those of you who've moved out what are ur avg weekly/monthly expenses?
trying to figure out whether I can afford to move out with my $20/h job my rent will be roughly $200/250
any time i try to find the average cost of utilities / etc online the range is absolutely huge, so figured I'd ask those with lifestyles similar to myself
Wyatt Gray
oh yeah I'm about 10km from Melbourne city

shameful self bump

240/week in Syd will net you a nice clean room within a shitty traffic spewed suburb with horrible architecture. I.e congested roads.
Source. Living in Tempe/Sydeham area for two years when first moving out.
A relatively modest room within the suburbs, i.e Kogarah/Hurstville will run you 160-200.
Mind you this is for a ROOM.
If you can find a house for that price, jesus fuck just run. Probably is spewing bedbugs.
Dylan Sullivan
Do you mean $200 a week?
You can usually find older flats/apartments and small houses from $170 a week the least around the western areas of Melbourne, not too far from the CBD. That's if you're after a 1 bedroom or studio-type.
Keep in mind the lower you go, the less you're getting in terms of looks.
If you're looking to spend even less, then you'd have to go for a 2 bedroom apartment and share everything with someone.
Also don't forget bond, which is always 1st month's rent upfront. If you want to know how much your rent will be per month, always look at the bond, it's the more definite number because it's over a period of 30 days whereas the "weekly" rates usually advertised account for 28.

Also not a racist cunt, but also stay away from places that have a lot of Pakis/Chinese/Indian people.
They live like pigs.
Hunter Young
Yes, I refer to weekly.
Your land lord will demand you pay every wednesday/friday/monday whatever.
Hudson Powell
$240 a week for just a shitty room?
Holy shit Sydney really does suck.
Also fuck Sydney, last time I went there the closest western suburb to the CBD was like 60 minutes away by train. What the fuck is that shit?
In Melbourne that equates to fucking Tarneit or some shit (which is in the fucking sticks).
Jeremiah Rivera
Living with a partner about 15km in Melbourne Western suburbs.
Been here just over a month.
$370 week rent for 3 bedrooms About $140 a month in electricity (no gas) $50 a month in water and sewerage
Utilities are quite expensive in suburbs coming from living in rural for 8 years
Logan Turner
Yeah I've found a potential place on Domain (Melb) but haven't saved up enough yet so it might get taken
I'm more concerned about stuff like >electricity >gas >water >misc stuff
cus with rent, you can look it up and see what you're gonna have to pay for a place but the numbers people give me for utilities / etc are all over the place
Liam Cook
how many times a week are you planning on having smashed ago on toast at the local cafe?
Henry Smith
The house was nice, close to shops/train stations. But the roads were just perma clogged. House mates were nice enough, didn't have junkies and stuff fucking stuff up.
I was working in a wholesale warehouse in the are and it was 10 mins away from work. Never left the house apart from that so it was alright for the most part.
But yeah, I can agree... Sydney is a shithole for the most part. Expensive as sin and busy as hell.
Julian Rodriguez
kangaroo vegemite cunt koala mate
all australians are criminals

*avo fucking autocorrect
Ayden Lopez
yeah weekly
I've found a potential room to rent, but what i cant get consensus on is utilities / etc
haha none at all,
might have to give up avos all together charging $3.50 - $4 each now
Dominic Rogers
Weekly rent? Wtf is this ramcockery?
Samuel Evans
I assume with 200+ the other stuff like internet/elect/water/gas is included. If you're paying that much for a room without that included you're either an idiot, a rich idiot, or an idiot living in the middle of the city.
Brayden Ortiz
I'll tell you what's criminal
our fucking electricity prices crikey
Juan Jones
do they charge per month in the us?
our landlords much be bigger bloodsuckers than i imagined
Andrew Johnson
wow rent in aus is 3rd world cheap. you guys must get paid shit
Parker Reed
Where abouts are you now? Went to school in Kogarah, moved to Hurstville. Rent is ridiculous ($480 a week for a single bedroom because I cant stand living with 8 indians in a sharehouse). Am I the only one who puts up with a 1h 30 min drive to Parra each morning?? I can't keep living like this, its getting stressful especially around Christmas. Ive got practically zero savings now.
Blake Foster
you're joking right?
a bunch of mericans raged at me the other day for talking about how $20 an hour was crap
Carson Reed
You know that rental prices in the US are around 600/month for an entire fucking apartment to yourself, right?
Good luck getting anything like that in Aust.
Bentley Hill
The 2 things I've heard from everyone living alone as being the most expensive is rent and food.
Legit, rent and food.
Everything else is managable over a period of 2, 3, 6 month increments.
Not only that, but with utilities, you can ease your use anytime, thus making them even cheaper - but your rent will always be the same and you will always crave a gourmet burger or some shit.
Food racks up, and rent is always static. You have to have those down pat.
Also, apartments and flats usually never charge for water - only gas and elec. And don't forget the price of the internet, netflix and phone use.
My other piece of advice: people tend to overlook the factor of NEIGHBOURHOOD.
Although rarely, sometimes a place is put up with a cheaper price because the fucking area is riddled with shitty neighbours or there are dangerous assholes living closeby. This is a real factor and you should not overlook it. Before signing for a place, always inspect and also chill around for a bit during the day and night at the address, scope out the area as you would if you were a resident, for a while. Check out how fucked the neighbours are and it'll save you a lot of bullshit in the long run.
Nolan Ortiz
water is often paid by the landlord in an apartment, so check that, otherwise about $10/week/house. electricity will be between $20 and $100/week depending on usage. computers (unless mining) don't use shit. the dryer, aircon, leaving lights on, etc are the killers internet 15-25 per week depending on plan
Isaiah Perry
oh yeah double checked and utilities are included
yeah but which state are you talking about
cus I'm living fairly close to the city centre
Thomas Diaz
do you bros think I could survive with an $18/hr job not far from the city? (melb too)
working 3-5 nights a week, 5 hours per day
Ayden Cox
Lived in Sydney, Brisbane and Coffs. By far the best option is to find a friend or relo to move in with and split the bills. A room in a house with strangers was a mix bag of experiences for me - ranging from a married couple (couldnt bring home girls), old swindling wogs (constant arguments), methhead couple who would pump kerser and break plates at 4 am (almost stabbed).
Dont do it lad. You want to move out? The more housemates the better. You can lose friends but learn how to have your own life and it wont be so bad. Plus its legit fun for the first couple years.
Levi Bennett
Here's some cash moite
Jason Green
sometimes that neighbourhood can work to your advantage. I was paying about 100 per week (albeit 10years ago) in a great fucking terrace near the abos in redfern, besides having to escort my gf from her car and leaving the glovebox open so the pricks could see there was nothing to steal, it was the best
Gavin Gomez
Electricity is now beyond a joke. Even with our insane rents (Mostly Sydney) it was bearable. Now the cost of living, tolls, rego, electricity its gotten tough for even people who would of classified themselves as middle class. I really hope there is a major correction on our housing market and the interest rates spike. It may make the chance of owning a home a little bit more attainable.
Owen Martinez
this, I always lived with mates, it's the best
Jaxson Williams
Owning a home?
Haha, wtf is that shit. You don't own a home anyway even if you're paying for it. The bank does. After a hefty deposit, shit ton of interest and DECADES of paying, that shit isn't yours until you're old and grey and you're not even gonna reap the rewards until you're long gone six feet under.
Rent, be free, pay less and move addresses every few years. Paying a mortgage is a meme that idiots fall for.
Ryan Collins
5 nights a week, yes. 3 nights a week, no
Alexander Myers
Maybe. But that's rare.
It only takes one idiot who is a mentally unstable alcoholic to constantly be up your nose about shit, which means police reports that amount to zero and restraining orders that do nothing.
If you're a reasonable human being who just wants to go about their day, then having to deal with idiots who don't care whether they live or die is a total nuisance.
Leo Jenkins
you're kidding right? I got I'm to the market 10 years ago, now live in a $2m house and pay about $400/week on the mortgage. it sucks to begin with, but it all catches up and you'll be the sucker for life.
Oliver Gutierrez
It depends what you go for.
Also, get a 6 month lease and create a plan B if shit hits the fan (the opportunity to move back if you can).
After 6 months you can re-assess and then see if it's for you.
Not only that, but for 6 months you can grind and enjoy the spoils of I N D E P E N D E N C E.
But realistically your overall goal of moving out is to never return. You can work on that over the time of your life. But you might as well enjoy it while you're young.
Jayden Fisher
the cops all know the local shitbags by name, they're on your side. hold your head high, no one will cause shit.
Adrian Rodriguez
Typically, water is included in your rent price, however, landlords will charge you extra is your water usage is high and they cop a big bill for it. Consider that if you and your Viet mates are planning on starting a rice farm or cotton plantation in the living room.
Luis Rivera
It only takes one shitty moment for that house of yours to be the bank's.
Then you will know who's house it really is.
P.S, it's not yours and it isn't for decades to come.
Make sure you don't die anytime soon (all that extra paying for nothing).
Joshua Carter
good advice. also, if you move out with mates, often if you have to bail early, you can have another mate take your place
Brody Parker
one shitty moment and I sell and walk away with 1.5 the bank holds the deed, but the capital is mine
Easton Perez
I live smack bang in the middle of Brisbane city. One bedroom, one bathroom and one (underground/secured) parking. Plus Balcony. Brand new place. If there’s ever an issue, management/the real estate fixes it straight away. NBN as well. I live here with my girlfriend, and there’s more than enough room. We pay $380 in total a week. To be honest, it feels like a too good to be true scenario. But we looked around for ages to find somewhere like this. But in saying that, we did say no to a lot of places that were more than okay.
William Morris
you have to consider that 1 aud is only around 75 cents in us dollar. but anyway it seems like renting a flat/room/apartment in australia is fucking expensive.
