These ads were not wrong because they portrayed obesity as a bad thing, but because they did so by demeaning and shaming those who are already overweight. Such a strategy is insensitive and largely ineffective, because instead of promoting healthy habits, it just encourages people to feel ashamed of themselves, which can result in them clamming up, isolating themselves and eating even more to ease their emotional pain, which is not something anyone wants.
