Wow what a complete piece of shit. This whole movie is like a fantasy for middle-aged single mothers. I liked Pan's Labyrinth but this was extremely bad in every way. And the social commentary lays thick as Persian carpets. You can't at one moment forgive something for eating a cat because "it's just a beast" and at the other second proceed to fuck it. That's called beastiality. Fuck this movie. What a sleazy piece of shit.

OMG SO POWERFUL

>Mexican director
>film about an hispanic, a black woman, a gay man and a tree-hugger saving the figurative black man from the clutches of the white straight faithful man
>not winning best film
Del Toro is one cynical motherfucker

And the diner scenes. They don't even bother making it even fit the movie anymore. They just shove in that shit everywhere they can.

Del toro said it's an amphibian GOD, stop with your black cuck obsession and projection

del Toro stole the script anyways

Whatever he needs to have the white Christian man lose his faith by the end as he bleeds to death realizing his whole life was a lie.

BRAVO DEL TORO! BRAVO!

>see this movie at theater
>Bit weird, bit ayylmao quirky but amusing enough, don't regret watching it
>decent but don't think I'll ever have to see it again
>still notice obvious SJW shite but ignore
>few days later
>movie winning awards
>everyone jerking off to fishmen
Is this the end of the world as we know it?

So… this movie is shit, but not on a technical level, on which it actually has a lot of merit. No, it’s shit on a quasi-political level.

Let’s lists the main protagonists of the film:

1. Disabled, sexually repressed and highly empathetic mousy woman who never hesitates to do the right thing or stand up for herself, especially against WHITE (*wink*) authoritarian figures.
2. Sassy, salt-of-the-earth and pillar of her household best-friend of said mousy woman, who, although loves her husband, belittles him at every opportunity.
3. Gay neighbor who goes with the flow, whether that’s being understanding of her friend’s burgeoning sexual relationship with a literal sea-monster or said sea-monster eating his cat, but that’s totally OK because he actually has a ton of replacement cats.

Now let’s list the antagonists of the film:

1. Middle-class WHITE MALE (emphasis on white, if you couldn’t tell) with a nuclear-family who lives in the suburbs. Big into torture with the use of a phallic object for some reason, abuse of authority and talking-down to people of lesser social status, one of whom he sexually harasses (*wink wink*).
2. Owner of a café that pretends to be something he’s not, who isn’t just casually homophobic but also racist, all in the same scene!
3. Evil russians with bad accents meddling in american affairs??

It’s insulting how the movie goes out of its way lend some depth to the heroic protagonist characters, but fails to develop any of the villainous roles besides making them more evil for evil’s sake. (e.g. doubling down on the homophobe by also making him a racist). It’s almost amusing to think how 10 to 15 years ago this movie would’ve made an effort to give a fair treatment to the characterization of its characters, as opposed to the two-dimensional cutout treatment of today that happily tows the SJW doctrine. How can you say we as a society have progressed when this is the type of film that wins BP?

the movie is so shit it doesn't even deserve its own thread

>2. Owner of a café that pretends to be something he’s not, who isn’t just casually homophobic but also racist, all in the same scene!
I love how that scene goes instantly OMG LOOK A HOMOPHOBE. OH AND HE'S ALSO A FUCKING RACIST!

Del Toro must've felt like a real clever motherfucker writing that. He must've known that type of blunt unashamed writing would land him Academy Awards. It's exactly what they were looking for.

5/10 movie - technical stuff is spot on but rest stinks.

Fucking THIS. It was the clunkiest fucking writing in the world, laughably bad .

If this movie flopped and didn't win any awards Sup Forums would be all over it.

>The Shape of Water hasn’t yet inspired opportunistic political interpretations like the 2005 Star Wars: Revenge of the Siths. (“So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause” a silly aphorism that actually presaged the Obama era.) This film’s fish-and-female premise merely combines sexual masochism with political self-righteousness and cinematic cluelessness (Del Toro’s movie references include a dismal Astaire and Rogers musical homage). To think this movie is just fantasy is to drown in stupidity.
He always says what I think

The art direction is amazing. The Oscars should have: Best Picture: Lady Bird, Best Screenplay: Three Billboards and Best Director: Guillermo Del Toro

>Three Billboards and Best Director
>White Guilt: the Movie winning anything
nigga be tripping balls

Blade Runner should've won best film and Nolan should've gotten best director.

Fuck it. If you can pull off a 200m dollar movie and still give it artistic merit you deserve all the awards in the world. Not this Oscar bait shit.

we live in a timeline where Del Toro's erotic fanfic about a fish man having sex with a human woman won best picture

Nolan was robbed.
5 years ago he'd have swept the Best Director award all season and won the Oscar.

FFS look at how weak this year's category was. Del Taco's work wasn't anything spectacular (the production design team did 95% of the work), Gerwig was standard indie point-and-shoot filmmaking (strength is the screenplay), and Peele.... come on. "Get Out" shouldn't have been nominated for ANYTHING... let alone winning a screenplay Oscar.

I haven't seen "Phantom Thread" i'm sure PTA rocked it... but come on. Is there any doubt had this ceremony happened a few years back and/or the political bullshit wasn't as paramount in the hivemind of Hollywood, that Dunkirk wouldn't have won Best Director and maybe Best Picture?

Nolan was robbed.

so you liked it?

Everyone knew Nolan would never win since he was a white man. On top of that was a film that celebrated the courage of ordinary white men. It was never going to win.

True.
also I think if it wasn't Del Taco, Best Director would've gone to Peele.... and if not him Gerwig.... because diversity.

In other words two of the most revered directors of their generation (Nolan and PTA) would've lost the Oscar no matter what to lesser efforts because of diversity for diversity sake.

And the fact that Denis Villeneuve was robbed in favor of affirmative action. Blade Runner 2048 was one of the highest rated films of the year. Yet the Academy chose to completely shun the film from the awards it deserved, not even nominating it for best film or best director. Shape of Water holds a fraction of Villeneuve's directorial talent.

agree 100%

Which was itself stolen from a comic by Alan Moore which in turn was inspired by Abe Sapien in Hellboy.

FULL CIRCLE.

Bullshit. I'm a big fan of Pan's Labyrinth and there is absolutely nothing redeemable about this except Shannon's performance and the visuals. Del Toro used to be a storyteller, now he's simply an opinionteller.

Who cares about oscars? Many great directors dont have oscar. Actually being without oscar makes you more respectable imho.

Hitchock, Kubrick, Lynch, Leone, Welles etc etc etc and many more dont have oscar. Who cares.

That is one scene that is just bad in a funny way. You know well enough the the audience wouldn’t sympathize well with the gay artist character because he just made unwarranted advance on much younger guy way out of his league. People would sympathize with the pie shop owner. That moment also can be interpreted as creepy and push the scenario a bit close to the kevin spacey case. However, del toro doesn’t want the character who is supposed to represent the lgbt community to look bad, so he make the the pie shop owner homophobic AND racist to the convenien group of black customer who walk in at that right time. The “this is a family restaurant” is also a jab at certain recent controversal family restaurant that refused service to gay people

And it's also very convenient for Del Toro that his gay characters are completely free of racial bias fitting of that time era. A very neat us vs them story. The opressed vs the opressor. No nuance. No ambiguity. Del Toro is a dull blade.

Meh, it's okay. Starts off well, but gets less and less interesting as it goes on.

>weird fishman gets laid
>i can't get laid
can anyone explain this math to me?

Middle aged single women are desperate as fuck. This whole movie is for them.

You have to get good at eating pussy to get laid. Just follow Fishmans example

eating eggs you mean?

Why is the woman all fucked up looking? Do we have to pay good money to be a part of the white guilt / SJW movement? And why is Francis McDermont cast in anything anyway? Not an attractive woman....is it because she married one of the Cohen Bros? I really miss the 80's & 90's when bullshit movies were made for just the sake of enjoyment......
