As real or anyone else. I mean, you could have a conversation with her without noticing that she isn't an actual human beingt which means that, for all intents and purposes, she's a real person. She's sentient and capable of communication and responding to conversation the way and actual human being would... except for the lack of a physical body she's as real as any replicant or human.

Yes.

She is meant to be analogous to a Replicant for K. She's a product, built for a purpose by Wallace. However, she like Replicants, expanded beyond her design. She has free will. She was genuinely excited when he brought the emanator home. she experienced feelings of wonder and joy when she stood outside in the rain. She even understood that K's serial number isn't sufficient as a legitimate name and encouraged him to adopt another. She chose to enter the emanator and risk her safety just to stay with K. She desperately exclaimed her feelings towards him right before she got killed.

Patricians ignoring the basic themes of the movie and genre.

she's human because that's the whole fucking point of Bladerunner you idiot. She's "more human than human". Just like a Replicant.

I dunno. Does that matter to the question at hand? There are people with severe mental disabilities that limit their understanding of the world and how to react to it. Would you say an elderly person with severe Dementia is any less "real" just because they don't recognize the world aroung them.

Sure, a lot of Joi's behaviour is predetermined by her programming but the same applies to humans. You don't decide to react to a soccer ball flying at you face by stopping it with your hand, it's what you programmed to do.

She even understood that K's serial number isn't sufficient as a legitimate name and encouraged him to adopt another

When Luv introduced herself to K, he remarked that her master must really like her to have given her a name. He has the idea in his head that being given a name is something desirable. Joi's able to figure out a lot about what K wants to hear so she realizes this and starts calling him by a "proper" name.

Because she was first bound to technology built into his apartment and later on to technology he was carrying around with him.

But even if that wasn't the case: Sure, you can argue that she's less self determined than a human being but more so than most animals.

Take dogs, a species living in a symbiotic relationship with humans. Sure, a dog couldn't make the decision to leave his owner or live on its own but it's nevertheless a living creature. Joi couldn't make that decision either, she's probably hard coded to love her owner unconditionally (And I don't wanna think about how many people in that world abuse their Joi purposefully, knowing they will just take it) but she's still more self determined than an animal reacting only according to instincts, she's capable of conscious decisions, even if they are more limited than that of a human or a replicant.

Fucking pathetic. She was programmed to give him everything he wanted, she wasn't acting consciously. Every single decision she makes is about giving K what he wants. You're inflating that there is something arbitrary and mundane about feeling special, and it is equal to you, and as boring to you as putting clothes on. True
She's a product, built for a purpose by Wallace.
True
However, she like Replicants, expanded beyond her design.
Nope, different tech. Replicants are Genetic/Clones. Also if Joi used a cloud/networked AI technology would you still claim she had personhood?
She has free will. She was genuinely excited when he brought the emanator home. she experienced feelings of wonder and joy when she stood outside in the rain.
Scripted, this is pretty much an unboxing .
She even understood that K's serial number isn't sufficient as a legitimate name and encouraged him to adopt another.
She uses a kind of predictive/faux empathic A.I. She's designed to tell you what you want to hear. She might even have something (at least functionally) like a neural link to K.
She chose to enter the emanator and risk her safety just to stay with K.
Same. It seems extraordinary because K. is pretty much using JOI wrong the entire time. Literally anything you ask her to do she will oblige.
She desperately exclaimed her feelings towards him right before she got killed.

Adam Scott

The dilapidated erotic statues, the ruins of Las Vegas, the malfunctioning holograms of Elvis and the dancers, this imagery constituted a core motif of the film; the transient nature of gratification. In K's search for identity he is confronted with several false temptations for which ultimately rejects. What you waifu-addled fags are misunderstanding is that K's rejection of Joi is meant to symbolise K's rejection of the shallow affection Joi offered, or more broadly of the cheap gratification the film had been critiquing up to that point. Why else would Denis bombard the audience with Joi's advertisement, reading "EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO HEAR" and "EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO SEE". Why else would the screenwriters include the prostitute telling Joi there's not as much to her as she thinks. Why else they include K telling Joi that she "doesn't have to say that". Why else is Joi depicted as giant, alien and monstrous in that iconic scene. Why else does K look so crestfallen when the advertisement calls him "Joe". Hell, K's decision is mirrored when Deckard rejects Rachel's clone replicant to protect his daughter. They could not have made it more obvious that Joi is a shallow, corporate product meant to verbally fellatio the consumer, but the retards on Sup Forums still misinterpreted it.

Yeah obviously. But the result was clearly that she grew beyond that baseline.

Your interpretation is insanely stupid and warped. You're an idiot who is willfully ignoring EVERYTHING about one of the most interesting characters in the movie, just to serve some sort of idiot agenda about how K get "redpilled" by the giant hologram and does everything because of that.

Juan Rodriguez
Juan Rodriguez

everything is explained by her doing the thing because it is what she thinks K wants. a real person actually has motivations of their own and a real partnership is about meshing those motivations. it is a relationship's greatest source of joy (no pun) and also its greatest source of conflict. to be in a state where you would do anything for your love BUT ALSO they would do the same for you -- to share in the wins and the losses. K and joi's "relationship" was completely one sided, she never had a motivation and he never wanted to do anything for her because she had no motivation, that is why he rejected her. and that is what made him human in, doing things for others and having his own motivations.

you can say that "well doesn't that make joi MORE human? all she did was serve others" but joi never had an internal struggle of her own motivations/desires vs. the desires of others. humans are selfish but we are able to do things for others that is in conflict with our nature and that elevates us. joi would only become real if she truly had her own motivations and desires. this is what K gained, he gained his desire to be a real boy. but he truly became real when he embraced the struggle of being human and having your own wishes and STILL acting against them for others

i feel like i restated the same point 10 times in different ways and didn't really effectively communicate my point but whatever

Nolan Barnes
Nolan Barnes

Yeah because you've only understood HALF the story. Almost nothing you said was wrong, except for your amazingly stupendously idiotic ability to ignore the fact that what you said can be true at the same time as Joi being properly alive and self aware can be true.

Why else would the screenwriters include the prostitute telling Joi there's not as much to her as she thinks
Because she's insecure.

Charles Young
Charles Young

I'd agree, considering they're the only things we can ever be sure of. I think the quandary presented to replicants about how much of them is pre-programmed and how much is actual choice is basically analogous to the same issues we as humans ponder over.

She is a very simple program, K is thinking it, supposes it, or it's implied or inferred and she goes along with it. Her HOLO threesome likely is pretty unremarkable and mundane event compared to the twisted shit. Hell the hooker prolly has performed them dozens of times.

all what she was programmed to do. joi cannot die, why are you using that as an example of her having a motivation? if there was no K then joi would be useless. she is different from a replicant -- her entire programming is to please K, so you use examples of her pleasing K as proof she escaped her programming? K is programmed to obey, he disobeys because he gains motivations and desires that are directly contradictory to his programming. that is what makes him different from joi

During the final scene, we see Deckard's child making a memory of snow, looking at her hand the exact same way that K did the first time he left her office. What is the significance of this?
What is their connection?

This is known as a reductio ad absurdum in case you don't see this as an argument. K bought it for himself
K has forgotten that his holographic waifu isn't real
K acts as if holographic waifu is real
K feels for holographic waifu as if she's real
K tells himself and his holographic waifu that it's a present for her

We actually have a real-life analogue in the form of the domestic cat. You have seen people act as if the cat loves them. You have seen people buy things "for the cat" when they're actually things to make the cat more entertaining for themselves.
The cat does not love its owner. The cat does not give a single solitary fuck about its owner. The cat is not a very social animal and is not capable of understanding its owner's feelings, or of feeling much affection towards its owner. The cat has a cute face with a small mouth and big eyes. The cat takes advantage of human weakness for small mouth and big eyes to get food and shelter.
Humans take advantage of the cat's proficiency at killing rodents. Everyone wins but the cat doesn't love you back. Neither does Joi.

ヴォレフワー (vorefuwaa) is just my guess for what the Katakana is supposed to be. The font and the colors makes it really hard for me to read and I haven't been able to find any clearer images. It could also say the first part could be vore or uore and the second part could but fuwaa, buwaa, or puwaa. It's hard to tell but it doesn't look like there's any diacritics. I was just hoping "volez foi" would jog some memories.

loving someone means you don't have any selfish desires

you cannot love someone if you don't have any selfish desires to contend with. if you have nothing to sacrifice you have nothing to offer. by this i don't mean your life (not that joi has a life to lose in the sense K does), i mean your interests, your dreams, your goals. sharing in and compromising these things are what makes a true relationship. the struggle between your goals and your partner's goals. joi didn't have goals so joi (and K) did not have to sacrifice. being alive is not a goal/desire/wish i am talking about, it is more than that that makes human relationships unique

Daniel Wilson

Maybe. I think they try to leave it ambiguous because the science on the matter is pretty ambiguous as well

The problem with lobotomizing the human brain (whether it's via chemicals or physical defects) is that modern neuroscience now has a general consensus that the neuroplasticity of the brain itself is far more complex and active than previously thought.

This means that if they are trying to shut down the areas of the brain they think are responsible for empathy or sentience, what really happens is that other areas of the brain will reorganize themselves to compensate for what it detects it is lacking. Replicants are meant to seem human, have human memories, give human responses, etc in order to satisfy their customers more, and the only way we know if today to shut down free will almost entirely is to make them too stupid to function without the assistance from others.

Michael Rogers

Nathaniel Adams

This movie was anti single white man propaganda. Waifu got destroyed both physicly and theoreticly. K sacrificed himself for a baby boomer and his kid.
Wors thing is they are giving value to his sacrifice, this suicidal bullshit, and devaluation of life is disgusting. In the end he died for his human masters.

Dylan Allen
Dylan Allen

If Joi is a chinese room then Rachel is one too based on what Wallace said about her.

Social Darwinism
that and communism is literally babbys first philosophy

Mason Martin

I dunno, why can't you into following a narrative and what a film is telling you?

Non-retard interpretations
Joi was fake
Joi's reality was supposed to be ambiguous

Complete moronic waifufag interpretation
Joi is 100% and the film expressly suggesting she isn't is all bullshit lalala I can't hear you

Kayden Morgan
Kayden Morgan

Yeah so? That's true too.

Sebastian Garcia
Sebastian Garcia

This is something I can read and say "I respectfully disagree"

This is a valid way of looking at it in it's own way. I still think she was real and alive to some degree though.

Jackson Morgan

Did anyone else find it weird that there were so few flying cars?

Connor Morris
Connor Morris

Except all the giant hologram said was essentially
Hey big boy , you want to buy me?
It was an ad. JOI is obviously designed with a degree of sentience to learn about her users and make them feel complete, which is all *anyone* can do in a relationship because of our limitations to communicate our true feelings.

Dylan Watson
Dylan Watson

stop taking polpills
go for a walk

Nathaniel Smith
Nathaniel Smith

how did they film this scene?

Dominic Gray
Dominic Gray

that is how he felt

Bingo. But then he started believing he's a real boy and started living real life. At some point it turned out he was able to act , to be human, despite being just a replicant all along.

In the meantime Joi was and remained a chatbox, an image what he believed himself to be

Angel Hernandez
Angel Hernandez

The only thing I'm really lost on is whether he died at the end. I think he did, my girlfriend doesn't. What's the verdict?

Matthew Peterson
Matthew Peterson

The blackout killed a lot of people when the flying cars dropped. It was in the short stories set between the movies.

Thomas Scott
Thomas Scott

Yeah! Darn those humans and their anti waifu propaganda

Austin Perez

Most people have no clue about either, in fact most "communists" today are just liberals LARP'ing about leftists. You don't even have genuine communists anymore you have a mix between socdems, demsocs, and welfare capitalists. Social Darwinism isn't worshipped by anyone except the most extreme of ancap LARP'ers.

Nothing about today's consumeristic and rebellious youth today is appealed to by authority and aristocracy.

Thomas Jenkins
Thomas Jenkins

Very carefully

Basically what they did in rogue one but better because not Disney

You've probably read quite a few posts about that seeing as it was pivotal to K's journey and widely discussed.

Dominic Ward
Dominic Ward

At some point it turned out he was able to act , to be human, despite being just a replicant all along
Then the joi scene would have no meaning. Because the impetus for his growth would be him realizing that he could act human despite being the chosen one. What the did the Joi scene add then?

He realized he was a human and could do human things already. He didn't need the Joi scene to go save Deckard then.

Jonathan Collins
Jonathan Collins

The music = he died

Christopher Wilson
Christopher Wilson

she is written as a human-character it's only in the first scene that she is acting as n AI companion, but she is just roleplaying that 50s house wife. She shows opinions, feellings, agency. If she is tied to a program it states only that she is dedicated to her owner.

Aiden Hill
Aiden Hill

Actually waifu aren't even that important. They devalue K's worth to the point where him sacificing himself so the half dead old man can see his daughter for a moment is considered a human thing to do.
Your waifu is not, real, you are worthless so just sacrifice yourself for happiness of others.

Angel Adams
Angel Adams

The standard reply will be
Everything you want to see
Everything you want to hear
Based on a Wallace Ad which should have 0 bearing on the reality since they also sell replicants which I am sure are not advertised as being able to rebel.

Juan Bailey
Juan Bailey

Yeah I just skimmed it right now, basically
Sentience can't be complete in AI's based on my arbitrary definition of what counts as sentience that I treat as being axiomatic

Kayden Bailey
Kayden Bailey

Such awful marketing. I went in expecting a generic sci-fi film. I almost considered not going to watch this film

Lincoln Miller
Lincoln Miller

Why is it a human thing to do?
I don't get it. Why is that a human thing to do? Where did K get that idea from? Where did he get his concept of humanity from given that he doesn't interact much with humans outside his boss and maybe 5 minutes with Deckard.

Jeremiah Brown
Jeremiah Brown

I assumed he didn't, since he seemed to walk and talk just fine even after giving Deckard a ride to the girl's place. I guess he was slowly bleeding to death the entire time and the snow not melting on his cold hand should've been the obvious clue.

Anyway, one of the writers confirmed that he did die.

Are we to believe by the end of the film that K is dead?
I was surprised to find out that anyone thought he didn’t die. And I can say this: the non-casual fan might recognize the music cue that plays in that moment.

Oliver Johnson
Oliver Johnson

To me it just strengthened his notion ł, reminding him what he thought he was at the beginning and what he held dear, and how insignificant and futile it was

Alexander Lee
Alexander Lee

Why didn't K check under his eye for a serial number? If he had one then he definitely wasn't the child

Ryan Barnes
Ryan Barnes

That one eyed android lady told him that sacrificing yourself for a cause is the most human thing slave android can do. And so slave android gave up his life for the sake of humans. He didn't stand up for himself and became a real boi.

Caleb Jones
Caleb Jones

But he wants to believe that he is.

Wyatt Nguyen
Wyatt Nguyen

mfw all those CCCP signs, Celina and Nabokov
For what purpose?

Julian Perez
Julian Perez

that user is way off. The Joi ad just made him want to get revenge on Luv, and he justified it to himself by recalling things that the rebels told him. He took Deckard to his daughter after because he was one of the only replicants who knew who she was, and he wanted to pass the information to Deckard before he died.

Angel Gomez
Angel Gomez

no he doesn't. If he wasn't the child then he wouldn't be the target of his own mission.

Samuel Johnson
Samuel Johnson

its possible that this music was used to temp the film, good catch.

Luke Butler
Luke Butler

You missed his character completely user.

Sebastian Gomez
Sebastian Gomez

He was way off baseline, probably didn't cross his mind

Jack Ward
Jack Ward

You cant fucking duplicate dna of a girl and get a boy, it literally has a sex-defining difference. Also there is no way a human and a rep can share the dna unless reps cells dont procreate the same way real cells do.

Oliver Russell
Oliver Russell

no, you did. K never wanted any of that shit, he's an obedient model. He would have been fine just going back to work and living with Joi if that were an option.

Nathan White
Nathan White

You missed the entire point of the movie it seems

Blake Fisher
Blake Fisher

Anyway this movie is devoid of any philosophical value. It's just the old what doth lyfe bullshit that was done to death. All those dumb stories about free choice end with the hero sacrificing himself like a bitch.

Dylan Gray
Dylan Gray

It's ridiculous misinterpretation.

Michael Myers

Second signature looks like it start with an M or a japanese symbol.
I'm searching on Kuciara's twitter but he's spamming with his ghost in the shell concept, no mention of blade runner

Camden Bell
Camden Bell

That's kinda weak, he does lose his shit when he finds out the memory isn't his and at first when talking to Joi he doesn't want to be the child

Unless subconsciously he did and just never checked

Oliver Torres
Oliver Torres

Not existentalism, only the generic antihuman sudicial bullshit that puts impulsive emotional behaviour over self preservation and pursuit of individuality.

Zachary Reyes
Zachary Reyes

that's because the boy is a fabrication. There never was a twin boy

then why did he get so visibly angry when he confirmed that the memory was real? Because he found out he either had to kill himself / turn himself in or lie about his mission. Sure, he thinks it's great that he is the child, but he'd much rather not be it if it means he'll have to lose his old life.

Wyatt Parker
Wyatt Parker

No , it's literally an examination of sentience in an overall absurd world, whose answer to the absurdity is to simply find the strength to struggle on and find your own end.

That's essential Existentialism

Noah Cox
Noah Cox

I don't know. Ask her.

Blake Hernandez
Blake Hernandez

He blatantly wanted it, that's a major point of the film

That said if he was going to be faked as a normal replicant, he'd be set up with a fake serial number too

Jaxon Reyes
Jaxon Reyes

Nów your stance makes more sense. It's not, simply like you said earlier
he doesn't want to be the child.

He's conflicted about it. He wants to because he wants to be real human that was born and ha dchildhood, that isn't just a manufactured slave Bo 1038838337. In the meantime he realise that it is absolutely impossible, and that would me he has to turn himself in.

Aiden Moore
Aiden Moore

yes and the answear is as alwayes gaining meaning/value/your own end by sacrificing yourself
Wow i am so human, i will act against my survival instinct and get myself killed for the sake of fleeting emotions or benefit of others
