Season 3 becomes distinctly average around half-way through on account of the writer's strike and aside from a couple episodes, Season 4 is mostly garbage

Truth, Seasons 1 and 2 are essential political/military sci-fi kino.
There is a drop in quality from 3-4, but there's still some golden episodes that make it worth it, imo. Average BSG is still much better than most shit today. It took nearly nine years for a comparable series to come along.

The season finale is a mixed bag. Yes, sending the ships into the sun is dumb and 150000 years later is a little on the nose and the robot montage is extra dumb. But all the characters got nice endings and, for BSG, that's what counts. Unlike Lost, which hadn't been about the characters since S1 and then pretended it was about the characters so it didn't have to explain stuff in the finale.
