It a long story but this is what happening.
A few years ago there was a law that said said in summary that if you made a channel the cable/sat people had to carry it. Combined that after BSG they found that people would watch shitty shows and movies that didn't cost anything and giggle at it.
This was a smart idea, except that the actual brand of Syfy suffered, as it became the home of shitty TV.
They changed the law recently and stations now how to show that they are worth carrying. Syfy found out from the carriers that the perception was that it was a shitty station that charged too much.
So they are putting millions down on higher quality stuff (such as the expanse) and working with overseas stations to produce original programming that isn't bad (Killjoys, Dark Matter with Canada) so they can show they are something more then just sharknadio.
They would make more money rerunning a bad film that cost them almost nothing then say, the Expense which might even be a loss for them, but the Expanse and the Magicians are actually the first time a Syfy series has had any buzz in almost 10 years.

I should pick up The Americans again, I think I stopped at the end of Season 2, I can't remember. I liked the show, but at the time there were too many shows I was trying to keep up with at the time. Thankfully 99% of those shows I have either dropped or they have come to an end, so it might be time.
I don't really care about the spoilers, 2bh, I can still enjoy a show even though I know someone whose death was overtly telegraphed while I was still watching it, has in fact been killed off
