>destroys a planet engaged in active war against the empire that has a huge portion of rebel leadership there because assaulting it would take too long >wins in battle and kills numerous armed civilians who are revolting against a government that the majority of the galaxy voted into power >pure evil
>rebels blow up two space stations with hundreds of thousands of civilian contractors and workers on them >routinely sends poisoned food and chemical-laced supplies to sabotage imperials, resulting in widespread death and suffering >engages in bombings and shootings of property and imperial loyalists/soldiers to rile up the population >victories lead to the deaths of many soldiers just trying to serve their government or get paid, including loving fathers, husbands, sons in their quest to restore a corrupt monarchy under a power-hungry senator >pure heroic good guys
Reminder that the Empire did literally nothing wrong.

Matthew Cook
The EpIV novelization covers it.
Colton Martin
>destroys a planet engaged in active war against the empire that has a huge portion >rebels blow up two space stations with hundreds of thousands of civilian contractors and workers on them All of who are working on a legitimate military target. No one complains about WWII bombing campaigns that targeted industrial areas, it was those that were purely targeted at civilians as a form of terror that is controversial. A civilian can be involved in the war effort too, just because you are a civilian doesn't mean you can't be a legitimate target. The rebel attack on the death start is justified, they are forced to and it serves an immediate military goal. The Death Star blowing up Alderaan was an act of terror specifically designed to incite terror and achieved and served no military function.
>revolting against a government that the majority of the galaxy voted into power This never happened. Palpatine illegally extended his emergency powers to create an empire without any sort of vote.
Lincoln King
>Palpatine illegally extended his emergency powers to create an empire without any sort of vote The Senate voted to make him Emperor
Hudson Watson
This.
Nathaniel Edwards
Not in the movie. In the movie he just says he is making it an empire. They voted him emergency powers for a specific emergency, that is not voting in an emperor.
Jordan Parker
In the novelization it's explicitly stated that he's voted for. It's also made very clear in the film that the Senate supports him, it's not a coup.
Ryan Sanders
>Starts a crisis so he can become chancellor >Start a war leading both sides so he can gain emergency powers >Uses those emergency powers to create a military that only responds to him >Uses the army to exterminate all of his rivals >A senate that has been long established as incredibly corrupt supports him >No direct democratic vote >Not a coup Tbh I never gave a shit about the novels but whatever, I can understand if people want to use them to augment the movie.
Adrian Allen
>Alderaan in an active state of war with the Empire
Jonathan Price
I just checked, that novel isn't canon anymore. So in additional to everything else I said he was never voted for in any capacity and simply used his emergency powers to make himself emperor.
Robert Torres
>Starts a crisis so he can become chancellor >Start a war leading both sides so he can gain emergency powers >Uses those emergency powers to create a military that only responds to him >Uses the army to exterminate all of his rivals No one in the Rebellion knows that. >A senate that has been long established as incredibly corrupt supports him Irrelevant. >No direct democratic vote Last time I checked, that's how a republic works. Doesn't matter, it was designed as canon when the movie was made. Stover even consulted with Lucas during the writing of the book.
Austin Bailey
>No one in the Rebellion knows that I was responding to you saying it wasn't a coup, not justifying the actions of the Rebellion.
>Doesn't matter Yes it does, the book is no longer canon and therefore everything that happens in it which is independent of the film cannot be used to augment the events of the film. It's not up to use to decide the canon, it is up to Disney and it is not canon.
Levi Bell
>muh disney
Don't you have a subreddit to post on?
Caleb Parker
The Senate not voting on Palpatine becoming Emperor completely changes the implied state of the galaxy at the end of ROTS and completely removes any legitimacy for his rule, which is NOT what Lucas intended. In the movie you see that Palpatine has the full support of the senate and later on they literally say he needs the Senate to keep control of the galaxy.
Saying Palpatine was never elected because the book that explicitly says "Palpatine was elected" is no longer canon is asinine.
Juan Nelson
>it's another Disney Shill episode

Not canon
Jonathan Reyes
None of that changes the fact it was a coup. By not relinquishing his power when the war ended meant that any and all actions he makes using the emergency powers granted to him that were meant to last until the end of the war is illegitimate. Even if the senate supports him he still needs to be voted in as emperor because he doesn't have legal power to do it himself.
Lucas Hernandez
No, the Senate had the power to allow and ordain him as the Emperor. Only a handful opposed him, mainly the royal lines of Alderaan, as they lost their power they held in the pre-Palpatine days under him. Otherwise, he was legally voted into the position as an Imperial monarch,
Brody Diaz
But that information relies on non-canon sources. You can call it asinine but canon isn't set by what works, or authorial intent, or what we want. You can say you prefer the old canon, and you can say that you prefer that version of the story. That's fine. But it's not official which seems to be what you are stating.
To be clear what is and is not canon has nothing to do with
