What are essential bands I should listen to from Russia? Started learning Russian and I was looking for anything interesting really.

All I was familiar with before I started studying was Grazhdanskaya Oborona, and honestly I don't know much else. How do I get into Nautilus Pompilius, and are they worth listening to, by the way? While Russia's classical legacy is incredible without a doubt, I'd rather listen to something with Russian lyrics obviously.

Post tsarist Russia is a cultural wasteland. The soviets made sure to kill anyone with any talent or creativity . That legacy can be seen today, as Russia has not produced any single work of cultural significance in art, film, music, or literature, since the rise of Lenin.

...

Found the pleb.

Is this bait?
Shepitko, Kalatozov, Tarkovsky are some of the best directors out there and all of them produced their masterpieces after the second world war
Schnittke, Denisov, Gubaidulina, Ustvolskaya and Shostakovich are some of the most important composers of the 20th century

Кинo

The combined influence of all art coming from Russia since 1917 has been just as impactful on the worlds cultural landscape as all American art made from 1917 to 1927, with literally no exaggeration. You listed at most two exceptions to my rule. St.Petersburg was one of the cultural centres of Europe before the decades of Soviet censorship turned a flow of beautiful art into a faucet drip. To deny that is to simply deny history.

Nice backpedaling.

Egor i Opizdenevshie is another Letov's band, in case you didn't know about them. Other than that, I can't help you really.

is a good idea.

Zemfira
she's kinda the bjork of Russia
but more rock

Ruskaja is bretty good if you're into rock/ska. They're technically of Austrian nationality, but they are from Russia. They mix it up in language though. Russian is most common, but you also get English, Spanish and German mixed in.

I like Kino

Auktyon and other projects of Fedorov like "Дyшeпoлeзныe пecни нa кaждый дeнь".

American cultural influence is not due to quality of art but rather economic and military strength.

Somethere in late 90's Russian music met it's death. Now it's mostly outdated and commercial recaps of western hip-hop or angsty tenage garagebands.

4 пoзиции бpyнo or whatever, but they're still shit. Honestly most modern bands here are low effort clones of their western counterparts with some cheap vodka poured all over them, I don't think there's a single worthy music collective apart from some decent techno DJs

Back in the days when Mihalock was good.

i ironically like tommy cash

and i love russian witchouse, for real tho

All good art from the Soviet Union was a result of centuries of Russian Empire education.

Soviet education thus far has failed to produce any works of significance.
