Why are modern horror movies so mediocre?

When you're starved for good movies, mediocre movies like It Comes at Night get high marks

>hurr durr we da monsters

Since when is 88% mediocre. Mediocre is 50%

More like

It doesn't come at all

...

It is when those 88% are paid critics.

Not really the point, it was just painting a bleak scenario in which there really wasn't much hope for the family. If anything being kind and trusting is what killed them all.

this.

the trailers are blatantly false advertising.

What comes at night?

Because It Comes At Night isn't a horror movie?

Nightmares and grief for the wife's son.

nothing. it's marketed as a supernatural/monster horror movie but it's just a psycho thriller.

the cute boy dies

Can someone please spoon feed me on what the fuck happened in this movie?

Nothing. It tried to be all *we're focusing on what you can't see herp derp* which made it really fucking boring and stupid

> incredibly virulent disease
> some teacher and his wife and her son hide out in a friend's house
> grandpa dies of disease
> man comes and brings family
> this family's kid gets infected
> they resolve to kill the family as they will no doubt run away and steal their resources/ tell others of the location
> proceed to shit up execution, wife takes off gas mask for no reason
> all get infected and wait to die

Fuck, did he have to shoot a mother holding her child though?

The title is about the kid's wet dreams.

Who got infected first, the child or the negro?
Why or how was the red door opened when the keys were kept with the dad?
Why did the mom take her mask off for no reason?

It was heavily pointed out that only the dad or the mom will have the key and dad makes a point of always locking the door. but for the sake of the plot, now it's open and they get mad at the son, not the parents? I was expecting horror but go psychological thriller.

Did Will have to hold a gun to his head in his own home ?
Also what was up with the nigger lady with a rifle watching while the Mexican bashed her husband's face in ?
Fkin stupid leftist shit movie.

The child, people like to think travis got infected first because they want there to be an actual creature or something supernatural to the film like his nightmares actually being real.

In reality andrew showed all the signs before anyone else and unexplained things just reflect the viewpoint of the families - they don't have many answers or a grasp on the situation.

The mom took off her mask because she's a fucking idiot who didn't even really care to save her husband from being beaten to death.

>family hide inna woods due to mystery illness wiping out most of the world
>live normally until one of the family members (the wife's father) becomes ill, they kill him and burn him due to the infection
>that night a dude breaks in (called Will) and said he didn't know it was occupied afte rbeing caught and tied up outside by the man of the house (Paul)
>Paul's wife goes 'oh let him and his family live with us so we can defend it better'
>Paul goes with Will to get family, ambushed, they kill the men, Paul accuses Will of setting it up and Will goes 'but i fought too faggot'
>The family live together and trust and normalcy builds, the only way into the house is one door and the only people who have a key are Paul, his wife and their son
>One day the family dog runs into the woods barking and their son (Travis) and the other families son follow it, they don't find it and go home
>That night Paul has nightmares and his son has nightmares or some shit and he hears something downstairs, finding the door unlocked and open and the dog dying of wounds on the floor
>he kills it and his wife suggests their son Travis opened it in his sleep
>distrust settles in
>Will and his Wife (Kim) want to leave now so demand to be given half the food and water so they can go
>After being locked in their rooms in case of infection, they eventually all come out and there's a fight
>Will is killed by Paul's wife, so his Will's son, his wife begs to be killed by Paul to be put out of her misery and Paul kills her
>Travis then vomits blood and shows he is infected, his mother is also sick and she comforts him as he dies
>Paul and his wife (Sarah) then sit in silence at the dinner table, both infected
>End

That's it.

nothing. there's no monsters. it's a shitty drama film that loves the smell of its own farts

I'm willing to buy all of that stupidity but I still don't understand how the red door was locked with the key worn around the dad's neck but suddenly one night Travis finds the red door unlocked and opened.

brap

You don't like the smell of your own farts? What kind of weirdo are you?

Kim says Andrew might have opened it in his sleep or some shit, I can't remember.

The dog doesn't necessarily have wounds, it seems infected with the sores and they burn it accordingly. Also distrust settles in because it's suspected that Andrew might have gone outside the house whilst sleeping and it would be safe for them all to be in quarantine.

During this quarantine travis hears panic and coughing from the other room and listens in on andrew coughing and crying. At this point the other family understand andrew is infected and put on their gear to go confront them. The other family is planning on leaving because they know staying means they will all be killed or at least kicked out - if they leave they can take some of the food and water and go.

I love the smell of my own, I'm just not so arrogant that I think other people would enjoy it too especially to the point where I put it on film and demand people pay to experience it

In the tension and paranoia of the situation some things are left unanswered. Like Will's statement about his brother - it doesn't get revealed what was true. The families aren't in a position to really work out what is happening.

So can we discuss the whole Missing 411 spooky shit in the movie? Although tney're only theories, but good ones nonetheless.
>kid chases dog into the woods and stands frozen at the sight of something off camera
>later draws what he saw, some spooky dark forest spirit looking things
>an unknown party breaks the dog back imto the house after injuring it, or helping it back into the house
>later, another drawing of a different type of entity can be seen in the room of the youngest kid
>green things with antlers(? It's been a while)
>maybe delivering messages through the black kid's nightmares
Basically it goes that while the virus and the infighting are going on, there are indeed entities in the woods watching all the while.

What were they barking at bros?

But it was a fantastic movie, you idiot. That's what you get for watching trailers. I went in completly blind and I was amazed, it was a great, incredibly tense movie.

so what comes at night? movie didn't explain

Me on the left

watch more film faggot this movie is 1 star garbage

Fuck off just because you desperately need a monster it doesn't mean you can inject it anywhere you want.

> When travis runs after the dog during the day he stops but isn't terrified, that's during a nightmare later he feels he sees something horrible.
> His drawings are figures in gas masks, like they wear all the time - the entire point is how traumatized he is by what's happening.
> We don't know how the dog got in but it's suggested andrew got out and became infected but the family has no time to investigate any of this
> kids drawing

am I on reddit
why do I still bother trying to discuss movies on this fucking website

The horror of the situation. During the day they are occupied but at night travis is wrought with nightmares and grief. The director wrote it after the death of his father.

He was deawing world war one era soldiers with gas masks on. If you look closely there's a world wr onecera trench club hanging above his bed. I think Travis just likes things from that era desu.

There has not been a single buzzword-free argument against the film since it release, only meaningless "boring and nothing happens" comments.

Well, that's vague

>imblying it's not open to interpretation

That's reasonable, but it's the same thing - it's easier and more horror orientated to draw those masks than their bulkier ones. The point is still that he is suffering greatly from the experiences.

Well, it is boring and nothing happens

I don't think so, when you are depressed or grieving the night is the worst because there's nothing but your thoughts.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Boring is not a valid arguement, it only says what your mood was while watching it.
Same as saying "it was fun", it does not indicate anything about the actual quality of the film.

Also there is something happening literally from the start right until the end.

legitimately terrifying

>Boring is not a valid arguement, i
It is
>Same as saying "it was fun", it does not indicate anything
It is

Most people in general would say Marvel flicks are "fun" and Tarkovsky films are "boring".
You go on and pretend like that indicates anything about the quality of each of them.

Yeah this makes you 8% of people who didn't like Hacksaw Ridge, however 92% is more than 8%

Garfield is shit and so was that flick, Mel.

>Most people in general would say Marvel flicks are "fun" and Tarkovsky films are "boring".
Well, they're right.

Horror as a genre has come to such shit that it is considered as a separate thing from film by the general audience.

Like when you go to see a horror, the majority of the audience judges the movies completely different from than an action/thriller/drama with hard preconcieved expectations of what it should be. It's like all the movie elements dissapear and the only measurement of quality of the movie is how many times you got "spooked". It's almost like a rollercoaster ride, not a movie for them.
Same thing happens with every movie that get's the "horror" tag but isn't the usual jumpscare fest. The studio had to market It Comes at Night (just like The Witch) as a "scare" horror movie so more people would see it, and when they actually watch it they don't care about the family relations and character development and the general sense of suspense and tension etc, they just want to get some loud noises after a few seconds of silence every now and then and go home happy "hehe that was spooky"

It's quite sad really.

>majority of the audience judges the movies completely different from than an action/thriller/drama with hard preconcieved expectations of what it should be. I
That's apply to every other genre

Not really, if you go see a thriller/drama and half of the movie has comedic or horror elements no one will complain if it fit's the narrative, while in horror if it doesn't follow the usual structure everyone will complain, it has to be a specific kind of film for the general audience to like it.

Yeah, no. You speak about false advertisement, it's not horror's specific. I remember when some people were dissapointed cause Drive wasn't Fast and Furious-tier action

the monsters were skinwalkers that have the illness near them and they can visit peoples dreams

they haunted the house and forest

yeah no

Is this film the ultimate pleb filter?

this. the trailers and ads used to be a good guide as to whether a movie is the kind of movie you would enjoy watching. these days trailers and ads trick you into watching a movie making you think it's a ghost story movie but it's actually a hallucinating person movie.

how come will and the 2 ambushers survived in the forest at night even though its established that the monsters roam at night, its pretty bad ass that will was just climbing through windows not giving a fuck when there were big monsters who could also open doors and kill dogs in the dark near him

>even though its established that the monsters roam at night
No it isn't, not a single monster was "established" in the entire film, that's all just your headcanon.

much scare
such spook

WHY DID THEY KILL DOGGO FUCK YOU DOGGER KILLERS MAY FLEAS INFEST YOUR EARS

wait. why am i angry? i'm a cat. damn you, Sup Forums. DAMN YOU.

the dog ran after a monster that it sensed

the monster attacked the dog and made it whimper, the monsters seemed to bite the dog and also made it sick

the monsters may be able to haunt peoples dreams, they were hiding just out of sight but at night they approach the house

88% translates to "88% of critics gave the film above a 5/10 scored", it doesn't mean 8.8/10.

he was barking at G-d

>Can someone please spoon feed me on what the fuck happened in this movie?

Movie of isolated family. You expect something to attack.

>More like
>It doesn't come at all

Exactly, nothing comes to attack. The "it" that "comes at night" are the nightmares of someone already infected.

Maybe the dog ran after a bear. After an another human, whatever.
You only think it was a monster because it's marketed as a horror film

What do you mean ? The horror just doesn't mean "turture porn", though. Do you remember "Blair Witch Project" ? Good horror gets you enjoy horrific atmosphere.

That was psychological torture porn against actors.

...

Classic normie proves RT viral marketing worked big time. A couple of years ago we didn't even talk about RT.
