because there was no unified "us" for the longest part of our history
we only really exist as one nation since 1871
so the frenchies called us allemagne after the alemanni tribe who threw the franks over the rhine (and the spaniards adopted the name)
the italians just adopted the roman name "germania" for us, which basically referred to every tribe east of the rhine that the romans couldn't conquer (the english just also adopted the name)
and the slavs just named us "niemcy" (which means "mutes" I think), because they weren't able to communicate with the germanic tribes they met
and we just called us after the teutons, which were a germanic tribe living in what is denmark today
so none of these names make really sense 2bh
