So I haven't read any of the Wendig trilogy. I'm enjoying the new canon, but I've stuck to all the OT-time-period stuff.
So I know that Wendig gets a ton of hate on here. I've seen all the 'herkily jerkily crap' but don't really know much beyond that.
Is it actually worth investing all the time required to sit through a trilogy of novels, or should I just get the gist of it and all the hints at later stories/ST setup from YouTube videos with titles like '10 most mysterious mysteries of the unknown regions Snoke Origins Revealed - Star Wars Clarified'?

Imagine an ok to good story written by a 5th grader. That's the Aftermath trilogy.
Those books are objective trash in every sense of the word. Truly a sign of how little Lucasfilm and Del Rey care that ant of it even got published. Just skim the wiki if you want the rundown, but it's not even important enough to bother doing that with.
Don't read them. It's honestly better to just get summaries of what happens. The events themselves are inoffensive, but the writing style is painful.
His style of writing oddly lends itself well to the audiobook format, since it makes it sound more like a radio play than a standard audiobook. That said, it's still boring.
I wouldn't recommend the second one unless your very life depended upon it. No one deserves to have to rely on that shite to enjoy their Star Wars
My advice would be, hit up the MEGA and grab the Aftermath novels, get yourself a free epub reader and give them a try. Worst case scenario, you've wasted some bandwith
Failing that, or if you just can't be doing with reading them after trying them, hit up the Wook for a general overview, and then lurk about here and pick up what's important through osmosis

You aren't going to learn jack shit from an idiot on youtube. The plots are important and useful and not, strictly speaking, bad. Give the first book a try and if you can get past Wendig's 10th grade writing skills and cringey tumblr lexicon then you might want to read the other two. If you can't tolerate the purple prose (which you probably won't), then the wookieepedia plot summaries will likely be good enough.

Thanks for the advice, gentle anons. I think the consensus is pretty clear. I think I'll at least give the first one a go. Just for the sake of completeness. Audiobook sounds like a good idea. I have a lot of weeding to do in my garden coming up and if it's not too awful I'll see if it can help pass the time.
I honestly can't stand most star wars YouTubers, frankly, so I'd rather avoid them if possible.
They chose a guy who seemed like a fan (he clearly loves Star Wars but he's too attached to what HE thinks it is to work) who could also shit out three full length novels in just under 18 months. And the second part was a lot more important to them
They fucked up, but the fact he's not been asked back while people like Gray, Luceno and even Zahn have picked up books since makes me think they realized their mistake. Aftermath should have been a multi-author effort, like the movies

If you are a normie, you might not get too offended by Wendig's trash style, and be capable of enjoying all three novels. I hear that the author's "voice" get less shitty as he progresses, but I can't confirm, having been unable to tolerate the first.
Even if you are a normie and like them as is, there's basically a 100% chance you'll enjoy the audiobooks more.

All the old multi-part book series' in the EU did that and it worked pretty well with the exception of Karen Traviss almost completely derailing Legacy of the Force with totally unrelated Mando nonsense and Boba Fett's daddy issues grand daughter. No idea why they put an entire new trilogy on the shoulders of one completely untested author with a bad portfolio of Tumblr fanfics.
