burt cobain

Kek

Mark Knopfler

Brian May, John McLaughlin, Duane Allman, Les Paul, Django Reinhardt, Steve Hackett, David Gilmour, Steve Howe
Those guys from the top of my head

top ten
Jimi Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix)
Marc Ribot (Marc Ribot)
(then, far behind)
Robert Quine (Robert Quine)
John Fahey
Sandy Bull
Keiji Haino
Caspar Brötzmann (Caspar Brötzmann)
Ian Williams (Don Caballero, Storm & Stress, Battles)
Jeff Beck (Yardbirds)
Joe Baiza (Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress)

I hate him. He's a cunt.

JACK WHITE

i maintain that his solo on "school" is fucking sick

>brian may
lol wut

never heard of him?

surprised fripp hasn't been mentioned
ian williams is mad underrated by guitarists

Game changer coming through

>putting Caspar Brotzmann and Keiji Haino in a list of top ten guitarists
>mixing electric and acoustic guitarists
ISHYGDDT

John Frusciante.

Eric Clapton (64'-71')
David Gilmour(71'-80')
George Harrison (65'-70')

adrian belew and robert fripp
lee ranaldo and thurston moore
kevin shields
ron asheton
robert smith
johnny ramone (yes im serious)
marty piper and peter koppes

shit... how could i forget my favourite of all time... neil young!!

>muh tapping muh shredding

Shawn lane does some sick stuff. Eric johnson was kinda pop, but his live cliffs of dover were awesome

It really depends on the genre but in metal it's Dave Mustaine from a song writing perspective.

Go to bed, Eno

lol jk, I agree with your picks.

>Harrison
Literally the only mention of any of the Beatles yet so far.

What does Scruffs like about Marc Ribot?
Gary Lucas

youtube.com/watch?v=E1rIN4JomTs

Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Sterling Morrison, Bill Frisell, David Gilmour, Francisco Tarrega, BB King and Stevie ray Vaughn are my personal favourites

Glenn Campbell

Andy Summers

I've never been able to figure out his fascination with Ribot either. The guy is an incredible guitarist for sure, but surely it can't be just because he's one of the guys doing "jazz guitar" in rock music really well, can it?

desu Robert Quine is an absolute fucking monster with the Voidoids, but I don't really know anything else he was a part of that had that same sort of raw, untempered sound. Anybody?

John McLaughlin.

Zappa

...

...

Haven't look @ bread but, no one said these yet:
>Bill Nelson
>Steve Hillage
>Allan Holdsworth

...

Adrian is a barely literate guitarist tho, it's his shtick but his most memorable parts he's barely playing anything. His spotlights in home of the brave are literally all "one note" solos.

>No one mentioned Randy Rhoads

you serious? his resume speaks for itself.

None of the other members considered themselves an exceptional guitarist.

>you serious
Watch the performance nigger, he doesn't even posture to be a guitar maven.

One and only

a great guitarist knows how to get you with just 1 note.

what are you talking about, home of the brave is camp all the way

Eric Johnson

The dude from Chicago
Even Hendrix said he's the one guitar player better than him

Django, Chet, Scotty, Jimi, Eddie, I would say. At least the most influential.

...

Rory Gallagher was Irish...

Prove me wrong I dare you

>Brian May

I enjoy Queen, but come on. Even I know that band was held entirely together by Freddie. May was the most competent behind him though, but nowhere near the laurels of Page, Hendrix and Clapton.

Lennon and McCartney never considered themselves exceptional guitarists and always lauded Harrison, and rightfully so.

Paco de Lucia
Buckethead (best alive)

Alex Lifeson

>all this David Gilmour

You're alright Sup Forums.

Pic related is another one of my favorites. My high school road trips with my Korean friend were framed by Metallica.

Are you kidding me? Brain was a fuckin beast on that guitar. With regards to technical ability, he's definitely up there. He was doing stuff back in 1971 that would become common place five years later.

He was good, just not GOAT.

[spoiler]But I respect your opinion.

No Ritchie Blackmore?

Oh, I wasn't saying he was GOAT, I know he's not THAT good, i'm just saying that his skills are grossly underrated on this board.

His blues playing is pretty on point imo
youtu.be/t-Dn_n3O1_Y

Then again I'm a big fanboy of broken up blues pieces

>1 mention of Fripp
>1 mention of Lloyd
I hate nu-Sup Forums

Frank Zappa
Steve Vai
John McLaughlin
Al Di Meola
Paco De Lucia
Larry Coryell
Django Reinhardt

the answer is Neil Young playing electric guitar.

youtube.com/watch?v=7c4bG27zhQ8

Charlie Christian
T-Bone Walker
Les Paul

add Malcolm and Angus Young to the list

How could you post Johnny Ramone, and not mention Pete Townsend?

I highly suggest you pull out your copy of Sheer Heart Attack and listen to the first song, Brighton Rock again from start to finish before posting such ignorant statements.

Pete is a sick guitarist. One can only wonder what he'd write if his bandmates were a little more "conventional".

phil keaggy?

yep youre right. pete had the power.

>no mention of Jerry Reed or Chet Atkins
Sup Forums more like /nu/male

youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&persist_app=1&noapp=1&v=Ni8KBhnebwE

Oh you poor cunt

man that tone is just insane!
sounds like his guitar is about to blow up.

Pete gets overlooked because he tended to focus more on the music as a whole with his songwriting. On a technical level he's definitely got the skills.

Terry Kath

Brian May from Queen
Buck Dharma from Blue Öyster Cult

Also don't mind me saying but I never saw why either Jimi or Jimmy were all that good.

Don't feel bad.
Nobody has yet mentioned Jerry Garcia or Eddie Hazel either.

Brian May is amazing. Listen to some stuff like Stone Cold Crazy or March of The black Queen

Sheer Heart Attack is some of his most impressive stuff.

This. First 2 Ozzy albums are really good. Also why has no one mentioned fucking SATCH yet?

I've been getting into a lot of Rory lately and he's just so good. More importantly though, he's so fun to listen to. Studio recordings with a real live feel that make you think you're right there seeing it.

Steve Vai
Les Paul
Jimi Hendrix
Stevie ray Vaughn
John Petrucci (I know Sup Forums hates DT, but his solo albums and Liquid Tension Experiment were great.)
Guthrie Govan (is it a crime to put him here?)

Nice taste

Gary Moore was definitely up there, excellent sound, reminds me of a combination of Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck

Slash
Robby Krieger

Also Dean DeLeo

James Hetfield as well

When it comes down to it there are loads of great guitarists. Not many Hendrix level, perhaps, but plenty of greats.
Excellent choices.

Maybe not the most skilled player, but undoubtedly the GOAT riff writer

it sure caught on though didnt it?

You're all wrong
Shawn Lane is GOAT

Dick Dale. Dude is a fucking monster. Also Andy Summers and Johnny Marr.
Pete was more of a songwriter than anything, but the dude's control of rhythm and harmony was out of this world.

Yes

Adrian Belew gets some amazing sound in this. You can see Tina Weymouth thinking wtf. Beautiful guitar playing.

He's a really underrated player. He's a great technical player but can play really emotional Gilmour style blues

What makes a "great" guitarist though?
Sound? Speed? Technicality? Song writing?

To me I guess they would need to possess a little of everything and be able to do it well.

Oh and my vote goes to Andy LaRocque
Love his style and sound and those fucking warbles he does is great.

Graham Coxon
