Mason Roberts

No way, PJ has fallen off way harder. Tori just released a really impressive musical two years ago. I think her albums have also been completely decent. She recorded a song with her daughter for the first time, wrote maybe the greatest song ever about plastic surgery disasters, lots of other stuff. I'm very sorry I just missed her play. She absolutely runs circles around PJ who I think really needs to find another line of work at this point.

Easton Parker

Jace Thomas
Jace Thomas

Why would it be bait? Compare their last 5 years and Tori will annihilate her. I just think at this point PJs priorities are elsewhere and her music is just a vehicle for that. She's obviously more interested in missionary work or whatever the fuck she's been doing.

Easton Kelly
Easton Kelly

cuz tori is cringy af and doesn't know how to edit or produce a decent album anymore? and pj just released one of her best albums only 6ish yrs ago while tori hasn't been relevant since like 2001

Colton Fisher
Colton Fisher

Ok we can go back 7 years

PJ - 80 minutes on 2 albums
Tori - 7 hours on 5 albums

Anthony Sanders

pj just released one of her best albums
no thats completely wrong and you know it

Ian Perry

quality over quantity and that is exactly why tori is bad now. she legit just puts everything on an album no matter how bad it is. a lot of music publications don't even pick toris albums up for reviewing anymore, that's pretty bad man.

and can u explain why uve decided that pj and tori need to be compared? why aren't we talking about bjork too?

Justin Green
Justin Green

How can you even call it a holy trinity? Bjork is so above them it's not even funny, besides Tori Amos and PJ Harvey are mostly just trash.

From what I'm hearing so far Let England Shake isn't that big a deal and isn't exactly devoid of cringe. The Glorious Land and The Words That Murder are back to back songs taken with a grain of salt for me.

Easton Hill

Because women are only marketable as sex objects and aren't considered to be capable of anything technically impressive by society. Largely due to biological norms, mostly due to gender roles, partially due to people wanting to piss of "feminists".

Yes, its wonderful. Dissonant auto-harp on a Sunday morning at 9am, a sample from the Four Lads "Instanbul" present in the song for once, all as Gordon Brown looks on. You're watching history.

Hunter Flores

Kinda feel bad for Leslie Rankine. She had a great voice and did some interesting stuff, but her "extreme" feminism (that was tame compared to current feminism) was source of mockery bcs that meme 90s phrase.

Tori Amos never hid the Kate Bush influence, but it's like she got stuck in "The Red Shoes" since 98

Why doesn't Sup Forums ever discuss Juliana Hatfield, Liz Phair or Lisa Germano? Exile in Guyville is probably the most well received female album in decades. Geek the Girl is maybe the best female album of all time. It's not just Scaruffi, pretty much everyone in the music world acknowledges how good those artists were.

Christopher Turner
Christopher Turner

Bcs the're plebs/waifufags and those artists dont have enough photoshoots to fill a thread.
Lisa Germano is awesome and her output is solid, but Liz made 1 1/2 decent album and Juliana was a joke even in the 90s. How about Tanya Donelly, Kristin Hersh (their solo work is strong), Cat Power, Kendra Smith, Hope Sandoval (yeah, I know she only co-wrote in Mazzy Star) amongst others
Anyways the "girly girl with distorted guitars" scene in the 90s was a fad a needs to be forgotten, Juliana Hatfield was the first but MTV was flooded with shit like Eves Plum, Letters To Cleo, Veruca Salt, Frente! and a lot more literally who's. Poe was probably the only decent band to come out of that scene

Dominic Nguyen
Dominic Nguyen

hips lips tits power

Bit sexist. Probably wrote by some fat wanker.

Evan Baker
Evan Baker

Her new album is pretty good actually.

I fucking love her early work but yeah, she really fell of over the last decade or so.

Connor Moore
Connor Moore

I fail to see what's interesting about Lisa Germano and her Geek the Girl album. It has a couple of pretty good songs but the rest is harmless, generic alt-rock with some orchestration here and there. She is not a good singer and not a very imaginative lyricist.

Scaruffi is such a pleb. He praises this dull album but gives low ratings to much more interesting female songwriters/producers (Bjork and Kate Bush) just because they're more well-known.

Eli Ortiz
Eli Ortiz

Not him but Tori's latest album "Native Invader" is much-much better than PJ's. Can't argue on Let England Shake though, that one is fantastic.

Ian Peterson
Ian Peterson

It's a shame that she married her sound engineer. Mark's a shitty guitarist and he is really holding her music back imo. Just imagine her music with actual musicians...

William Brooks
William Brooks

PJs last was nice but a bit boring, sounds like LES b-sides to me. I keep getting disappointed with the Tori releases so I just stopped trying. The guitar work and production have just all over the place, rehashed themes, vocals really inconsistent etc

They play her in the grocery store a lot and that makes me feel rly sad and old desu

Angel Ward
Angel Ward

yeah what the fuck there's no way she can't hear how bad he is. also if she just released less and threw out all the album filler we might be good

Gavin Campbell
Gavin Campbell

Native Invader: 1 gr8 song and 60 minutes of boring rehashed Tori

Hope Six: No standout tracks but it's consistent and doesnt sound like anything she's done before, still a solid 7/10 album

The main difference between them is that while Polly is constantly pushing her boundaries, Tori prefers to continue doing the safe same album since "the beekeeper"

Thats one thing, the other is that he manages her touring schedule and booking fees. Out of the three artists in OPs pic, Tori is the only one that never toured South America for example.
He's literally destroying her career

Hudson Morgan

60 minutes rehashed Tori
I highly disagree with you. Native Invader has at least 4-5 great songs, 5 decent songs and maybe 2-3 forgettable ones. I wasn't a big fan of it first but it grew on me a lot. I love PJ as well but unfortunately I just couldn't get into Hope Six, like something that made her previous work so unique was missing.

Zachary Williams
Zachary Williams

Hope Six was kinda disappointing, but she's currently touring with Mick Harvey and the drummer from Gallon Drunk, something tells me her next one will be awesome

Julian Powell
Julian Powell

Hotel, Venus, and Scarlet are good records. It's around the beekeeper when she started to make really mediocre stuff.

Carter Hall

Let it be true. I actually believe that LES is her second best album, I wonder if she could ever be able top that. But Mick Harvey is a good sign indeed.

Mason Ramirez

Daniel Diaz
Daniel Diaz

She's playing "down by the water" live for the first time in decades and hanging out with some ex-Bad Seeds lately. If it sounds at least like an Anita Lane album I will be happy

Hotel is gr8, venus and scarlet where ok but wayyy too long. But yeh, The Beekeeper was when everything went downhill.
She literally needs to divorce and "come to Brazil", it could be the kick that she needs to get old edgy Tori back

Caleb Thomas
Caleb Thomas

Same, but I didnt like "is this desire"at first and now I love it, something similar happened to me with "hu hu her" (still skip some track thou), so maybe HSDM will eventually grow on me as well.
"To bring you my love" is hands down her masterpiece, everything that makes her great is on that album, following it must been hard, but she did alright

Jackson Long

Always Rid of Me but TBYML and Is This Desire? are so so close behind. Would be Dance Hall if we were counting those

The 3 of them didnt have a problem writing songs about fucking, Tori got married to a dork and PJ just went into a more "artistic" direction (for now)

Cameron Gutierrez
Cameron Gutierrez

"So you can make me come that doesn't make you jesus"

For a start, Scaruffi thinks Lisa is like Joni Mitchell and Lou Reed.

Secondly taking off your waifufag-tinted glasses he has never given Kate or Bjork low ratings and rates several of their albums as good, he has just never given the exceptionally high rating that he gave to albums by Alanis, Tori and PJ Harvey who are also well-known. Partially because he doesn't just go by songwriting or production

Pretty sure Alanis owes most of her success to Glen Ballard, but they couldn't have pulled it off without her being a great performer and her live shows were great.
She did a small co-headlining tour with Tori but I don't think Tori was happy about it. You can tell she was listening to too much Tori when her and Glen wrote JLP but at least she never tried to hide that. Super inconsistent after her debut sadly

Nice that people are talking about Tori for a change. She's always ignored on Sup Forums.
Her recent albums are indeed very bad but this woman put out some insanely good music back in the 90s. I think her first four albums are all fantastic. She's a brilliant piano player as well, one of the best in the context of popular music.
She has run out of ideas though.

I really like PJ Harvey. The thing with her though is that I wouldn't place any of her albums among my favorites. She has never put out anything that completely amazed me. But yeah, she's great.

Under the pink is a good starting point. Boys for Pele is her masterpiece but it's very inaccessible.
Don't listen to "Y kant tori read".

I'd just go for Under the Pink, Boys for Pele next, and then Choirgirl

Shirley Manson is tight but she doesn't belong with these three. Also Garbage wasn't even a thing yet.

The problem is that JLP was so massively overplayed/overexposed that it turned into cancer and people didn't want to be seen with that CD on their shelf which was why thrift stores ended up with mountains of them.

For me Choirgirl is more accessible than Boys.. the fact that its shorter and more varied in styles makes it more easy to get into.
Boys for Pele is a masterpiece, but you need to be in certain mindset to get into it, also, you need the original version, not the reissue with that awfull remix of Talula that ruins the flow and one of the best tracks at the same time, why Tori? Why???

Yea you're probably right I'll second this. I just adore Pele but it's difficult to rec.

But Angelfish was already around, yeah, they where another generic Curve ripoff, but Shirleys picture was already around music magazines.
Anyways, the day she makes a solo album as good as anything released by this holy trinity, then she might join the club. She's awesome but needs a solid band behind her

Little Earthquakes [Atlantic, 1991]

She's been raped and she's written a great song about it--the quietly terrifying acapella "Me and a Gun". That means she's not Kate Bush. But although I'm sure she's her own person and all, Kate Bush's market share she'd happily settle for. C+

I think Y Kant Tori Read is great it reminds me a lot of the kind of stuff Laura Branigan did.

Personally I would start with To Venus and Back simply because the live album included is absolutely godly. Tori in her prime was one of the best live performers ever.

Is this a Tori thread now?

My favorite Tori song is probably this one

God yeah, I remember liking JLP but when I had overplayed it myself, it just didn't go away. It was everywhere.

I never really go back to it, think I pulled it out once in the past 20 yrs just for nostalgics sake desu.

Tor had the weirdest fanbase. No idea what to expect at my first show and it ended up being a bunch of metal heads, all the weird gays, a fuck ton of pretty but damaged girls, and a ton of goths. Really odd vibe but everyone was super into it.
Anyone remember her singing with Maynard?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Sarah Mclachlan yet. Surfacing and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy were both gems. The 90's were pretty much the golden age of female music. No other decade has even come close.

I think the only female worth a damn that played at Lilith Fair is Fiona Apple. Sarah Mawhatever did have a sweet voice tho.

There were just so so many middle of the road female singer-songwriters getting signed. Probably Melissa Etheridges fault.

The problem with Boys for Pele is that the tracks don't really flow together. I find it really difficult to listen to the record all the way through in one sitting because of that. I would cut maybe 2 or 3 songs and slightly rechange the track order. Nevertheless the music is really strong and powerful, definitely her best album in my opinion.

Personally I would start with To Venus and Back simply because the live album included is absolutely godly
I totally agree. I love that live album because it's a full band performance and they stretch out the songs nicely. I wish she would still have full band performances instead of solo shows.

Dominic Rivera

Yeah, I've never seen a Tori Amos thread on Sup Forums before with so many replies. I have a feeling that just not many people knows her on Sup Forums.

Great pick. My favorite song is probably Horses.

Her rider includes two full sized pianos and a very specific hapsicord, that why she doesn't tour much, her booking fees are insanely high, if she added a band she would literally go broke.
Basically, she needs to pull her head out of her ass, get a fucking Nord, a backing band and do a proper tour.

Owen Young
Owen Young

if she added a band she would literally go broke
I find this hard to believe but so be it. I blame her husband.

I really think Toris old work went under the radar when she started making adult contemporary and it kind of became embarrassing instead of cool to say you like her.

When she dies people will start talking about her work and influence again. Sounds dark but it's probs true!

Me too. Compare something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjXZrzmdnAE to some of her recent shows and it is obvious how much better it was when she toured with an actual band. While i doubt she would still sound this good in 2017, i'm sure having a backing band would still make an enormous difference.
