I heard many extension devs gave up because they were frustrated by the limitations the new Web Extension format gave them

Why would Mozilla move to a more restricted format? I don't really understand that

Josiah Howard
Josiah Howard

Not the user you asked, but: the short answer is that it was necessary to make Firefox more secure, faster and to allow those improvements to happen faster in the future.

There are a bunch of pros/cons that had to be considered, it's obviously not all good - but it wasn't a decision made without a lot of thought and good reason. The longer they waited the worse the problem was getting.

IMO most of the worthwhile discussion is over the exact limits of the new API, not whether or not the changeover was a good idea.

They use a different method for redirection, haven't seen any benefit over either one. They seem the same in practice. Local CDN supports more CDNs. Back when I installed Local CDN, Decentraleyes didn't have a version that worked on FF57 so the choice was easy to make.

why wont userChrome.css work with v57?

Owen Murphy
Owen Murphy

Don't use UA spoofing with uMatrix, it's known issue, has been talked about a lot, and bottom line is that spoofing UA is pointless unless one also block all JS at the same time. I said I would remove this feature eventually, because it gives a false sense of privacy, given that as soon as javascript is allowed to execute, fingerprinting is the real issue, of which UA is only a tiny part of it. At most, I will releguate it to a toy feature with no privacy value.

looks like spoofing is pointless without breaking every site

Julian Ross

Umatrix allows a more fine grained control. It can block cookies, css, images and scripts just the way you want to. You can do things like only allowing first party images/css while blocking everything else, I don't think uBO can do that as easily. Also the interface in uMatrix is easier to read, because it shows how many requests it has blocked from each source. But like that other user said, the difference isn't that big since javascript is the by far most important thing you should be blocking.

At that time more than half developers abandoned their addons because mozilla switched to google's "2 versions a month" model and dropped compatibility every fucking update. Even if addons actually worked mozilla still bitched and claimed them incompatible and addons were becoming obsolete before getting approved.
A lot of addons disappeared at that time.

Ian Edwards

A lot of addons disappeared at that time.
The ones I used remained

Xavier Murphy
Xavier Murphy

2 versions a month
I think you mean "an update every 6 weeks."
And no, addons used to break not because of Mozilla, but because XUL addons depended on the browser itself, and any little tweak Mozilla did to the browser could break them.
Then Mozilla and add-on developers had to waste time debugging and fixing the regression. That's one of the main reasons they migrated to WebExtensions: now addons shouldn't break between updates and Mozilla can revamp the entire thing without recieveing 9001 bug reports every release consisting of "Mozilla u cuck u broek my addon fuc u!!!1"

That's the major difference that people don't seem to fully appreciate With webextensions Mozilla can now completely change the entire browser rendering engine, like say swap it out with Servo and the extensions will continue to work exactly the same. WebExtensions will remain functional as long as the externally facing APIs remain the same and there's little reason to ever need to change those.

Ethan Thompson

It doesn't make much sense for Mozilla to do that. If they wanted to do that they likely wouldn't rewrite Firefox first, they could just take chromium and rebrand it straight up. It would be against their mission to do that anyway. Firefox would be improved considerably but it would hinder the web development in the long term.

Since they're working on Servo and servo was designed as a drop in replacement for Chromium I think it's more logical to assume they're going to do that with servo instead

Go to your Firefox profile folder (hit the Windows key, type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ and hit Enter, it should be there) create a new folder called 'chrome' and a new file inside it called 'userChrome.css', and paste this code:

why smart https and not https everywhere?
honest question

Liam Jackson
Liam Jackson

not him, but afaik they work a bit differently.
Smart https will just force all urls to https, whereas https everywhere is able to prevent any connection on a page from loading unless it is encrypted.

Henry Johnson
Henry Johnson

https everywhere uses a predefined list which is limited and sites not on the list wont switch to https automatically. using a list is also slower
smart https always tries https and if it fails it reverts to http.

Easton Rogers

You can do this with an AHK (AutoHotKey script) if you use Windows. Google it, hard for me to give you here on Sup Forums. If that's not an alternative, the Vivaldi browser has this as an option within the browser. If that's also not an option, you can make the extension yourself or maybe a Linux distro has it within its OS.

Is there anyway to cheat your uBlock number of blocked items, I want to migrate my chromium number to firefox

Parker Young
Parker Young

So I use Firefox combined with an addon called Leechblock which helps to prevent me from accessing time-wasting sites and porn, it allows you to set a password to lock you out of the addon screen, etc. and it's been working pretty fool-proof for me.

Only problem is that I've known for a long time that at any point I could just enter firefox's 'safe mode' by clicking the firefox icon on my taskbar while holding the shift key. That meant that anytime I suddenly had the urge to view porn or waste my time, I would end up entering safe mode, which disabled the leechblock addon.

I discovered something called the 'CCK2 Wizard', which allowed me to easily edit the Firefox config file to make it impossible to use the shift key+firefox icon thing I mention above to enter safe mode.

Yesterday that become inoperable due to the latest Firefox upgrade. I'd like to stick with the new version, is anyone able to instruct me on how I might disable this safemode thing on the latest Firefox (Quantum)?

This would really be helpful not only to me but to a lot of people.
