The most popular scientist on TV is Neil Degrasse Tyson. The public is definitely ready for a black Scientist as a lead character.
I mean, they cast Michael B. Jordan to play another jock sports black guy. Isn't that still caving in to the Hollywood stereotype? What's the point of diversity casting when you're still going to stereotype them?
Hell, young NDT is basically Michael B. Jordan, and Fox owned the rights to Cosmos. They should have really capitalized on the le black scientist meme for this one.

The only reason that they would make Johnny Storm black and do that stupid half-sibling story is to rile up comic fans, it would have made WAY more sense to just make Reed black.
