I can't think of a single director who hasn't made an unoriginal work (adaptation or based on a true story). Can you?

Inception

What do I win?

Rian Johnson would have qualified until The Last Jedi, Edgar Wright until Scott Pilgrim, Tarantino until Jackie Brown...

Ridley Scott - Alien

What are you talking about? Inception is not a director.

Paprika copy

It's because Hollywood is afraid to engage with real story tellers

Ridley Scott made Blade Runner, The Martian, etc. based on books.

Terrence Malick?

That's not what original means here, don't be that dumbass. And I watch Paprika, it's shit.

ITT: Shit reading comprehension

Sorry, Nolan.

The New World is based on a true story m8.

THAT ONE DUDE THAT MADE BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW.
Its his only film, and it was original.

My bad

Nolan has made three films based on comics, one remake, a film based on a novel and a film based on a short story. So no, not Nolan.

>Shit reading comprehension
explain to me how alien isn't original

>tfw someone posts your reaction image from 2013

Why does time go so fast bros?

Sneaky.

Reread OP you thick shit. That wasn't the question.

I agree with you but I was just trying to say that inception was original. His other films are not original

I'm not just someone, I'm you from the past. Merry Christmas.

>I was just trying to say that inception was original

Why?

What in the FUCK did he mean by this?

Wong kar wai
Akira Kurosawa?

If we're going by OP's definition of unoriginal (he didn't put sequels) we can also add Jackie chan

David Lynch?

Me

Yo Throne of Blood and Ran are both based on Shakespeare

Ashes of Time is loosely based on a book. The Grandmaster is loosely based on a real person.

The Elephant Man is based on a real person. Wild at Heart is based on a novel.

this guy

He did a TV adaptation of The Castle.

Is the double negative just to confuse people?

Anyway I'll try Tarr, Haneke, and Chazelle

all art is based on the life experiences of the artist. whether those experiences are their own or told to them or just in a book they read. art without grounded context is called "modern art" and a lot of it stinks.

Haneke For Tarr, Satantango and Werckmeister Harmonies are both based on books, and the Turin Horse is based on supposed true events

Satantango was based on a novel.
Haneke made an adaptation of Kafka's The Castle.
Chazelle has worked on sequel screenplays but that doesn't really count. It's still quite early in his career, though.

I dom think it's a double negative because if you resolve them it changes the meaning of his proposal completely

He uses can't, hasn't, and unoriginal

He CAN think of any director who HAS made unoriginal work? That's not the original meaning

He can't think of any director who HAS made ORIGINAL work? That's not the same either, because there can be some original works but he's suggested all directors have at least 1 movie based on something

Etc

shane carruth.

I see. Perhaps: I can't think of any who has made only original works.

Chong?

Upstream Color is based on Troilus and Cressida.

Directors these days are such scumbag hacks, can't even write their own films so they have to steal some old outdated ideas. Only original ones are Ridley Scott, Mel Gibson and David Lynch.

...

Have you even seen Hacksaw Ridge?
