Does Sup Forums like the concept of having a high speed rail service in the US?

Angel Thomas

Ethan Wilson
Ethan Wilson

Nope

The US rail system is a mixture of old regional rails that are inefficient and expensive.

From Philadelphia to Boston I would have to transit between three different rails and overlay in New York wait for a train there and then head to Boston. All on a 200+ ticket

Angel Baker
Angel Baker

Biggest issue on that image is that the network goes into Mexico tbqh.

Brayden Nelson
Brayden Nelson

Beat me to it.
Also, don't run it through Pennsylvania. They've got the disappearing railroad blues.

Landon Smith
Landon Smith

Good idea in theory, horrible waste of taxpayer money in reality

Look how well Amtrak worked out. Granted, it wasn't a bad idea, but unlike Europe America's population density is much lower and a high speed rail system will just have less passengers but require more oil.

John James
John James

I'll tell you what, mate. There is some decrepit freight rail around, and I don't know if that's viable or not.

But you let me drive my car on to a train so that I can relax and you do the few hundred miles and I do the last tens of miles, then we've got ourselves a deal.

Brayden Butler
Brayden Butler

It's a great way to fatten up your wallet when you own the contract. Taxpayer raped again.

Xavier White
Xavier White

I don't like the idea of getting high speed rail just for the sake of being able to proclaim "Hey look we're just like the Europe too! We're so progressive!"

Never really understood liberals and their hard-on for trains in the 21st century. There are some areas where it might make sense. Most of the US is way too spread out and sparsely populated for it to be economical, though. Plus we already have pretty good motor vehicle and flight infrastructure.

Angel Diaz
Angel Diaz

didn't mean to quote

Evan Campbell
Evan Campbell

I like it in theory as long as the price to ride can be kept down. If it will end up being like current long distance rail then it will never get used. The purple line on that map is dumb though. You can't just run a high speed commuter line across international borders what are we Europe?

Daniel Anderson

The government already got involved in my high speed air service. I'd appreciate it if they didn't "contribute" to the rail service as well.

Ryder Fisher

Jack Kelly
Jack Kelly

Intercity passenger rail is something that only really happens on the East coast. Boston, NYC, Philly, Baltimore, DC. The rest of the nation is too spread out to make it competitive with air travel. It exists in the rest of the country, but it loses money, is sustained on subsidies, and not many people use it.

and unless they can make the price of a ticket lower than airfare, while keeping the speed very high (which means avoiding minor stops on the way, which is politically difficult) I don't see how passenger rail is viable outside the abovementioned corridor.

Levi Rivera
Levi Rivera

Yes. Modern technology needs to be implemented, we are a first world nation, even china has more modern transportation. We are VERY far behind in transportation.

Lincoln Martinez

Its a dumb idea. The US simply isn't the size of Japan or Sweden.

Here in Califonria we are trying to build a high speed train from San Francisco to LA. I don't know anyone that goes between those places often. We can't even get low speed rail connecting the LA area.

Jaxson Hughes

Well driving in my city sucks, but so does the mass transit. Fine by me if you want to keep it up, especially considering it was about to put the workers out of work when they tried to shut it down.

But that's not the same as long-distance travel. The freight trains near me could easily get stacked up with cars for nearly a mile and still toot along comfortably.

Aiden Anderson

I love trains, but the highest-speed passenger train in the US in the best possible route for a passenger train in the US -- the Acela -- is still a money-loser.

There is no evidence these new routes would do any better.

I wouldn't mind seeing Californians try a route LA - SF or LA - LV as long as it's with their own money, but I doubt it will be profitable.

I'm holding out for self-driving cars.

I like this idea, but how come every time I see it brought up people discuss it as if it would inevitably be some kind of taxpayer funded public works project? A private corporation could easily do this and I'd be willing to bet it would work out great and people would love it. As a government project it would be ridiculously inefficient. Is there any practical reason why a private company couldn't do this in the US?

Pic related are the only two lines that could exit profitably and the only two profitable. And the west coast is debated. It's an 18 hour drive LA to Seattle or a 2 hour flight.

Bentley Harris
Bentley Harris

No, it's fucking stupid.

Only about 10% of Americans live in the 100 largest cities in the United States. You'd need a fucking ridiculously elaborate HSR network to service those major population centers, travel times wouldn't be dramatically improved over direct flight-times (especially for routes that would need to go around major mountain ranges), and ultimately it would be spending trillions of dollars to benefit only about 1-in-10 Americans.

Ex. My family lives in Davenport, IA. I go to school at Auburn, AL. If I want to take the HSR described in the OP's pic home, I need to
1) Drive two hours to Atlanta
2) Spend an hour or two getting through the HSR security (because of course there will be security)
3) Ride the HSR from Atlanta to Chicago, about 6 hours.
4) Drive three hours from Chicago to Davenport

That's 13 hours assuming no delays. I can drive it in 14, with the added bonus of leaving when I want, stopping when I want, eating where I want, etc.

No private company would do it because it'd lose money. Plus for the network in op's pic it'd be impossibly expensive to purchase all the land and materials and to keep it maintained. It would be the most expensive thing in this countries history. would probably cost more than the highway system.

I don't understand why libtards have such a hard on for high speed rail.
Never really understood liberals and their hard-on for trains in the 21st century

It's more efficient in terms of fuel burned per passenger-mile. Thing is, most passengers don't care about that, they care about getting to their destination quickly, conveniently, or cheaply, or some combination of these. Greenery isn't a consideration for most. This divergence between what people want and what liberals think they should want is behind a lot of such projects. It's also why liberals hate highways and suburbs, for instance.

In CA the police and agencies are not as corrupt, but they're mean as fuck. Would rather deal with a fat, content NY cop any day.

But that's like if you were to stuff all of your country into one small part of ours. You know what else would be nice? All the unused freight rail running along the Island so we didn't all have to sit it wretched traffic because some asshole jew moron thought if they restricted the roadways then there would be less traffic.

Hsr competes with airlines.
It costs me less to take the train to haneda airport and take a flight to Osaka than it does taking the shinkansen. So you know 75 dollars vs 150 dollars.
And that's a distance of 500km. Here in the us I can fly from Evansville, indiana to orlando-sanford for 75 dollars. That's over 1000 miles. Think of that. Not to mention hsr maintenance is fucking silly. In Japan they replace over 30 miles of overhead line every night. Do you think government agencies are capable of that? We don't even have real hsr here.

Logan Carter

We have commercial airlines. Much faster even with tsa lines and such. And much cheaper and efficient if you know how to shop. A savy buyer can get NYC to lax for under a hundred bucks a passenger and get there in a third the time of a highspeed rail and a tenth that of regular rail , bus or car

How about a train traveling 350km/h max and averaging, say, 250km/h? If you don't live right next to a major airport, that's probably faster or not that much slower than a plane.

Say you wanna go from Seattle to LA. That's 1800km if memory serves me right. Let's call it 8h total travel. Flight is 2.5h. Add to that 1h getting to the airport. 1.5h security check/get to plane. Get from airport outside the city to your destination in LA for another hour. That's 6h min. Now if if you don't live next to the airport, you might need more time to get there. If you're in the middle between Seattle and LA, the train is definitely the better option. Comfy af, no lengthy security checks.

Brayden Ramirez

LA to SanFran is continuous earthquake fault zones that make high-speed rail dangerous and costly. You don't want to be on a high-speed train when the track gets bumped 1-1/2" out of alignment.

No. We prefer air travel. We have about as many airliners in the air over the US as the rest of the world combined at any given moment. I live in a small city in the middle of nowhere and we have about a dozen jets fly in and out of our airport daily.

Train and bus service in America rapidly became unpopular after Rosa Parks when niggers were allowed to sit their black asses down anywhere they pleased. Planes are more expensive and more complicated to schedule so while the black plague is present it's generally not in scary numbers on planes compared to ground transportation.

In Europe, yes. There is a train station in every city and village and the bullet trains (German ones up to 320kmh, French ones up to 350kmh) stop pretty much everywhere. If you were to create a high speed railway from scratch, you'd have to create a few railstations too, I suppose.

They attempted to make a light rail system here in WI a few years ago, thankfully, it was shot down.

The subsidization costs were FUCKING HUGE, with taxpayers having to pay for around $200 of each $235 ticked that was proposed for pricing from Milwaukee to Madison (about 80 minutes' drive in decent traffic), turning it into a total shitpile financially since the cost to build it was going to be near the billion dollar mark already.

The kicker? They were going to bring in primarily Spanish workers for the project instead of local companies, and it was expected to have fewer than 25 permanent jobs created that would be left for locals to take up once the project was done.

That's some major shit-in-the-mouth stuff on a small scale - now, take that nationally, and imagine the multi-trillion dollar nightmare it would be.

Problem is with these projects, once they begin, they never stop. They need to be stopped in their tracks once proposed.

Every fucking railroad scheme that the United States government has implemented, from the Transcontinental Railroad all the way to Portland's Tri-Met light rail network, has been a fucking disaster. Leftists proclaim "DUDE IT WILL PAY FOR ITSELF LMAO" and every fucking time expenses are dramatically hire, usage is dramatically lower, and quality is generally shit-tier (you know, despite the massive costs).

There's a very good reason why no company wants to privately build these things, it's because they've calculated it themselves and realize that it's fucking retarded.

Urbanism mainly. Communism likes having 1 city in control. Liberal faggots in America can't coordinate much because they're inherent compeditors for all the Porkbarrel spending. As such, a high speed rail is seen as the only way to force themselves to work together because it prevents traitorous cities from backstabbing other traitorous cities.

Communism at least ignores rural areas(except stalinism) but general urbanism like the liberals are pushing in America seeks to destroy rural areas and force people to live in big cities while using imperialism to turn other countries into population sources since people in urban centers don't reproduce.

Liam Diaz
Liam Diaz

How far out in advance do you have to book that one? Train ticket prices are relatively steady. Plus on a train you get more room. International flights aren't bad, but puddle jumpers are the worst... hot, cramped, stuffy and you're lucky to get a cup of water for your trouble. I took the KTX in Korea a couple times.. Guess what? WAY cheaper than a flight, got to stretch out and move around a bit after 13 hours in a window seat, got to see some countryside that I never would have time to have seen while I was there, no traffic jams, no ATC fuckups, no catastrophic depressurization and with RFID connected to all other modes of mass transit; switching from one mode of travel to another is relatively seamless. Also... The Jap HSR runs at 97% on-time or greater. KTX runs at %95 or greater. Can that be said about airways? You can talk all you want about how quickly you get from point A to B on a plane, but are you figuring in TSA, layovers, delays and time spent on the tarmac? I'd take a train any day. Also, take a look at some of Amtrak's continental tours.. Usually run around $1200 with food and lodging on the train included PLUS hotel stays at your layovers. Can Delta or Southwest give you a 10 day vacation seeing thousands of miles of our country, nearly all-inclusive for that price?

Lincoln Young
Lincoln Young

Feels comfy mang. We need more rail service, shit is amazing. Cheap as hell, $120 roundtrip for a thousand mile each way trip.

Jaxon Sanders

Then let's have a realistic discussion.

what's wrong with all the rail we already have? what needs to be done with it?
why can't I drive my car onto it like I can onto a ferry, which is also economically infeasible?
is the train going to be less expensive than loading my car on to a plane?
