It's a way of funding sustained development for games without expansion packs like Rocket League, and a way of paying for high budget AAA games without raising the base price. There is literally nothing wrong with them.

Matthew Brown
Matthew Brown

People still play farmville?

Xavier Long
Xavier Long

Yes, because multiplayer games make more money and companies have nothing to lose by adding lootboxes and microtransactions into their games. Just look at GTA 5, that game made 500 million dollars from the shark cards alone, so why wouldn't Rockstar and 2K add microtransactions into every game, when people will still buy their games whether they have or don't have microtransactions.

Joshua Turner
Joshua Turner

companies are anti-consumer! I'm the good guy here!
meanwhile none of this would've happened if piracy didn't exist
who's really to blame here?

Nicholas Collins
Nicholas Collins

It's so easy to blame piracy without ever backing up your source. Piracy is the result of the free market, free of copyright laws and anti-piracy legislation. You can't say piracy is bad because then you're arguing in favor of government regulation, the same regulation that people want for lootboxes.

John Gomez

And DLC makes no sense to be a result of piracy because it can be pirated as well.

Sup Forums is naturally contrarian, but the triple A company hate runs incredibly strong still, because these companies not only continue these practices but also double down on them.

I remember the paid mods Bethesda scandal , and there were definitely paid shills like now shitting up Sup Forums. After it was dropped they disappeared. I would say Sup Forums, of all the boards on Sup Forums has the most marketers, bots, and paid shills.

There were 2 threads up about the EA Star Wars fiasco, the first one was absolutely full of shills pretending like there's some kind of "debate" and the newer one was unanimously anti-EA, when the first one got archived the new one got flooded by shills too.
There's certainly organized foul play at hand.

Nah. They're a a product of the AAA industry requiring 100 000 000 fatbucks to make a game these days.

You can sell a million units of a game that costs 60 bucks and make a profit. It just doesn't work that way.

So they found a way to compensate for their financial loss, as (((they))) always do. And the good goy, the sheep and the normalfags eat it up because we need to see the end of Shadow of War, rite guiys? xD

Let the industry burn. I'm not giving (((them))) a dime.

Dylan Hall

Hot take; I'm completely fine with lootboxes ONLY, and only if they provide purely cosmetics, and said cosmetics are available thru 'grinding'. Some people are willing to pay for them, but they're not intrusive, and the devs get an extra revenue stream. Not P2W, not shoved in your face, etc.
Actually coming to think of it, Overwatch is prob the best example.

Overwatch is actually one of the best examples of lootboxes ruining a game.

game is shallow and easy so it's appealing to normies
normies then get hooked on lootboxes
you now made a profitable game that doesn't need good and lasting gameplay to survive

That's literally how mobileshit games work.

Brody Butler
Brody Butler

no, they are a result of inflation without the price of games increasing.

when the cost to develop a game has consistently increased for 15 years (at a rate higher than that of inflation, even) but the price of games has not, developers will be looking for ways to fill that void.

mobile games are also a massively growing market, and everyone is going to want a slice of that pie. Developers will still develop games for other systems if there is still a market for them though.

No, that's just an excuse publishers use to convince you to be angry towards pirates instead of being angry towards the greedy pieces of shit that put this scheme into the game. The problem is the greedy publishers who always want more and are never satisfied and the retards that keep buying these microtransactions/cut content ''DLC''/season passes

protip friend:
COST OF GAME DEVELOPMENT IS LOWER NOW.
you know how much a personal computer was 15 years ago? less than my i7 cpu, and guess what costs less? I even mean hard numbers not even counting fucking inflation.

a result of piracy?
are you retarded? its because people are willing to pay for shit. EA made a gorillion dollars on fifa and madden cash shops. gtav cash shop paid for the game 5 times over and counting. valve's casino sustains them so much they dont even make games anymore. before this everyone was rushing to milk the mmo cow, now that cow is dead and a new one took its place the cash shop cow. people will literally pay extra to NOT play video games, ubisoft games for example have "time saver" dlc and deus ex md let you buy skill points.

They are designed to cut development time in half. Think about it, before they would spend time trying to figure out how to get these items to the player in a balanced manner as to not adversely effect gameplay. Now that entire process is gone and they just dump items in the boxes for you to open. That time can be spent elsewhere, or not at all in some cases.

Stop buying games with microtransactions, period.

Brayden Miller
Brayden Miller

No. Lootboxes are no effort for a huge gain.
Normies and Whales are to blame for these things.
Even if piracy died off completely it wouldn't stop because the two groups that make these practices profitable would not stop(it would only get worse).

Game development doesn't need these things though. Cost and quality haven't gone dramatically up or anything.
Fewer, more heavily marketed games with microtransactions are simply a more stable investment.

Intellectual Property is real

David Lopez
David Lopez

Those are caused by whales and stupid corporate suits that don't understand how whales work.
Basically, most people don't spend a single cent on microtransactions in general, but the ones that do spend a LOT of money.
So yes, people will pay for it, but just very few people.
The problem is when you design the micropayment system assuming that you will somehow magically force everyone into paying for shit, as it's the case of most pay2win schemes and shit like ending on DLC etc..

Tyler James
Tyler James

Yes
Companies need to make more money off of their games to break even and with less people even buying their games they have to make more money off of those who do

Asher Young

Companies want money. Microtransactions give money. Players accept microtransactions.

That is all there is to it.

Gabriel Morris

It's the result of greed and too much money thrown into marketing.
