> Be 22 > African American > Never listen to any form of rock n roll a day in your life > Become blown away when a friend shows you "Symphony Of Destruction" by Megadeth > Start researching and listening to more bands such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer, Diamondhead, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Slipknot, Disturbed, System Of A Down, Anthrax, Pantera,
Could those bands I just listed be considered 'Heavy Metal'?
> Start getting into death metal after hearing a song from "Cannibal Corpse" > Don't know how to feel about it though since I don't understand shit, but that heavy sound they have really gets you going. > Would like to know from people here that do listen to this type of genre some bands I should listen to?
Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Diamondhead, and Def Leppard are "heavy metal". Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax are thrash metal AC/DC is hard rock Slipknot, Disturbed, and System of a Down are nu metal Pantera is groove metal
For death metal: Death, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death. Assuck, Atheist, Edge of Sanity

Listen to Holy Mountain and let your journey into Doom begin
John Allen
>Metal Maiden, Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer Diamond Head, Anthrax, Pantera >not metal SOAD Def Leppard Slipknot Disturbed Ac/Dc
As for recs… most of these are pretty accessible, but are a good starting point to branch out from:
>Metallica and Megadeth Testament- Practice What You Preach(not to big into Testament but I like this album) Exodus- Fabulous Disaster Heathen- Victims of Deception
> Slayer: Sodom- Agent Orange Kreator- Pleasure to Kill Venom- Black Metal Sepultura- Arise (maybe Roots if you dig nu-metal)
>Anthrax: Overkill S.O.D. (Scott Ian's side project from the 80s)
>early Sabbath: Pentagram- First Daze Here Sleep- Holy Mountain Witchfinder General- Death Penalty Ozzy, I guess
>Ronnie James Dio era Sabbath Dio- Holy Diver Judas Priest- Screaming for Vengeance Accept- Teutonic Terror Rainbow- Rising
>Iron Maiden and Diamondhead: Angel Witch-Angel Witch Satan- Court in Act Aria- Megalomania
>Death Metal with more understandable vocals Carcass- Heartwork At the Gates- Slaughter of the Soul
Death metal isn't exactly my favorite so I'm sure somebody else could recommend better stuff

Metal is for children. Listen to Mozart.

Edge Of Sanity - Crimson album is cool, I like the first song.
Thanks this is really informative

here's a chart I found, doesn't have mäyhëm in the black metal zone though check out metal-archives.com/ for specfic types of bands, you can sort by location, genre, lyrical themes, and if the band is still together

>death metal with understandable vocals Just to add on this, >Death (all albums) >Immolation (all albums) >cattle decapitation - (the monilith of inhumanity and the anthropocene extinction) My personal death metal favourites that dont have understandable vocals >demilich - nesphite (isnt for everyone but one of the best composed albums of all time) >portal - outre (basically atmoblack but has death metal guitar tone and vocals) >suffocation - effigy of the forgotton >nile - annihilation of the wicked (more accessible) Hidden gems >Waking the cadaver - real life death (overlooked because the rest of their albums are pure shit) >Putrid pile - collection of butchery (really fun but dismissed as a run of the mill one man slam band)

Crimson and Crimson II albums are officially one track. I personally like Crimson II a lot more.
In what genre would 'The Acacia Strain' 'Atilla' 'August Burns Red' 'Suicide Silence' be placed under? Screamo?

No I'm not looking for deathcore. Since I'm so new to this genre of music still, I want to be knowledable enough to know that Slayer and Metallica are thrash metal bands, where as Death and Judas Priest are heavy metal. I'm not saying Death Metal and Deathcore are similar because death metal sounds way more heavy and dark whereas Deathcore sounds more melodic and boy band ish.
Like would Job For a Cowboy be death metal? Because they're hard to understand also.
Angel Lee
I listened to the whole album that band is awesome
Adrian Nguyen
First thing, Death is a death metal band, not heavy. Second, death metal can be melodic too (see Dismember and rest of swedish death), saccharine even (most of melodeath). Thirdly, you're probably thinking of metal core, which sounds like this youtube.com/watch?v=EEJgBdGbdcU

OP you could try asking around on /metal/ threads. I got a bunch of good recs there when I was getting into death metal.
>0:57 on The Masque
this was the riff that solidified my love for Swedeath
If you want to keep listening to Sleep, the other big release is Dopesmoker, an epic and foundational work for Stoner Metal.
If you're interested in Black Metal, which I am also very much into, I would suggest
>Paracletus by Deathspell Omega >Filosofem by Burzum
CONTROVERSIAL but
>Sunbather by Deafheaven
that last one will make purists mad but if it's a good entry point to modern BM I think

There are literally tons of heavy bands to listen to. Many of the bands you listed are metal, though some may be considered "alternative rock" or just rock'n'roll for AC/DC. Most of the people here probably won't like this sort of music, as most of it is pretty basic. That said, what you've listed is a good start to getting into heavier music. "Heavy metal" was originally blues improvisation with heavy distortion (essentially). These days, metal basically refers to anything with distortion. I recommend the following bands for your tastes: Kansas (poppy, but very rock based) GWAR Jungle Rot Nile (death metal, very different from Cannibal Corpse, they will be hit or miss) Amon Amarth (Melodic Death Metal, very different from CC, but more ear-friendly death metal, so-to-speak)
Jayden Peterson
You should also check out some entry level grunge Soundgarden Alice in Chains Melvins Nirvana Stone Temple Pilots

DSO for a newguy? Are you retarded my friend? This shit is way too heavy/weird and it will probably scare him off.
Dylan Johnson
Dopsesmoker was in my next list so I listened to some of that after the album was over. 'The Druid' and the song you recommended 'Holy Mountain' were sick and I'll add your suggestions to my list. Thanks.
Jose Gomez
I'm not into GWAR but I will be adding these other bands you have told me about to my list.
This new guy has became pretty open minded when it comes to this side of the music ever since Megadeth blew my mind. The stuff that I didn't really like was this.

Just to add some in death metal, Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy are some good melodic death with understandable vocals.
if you want some hideously over the top(but still excellent) power metal, Gloryhammer is a good bet, both albums are good but i like Space 1992:Rise of The Chaos Wizards better
The Satanist by Behemoth is a good album for newcomers to death metal as well, its got a bit of black influence but still fairly user friendly.
Despite what people say about them, Dragonforce has a couple good albums, but anything post ZP Theart leaving the band isnt worth listening to. i would recommend Inhuman Rampage and Valley of The Damned for some good power metal

I'd especially recommend Katalepsy - Musick Brings Injuries. It's probably my favorite of the genre, unfortunately they switched studios or some shit halfway through and had a different vocalist so the second half isn't nearly as good as the first half
Dylan Green
These albums got me into extreme metal: Burzum - Filosofem In Flames - Jester Race, Colony Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane Death - Symbolic Kalmah - Swamplord Gojira - From Mars to Sirius (lenfant sauvage is more accessible though) Meshuggah - I, Obzen Nothing too heavy. Clear vocals and fun melodies. Should be an easy transition from thrash.
Some accessible new releases: Behemoth - The Satanist Mgla - Exercises in Futility Vektor - Terminal Redux Cattle Decapitation - The Athropocene Extinction Panopticon - Autumn Eternal
