can understand why someone wouldn't like it though.

Etrian has better gameplay than most of those others because it's made by the most talented turn based RPG company in the world.

Guild name has been Argonaut for the past ten years.

I think with the combinations of the side dungeons, each stratum felt the right size.

The first two Stratums definitely felt tiny though

And the fifth stratum was one fucking floor, plus all of the areas that are usually saved for Dragon backtracking.

Honestly only the Libraries were really good. But the Libraries were REALLY good.

Someone's done the math before and EO4 did end up having a significantly smaller amount of dungeon compared to past games.

I'll agree with the 5th stratum though, it was pretty lame. Post-Game Stratum is really good though imo, lots of backtracking but it felt meaningful and I liked the design.

An overworld sounds nice, but functionally it means they just took out floors and threw them elsewhere. This requires you to go back to town between each.

Its not the worst change, but it does break up gameplay. The game excels when you're in a dungeon for a long time, because TP becomes a limiter more than HP. Having a bunch of 1 floor side dungeons degrades this aspect.

I would agree with you if not for the fact that there's an abundance of shortcuts to the floor entrance and food pretty much negates a lot of those TP issues in V.

Basically what i use for now, seems okay. I swap out Pug for a Warlock if I really need more elemental damage

The first one if you want to abuse the Dragon Roar + Grave bullshit combo.

Second one is a lot more balanced, though I'd drop the Masurao for a Warlock. This is the first EO game where the default wizard class is actually good and scales well the whole game due to all of the multipliers, also it works well with a Chain Fencer and Shaman.
