So

Did people hate Yooka-Laylee because people fucking hate 90s style 3D platformer collectathons and think they're fucking dated for today? Or was the game just a "bad 3d platformer collectathon"?

the latter, half the levels are empty

SJW agenda crap, they focus more on this than developing a fun game.

I know I posted this already but I'm not satisfied until I find out if people hate this genre or think its dated

It was shit.
>the best nostalgia pandering 3d platformer is a game made in one month for a game jam

A lot of people compare the "failure" of Yooka Laylee to the "success" of Hat in Time as proof that the genre is still alive, just that most of the games released are bad. I don't know how well or poorly either of them sold in terms of exact numbers, so I can't say either way.

Nintendo's bread and butter has always been platformers though (whether or not you like them). Saying that the genre is "dated" is pretty ignorant.

It was literally too low budget. Have you seen the ending of the game? All NPCs you meet during the game just stand around playing their generic animations, just like in the fucking main game.

just look at any review of the game, be it from a "videogame journalist" or general consumer, most of them will tell you what you need to know. Meanwhile, if you check reviews on A Hat in Time or Odyssey, you'll see what makes for a good modern platformer. YL is disliked because it's not a very good game; it's buggy, lacks polish, has poor controls, and suffers from empty levels and tacked-on minigames.
Who am I kidding, though, you just made this thread to bait shitposters into pushing the "platformers are dead" narrative, didn't you?

I'm not satisfied because I feel that people are ripping into my childhood genre and making me feel like shit because I loved Spyro as a kid. I cant look or think about any nostalgic 3dplatformer of my childhood now without thinking people hate it and don't want that shit back.

i love going behind a wall at the edge of the map and across a narrow ledge for a SINGLE QUILL when there are 200 per world. How the fuck do you mess up this bad. They're meant to act as breadcrumbs to new locations and jiggies. You shouldn't be actively going out your way searching for them

People hated it because they jumped on a bandwagon without realizing they didn't actually like collectathons.

That being said, as someone who loves the shit out of Banjo and even Donkey Kong 64, they shit the bed pretty hard with Yookah. I like the game, I think it's more fun than people give it credit, but there is a SEVERE issue with the sheer size of the stages. In Banjo, everything had a place - Mumbo had his house, there were little caves or houses or giant fish to explore that took you to unique areas.

Yookah is just a giant clusterfuck of nothing. Why is the not-Mumbo just out in the fucking open? Why couldn't she have a tiny lab or something nestled away where it makes sense? Why is Rextro's arcade cabinet just kind of... There?

>it was low budget
it really wasn't though

It takes the shitty Elements of old and modern games (empty maps and clunky controls)
Fuck off the political drama has nothing to do with why this game flopped

THE PAGIES
IN CAGIES

It was horribly unpolished and suffered from DK64's shitty minigame syndrome. The only aesthetically pleasing level is the casino and even that is empty as fuck.

It was either low budget or untalented devs. How the fuck is it hard to make the NPCs more alive by giving them some walking animations and make them move around a little? Even Banjo had this all the time.

I find funny how people were shitting on Hat on Time back then and praising Yooka but now they're praising the hell outta that game while shitting on Y-L.

I didn't fucking make this to bait anything. I'm in so much distress because I ACTUALLY THINK that people hate on 3d colectathons now and don't want them back!

I've only seen other people play it but it looks like it was just a very poorly managed project. There are individual bits and pieces that look good, but things start to fall apart when you look at the game as an entire experience.

It's like hiring a bunch of talented people and giving them confusing directions. Individual talent won't save the project.

>Have you seen the ending of the game? All NPCs you meet during the game just stand around playing their generic animations, just like in the fucking main game.
not that I want to defend YL, as it has shit level design and pales in comparison to actually good platformers like BK, but the same thing does happen at the end of BK when it shows you a reel of all the characters and enemies: they each play their idle animation, or use walking animation and just walk in place if they don't have an idle animation

>mfw even AHiT's soundtrack is better and it was composed by some literally who + guest tracks
How did they fuck up so badly?

>Who am I kidding, though, you just made this thread to bait shitposters into pushing the "platformers are dead" narrative, didn't you?
>"I'm in so much distress because I ACTUALLY THINK that people hate on 3d colectathons now and don't want them back!"
way to prove me right, you colossal faggot OP.

I hate that style of game, but I hated it back then too.

And at the end of Tooie they are playing soccer with Grunties head and it's fully animated. You would expect them to progress a little since then.

I REALLY wanted to like this game, I love 3D collectathons and I can get enjoyment out of just about all of them, but this game just wasn't good. It wasn't fun, the levels were way too big with barely anything in them, and the way they handled backtracking was particularly awful. The worst part of all was the way they implemented the special moves, you can fly anywhere in this game which totally negates the need to do any platforming whatsoever after you've unlocked it. It at least made sense in Banjo-Kazooie, because you had to complete a certain thing in a level to unlock the pads that let you fly. Here you can fly whenever from the get-go. The game looks fantastic but the gameplay was phoned in. I hope Playtonic does better next time.

LISTEN

I KNOW YOOKA IS SHIT FOR JUST BEING BAD!

I JUST WANNA KNOW IF PEOPLE HATE 3D PLATFORMER COLLECTATHONS BESIDES MARIO AND DON'T WANT THEM BACK!

BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE PEOPLE ARE RAPING MY CHILDHOOD!

BUT EVERYONE KEEPS TELLING ME A HAT IN TIME IS PROOF OTHERWISE!

its was a bad 3d platformer. compare the levels to banjo tooies levels. even banjo tooie seems good now.

YL has no clear points of interest of coherent design

I hate them and I don't want them back. They're fucking boring.

people hate it because it's shit. start dealing with it

>pay in game currency to unlock the full level
>the game was way too big with too much empty space before that
>the problem gets even worse

Because yooka laylee was bad yet after someone said that 3d platformers were dated every person touted that exact same point repeatedly. Then a hat in time came out and it was praised to hell and back despite being a 3d platformer.

YL was just not very good and 3d platformers outside of Mario are so rare that people automatically assume it's a dead genre not worth reviving. When in reality it's a fantastic genre that really needs some love, it's just somewhat niche if sales are any indication

This, it's because they fired JonTron from hsi vioice acting gig over his comments on black people, that's why the game is so hated.

>even banjo tooie
Reminder that Tooie is a much better game then Kazooie and that the only thing Kazooie has on it is a shorter playtime if you want to play through it a second or third time.

It wasn't Nintendo branded like Odyssey.

I agree. YK is way, way better than Mario Odyssey but the alt right had to sabotage the game. We need to delete Sup Forums and perma ban everyone who posts there.

It's a mix of journos being too retarded to understand it's supposed to be like BK, and people angry for the removal of Jon.
Game is fine, not as good as BK but not a blunder either.

It was shit. I played Banjo Kazooie recently and loved it. This felt so fucking lifeless and boring. Like they were just checking off boxes with no original thought or charm. Half the fucking appeal of these games is the charm involved.

A Hat in Time was much better but suffered from being WAYYYY too short. It was clear that they never really finished the game and just put out what they had to save themselves. It's unfortunate because it's clear it could have been a great game with more time or time better spent.

I'd still like to see a proper revival of this genre.

A Hat in Time is the only shitty one.

Not sure how anyone feels about Nitro Rad, but he goes into a lot of detail about the mechanics of platformers on what works and doesn’t and atleast tries to be fair.

Hat in time

you fucking nigger, listen, in every one of these threads you've been getting the exact same answer and I don't understand how it hasn't gotten through your thick mongoloid skull yet

People like collectathons, they just have to be good. Its always been this way, people just had more tolerance for bullshit in their collectathons back in the day. When a genre starts to age, mediocrity stops being acceptable.

I completely missed the Jontron drama and I fucking loved the game.
Kept bringing me back to the Banjo-Kazooie days.

This kind of shilling just makes people hate your game.
Stop.

This is correct, but there's also the fact YL is supposed to be like BK and BT, so the dated argument is incredibly retarded.

I thought the game was fantastic until world 2, and it just got worse from there. After my childlike glee in a new B&K wore off the cracks began to show very quickly.

>The only aesthetically pleasing level is the casino
what the fuck dude this is the absolute opposite of the truth

As a Banjo fan, I really liked YL.

Banjo Kazooie >>>>>>>>>> Yooka Laylee >>>>>>>>>> infinity >>>>>>> Banjo Tooie > trash > DK 64

dustinbragg.itch.io/yo-noid-was-ahead-of-its-time

It's because a Hat on Time kept JonTron in spite of his controversial statements on black people, and Y-L fired him over it.

>i love going behind a wall at the edge of the map and across a narrow ledge for a SINGLE MOON when there are 100 per world. How the fuck do you mess up this bad. They're meant to act as breadcrumbs to new locations and outfits. You shouldn't be actively going out your way searching for them

Not trying to strawman you, just curious how it's different.

I stopped playing because the placement of the collectibles seemed random and not in a way to lead you around a level like in the original Banjo games. It just became tiresome walking aimlessly around half empty levels looking for one or two notes/feathers/quills (cant even remember what they were desu) just sitting off in a corner.

>YK is way, way better than Mario Odyssey

You're absolutely delusional

I just played it. Avoided it for the entire year because of Sup Forums.

It's fantastic. Literally everything that I wanted out of a Banjo game from Kickstarter. Casino level was shit, but the final level was amazing.

I never played it but what i gathered from what people said and watching videos its Rare being as thick as usual. BK and BT were beloved games... in the 90s and early 00s. I can play those games now and realise how much is wrong with them. From what i understand, they kept alot of concepts from BK in YL that were flawed to all hell for the sake of "muh nostalgia".

It was bad, I really wanted to like it but it was soulless and empty.

A Hat in Time is /VERY/ short, but it's a window into exactly what I thought Tooka was going to be.

OKAY So at this point in this thread:

7 people like 3d platformer collecathons OR expressed that they can be good with AHiT or others

2 or 3 people expressed hate towards 3d platformer collectathons and don't want it back!

Coins are the breadcrumbs in Mario.

I haven't played Y-K, but from what I understand, Quills take the place of notes in that there are a set number in each world and that you spend them on moves, right? Moons in Odyssey aren't the same thing. Moons are Jiggies. If you wanted to complain about something, compare the quills to purple coins.

This.
People should learn to distance the game from all the drama.
I love Jontron but I could still enjoy the game despite that mistake.

If their aim was to make it like Banjo, they fucked up hard.
It didn't have memorable characters, worlds or anything else that made Banjo games good.
I'm glad that Hat in Time was well received, and devs said that'd give the additional worlds as free DLC.
Having the team make full-sized game using similar concept of worlds with varied missions would be fucking awesome. That's one part of Mario Sunshine that I really liked.

Game was a shitshow, that's why.

Yooka Laylee was a 6/10 game and only if you like the genre and especially Banjo.

Even then quills are easily way more bullshit. The only reason I didn't 100% yooka laylee is that every zone has insanely bullshit quills hidden in retarted spots.

OKAY So at this point in this thread STILL:

7 people like 3d platformer collecathons OR expressed that they can be good with AHiT or others

2 or 3 people expressed hate towards 3d platformer collectathons and don't want it back!

I think this threds getting too popular so no one will answer my original question and just debate whether the games good or not

I dont know how it fared but vitue signaling didnt do them any favor, then again i dont know how many sales the shitstorm costed them but considering a lot of support came from Jon's fanbase it probably was a pretty penny.

whoever designed YL's levels has no idea what makes platformers good

It's bad because they fired JonTron over his controversial statements regarding black people

Flying is the very last ability you get in the game from the final stage, probably after you've done the majority of the games platforming. This really isn't an issue.

I wanna know if people hate 90s style 3d platformer collectathons, but everyone said Yooka is bad just cause its a shit game and not because of it being in that genre. So I'll take your word for it.

The only reason AHiT is talked up is because they took advantage of the PR blunder of YL and got Jontron.
Game is incredibly mediocre.

You have to understand Yooka Laylee is part of a group of games that can't be talked about on Sup Forums, for many reasons (jonTron fiasco, non-Nintendo platformer, cancelled on Wii U, delayed on Switch).

Just like with DmC, Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, Sup Forums just can't handle it.

this, it's certainly better than yooka laylee but still mediocre, also having a loli makes half of Sup Forums love it

>tfw I've been here for 6+ years and have never watched a YouTube personality
It's pretty good when all you have to worry about is videogames.

I think you have to be literally Sup Forums to actually give a fuck about whether or not JonTron voices one of the gibberish lines in a video game

99% of people who dislike YL dislike it purely for what it is

A Hat in Time is just as bad as Yooka Laylee. If Jontron wasn't involved with either game you would admit this too.

Fuck you, the game would have been rubbish even with Jon in it.
With every genre you'll have people who just dislike it.

Stop being fucking retarded. I know you think you're making hilarious joke, but you're just being a dumbass.

So far we got

8 people that like or implied they like 3d platformer collectathons.

2 or 3 people that dont like 3d platformer collectathons. (1 comment was pretty vague)

Yes I actually went through all the comments to determine this.

Literally stop this autism and discuss the game like a normal human being. Anyone with half a brain knows that a game just needs to be good, the genre is irrelevant.
