Inherent Vice

What did Sup Forums think of this film?

Fucking atrocious jumbled incoherent mess.

Incomprehensible shit, not in a good way

Actual Plebs

NO U

It's honestly one of the most pretentious films I've ever seen.

pynchon is for faggots that are dumb but want to pretend theyre smart.

naked lunch tier pseud trash.

I didn't understand it. So I hate it.

I liked it, but it's also a little bit of a slog. It looks nice and it's got a cool 70s-stoner vibe, but it's too long, shallow, and convoluted to be a particularly engrossing watch.

It's an improvement on The Master though, I absolutely hated that one. I do wish PTA would go back to more "straightforward" movies like Boogie Nights.

I met Joanna Newsom, ama

LITERALLY what every fucking faggot says to defend this.

I wrote a paper on this book, it fucking sucks. i got a good grade on it too. its not that i dont 'understand it'. its just shit. pynchon is shit.

>first sentence 100% true
>second sentence 100% pleb
what did he mean by this

Had some great moments, but used its time really poorly. Went for a narrative way of conveying wackiness rather than filmographic (something closer to fear and loathing would have made it a lot more watchable)

reminds me of tinker tailor soldier spy in that you only know what's going on the first 90% of the movie if you read the book

>It's an improvement over The Master
You've got extremely poor taste.

>movie/book is about the CIA jumpstarting the hard drug industry in the US to inoculate lower classes against communist sentiment.

>ITS INCOMPREHENSIBLE!
>ITS INCOHERANT!
>ITS A MESS!
>ITS PRETENTIOUS!

... hmm

what was the class because thats how we can judge your sentence based on how the class would judge your paper. you could have just been in english class and got a high score because of how well it was written with english and grammar

The Master would have been better if it wasn't based on 1/3 of the original screenplay.

you don't have a better idea of what's going on if you read the book either

Because it takes places entirely from the perspective of a man caught up in a huge CIA operation to get the poor chasing hard drugs and/or the money involved instead of realizing they're oppressed. Also to re-divide the races after civil rights. Also to keep the rich from realizing they've got the resources to make the world a better (read: less capitalist) place. Basically its about the CIA killing all the individual aspects of the American dream in order to win an ideological war that they lose anyway by annihilating everything america was supposed to stand for.

the ending made me cry, it hit so close to home

it's a masterful movie, i liked it a lot

It was pretty good. I'm kinda dissapointed they cut out the Las Vegas subplot from the book.

Show yourself, Pinecone. I know you're lurking.

Another fat fucking goose egg from psued-king anderson about a book by his literary equivalent. 20-something """socialists""" should love it though so good for him

what's your favourite colour?

It was really fucking hard to follow, I had to get subtitles in my native language because I had no fucking idea what is going on from first scenes.

Once I got the basics of the plot I had enjoyable movie with aesthetics and likeable protag.

Mystifying, relaxing and beautiul.

I hate to mimic the whole "its best if you just go along for the ride mantra" but its mostly true simply because the the majority of the good things it offers are just fun moments. Poeple can meme all they want about silliness being stupid, but the movie was full of wacky, entertaining moments, and having a cohesive plot isn't that important here because the good parts of the movie have nothing to do with actually understanding what is happening.

It can definitely never be anything great or even very good for me though. 90% of the movie did nothing to further its own themes, and the few that did, though delivered effectively in that unreal sort of 'over the top without feeling like it realizes how over the top it is' kind of feeling that I love from a lot of PTA movies, really feel like they are just there to infuse meaning into a film that would have none otherwise. So you get a few moments that feel like they should be cathartic, but otherwise just a series of enjoyable moments and characters. As hard as it is to follow, if you can manage to just sort of let go, and you want a nice enjoyable ride that offers something different with a hint of poignancy, but mostly just a fun little ride, its worth a viewing. Worst PTA film but not his least interesting.

Subtitles necessary.

oddly enough, that makes it a good interpretation of the book (as someone who read it before I watched the film)

...

I found it boring but I occasionally get the urge to watch it again. My mind is convinced it will be fun second time around.

confusing, but fucking funny sometimes (like, ''fat Tom Cruise'' funny)

Some of the best dialogue I've ever seen. Not many movies out there that got me to laugh explosively dozens of times but this one did.

I liked it. Obvious Big Lebowski homage but did its own thing too.
I really liked it.

Shows hollywood isn't completely dead at least.

I laughed at the picture when I first realized it was a shoop but it's kind of unsettling the more I look at it.

Shoopkino

As a scathing indictment of the war on drugs it works. But if you don't get that then you don't get it. period.

was it rape?

entertaining remake of The Big Lewbowski
