The only way to know how bad the ratings actually are is to see how the advertisers react in the coming days and weeks. Judging by how people are reacting here in Massachusetts, I'd say the ratings are going to be the worst ever next week. People were getting up and walking out of bars when they saw half the Pats kneeling. I witnessed it for myself on Sunday, The bar I worked at is usually packed for NFL Sunday brunch, People got really angry and started talking shit about it amongst each other and eventually left, then it was dead all day long.
The reason ratings were slightly up is because some people watched the pre-games just to see what the players would do. Meanwhile, if you search youtube for "burn nfl" you will see hundreds of videos of people burning their NFL gear. One guy even put his Raiders flag in the cat's litter box for it to get pissed on.
