Why not both?

Leave.

name me one solo that makes them better than riffs

Comfortably Numb

Licks are better than riffs tho.

its impossible for something to not be better than a solo because solos are putrid they are offensive by their very nature

Bohemian Rhapsody

pinch harmonics over classic metal songs you didn't write>>>>all

*shreds your face off*

I've been playing guitar for like 8 years and I still don't know what the fuck a lick is. people just use it interchangeably with riff, so I just always say riff

You pick Tony Iommi as an example of why riffs are better than solos? Way to pick the ONE guitarist who's the exception to the rule, you dope.

ive been playing guitar for 5 years and ive never played a single solo

isnt a lick non-repetitive?

think how vocals/lyrics have lines, then a lick is basically the guitar equivalent of one line

t. pleb or 12 y/o
or both

Its a melodic pattern

Yet it's still true of any Gilmour solo

tony iommi is an underrated lead guitarist

Good chord sequences > Good tone > good solos > riffs > bad solos

i always thought a riff was a guitar piece that had lead notes and chords built into the same piece and played by 1 guitar

a lick is a small phrasing used as a lead but not as the main part

and a solo is a long series of notes played in sucession as its own part

Not in the metal community. He was voted the best guitarist of all time by Swedish Rock Magazine readers.

I think of it as a repetitive pattern that's typically used in a solo/lead line but yeah people use the word for basically any melodic phrase

True.
